I usually try to step climb a bit. Gain 500ish meters and then level off to gain a bit of speed repeat. Also Jay's suggestion of a shuttle climb (gain a bit of altitude doing circuits over the aerodrome before going enroute).

Do people really get upset about this? I've never done it as I don't see the point once the enemy has 'hit the silk' but I can't say I'd be overly upset if it happened to me. Why is this upsetting?
