I looked this up and his actually happened!!

Lego made a limited set of 7 Auschwitz sets in 1996, and is the biggest scandal in Lego's history!

A very cursory Google search suggests that is not quite the truth. Lego were asked to donate bricks to a polish artist for an undisclosed project (which they did) - and that project turned out to be "Lego Auschwitz". What could Lego do? Fight it. And I quote:
LEGO initially asked Libera not to show the artwork publicly, yet after a period of time, they dropped the matter altogether.
However they were kind of in a difficult situation. On the one hand if they kept pursuing Zbigniew Libera they could rightfully be accused of attempted censorship of art, and if they didn't then they could be accused of being complicit. As it is, there is a quote from Libera in the LA Times which kind of sums it up:
"I understand that Lego must defend its good name, but this is not a product being offered in a store,"
So I guess they decided to back down and let the story die.

This is not quite the same as them actively doing a production run of 7 sets.

You need the whole story - else this is how hysteria begins.

It was a work by Zbigniew Liberia, a Polish artist:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zbigniew_Libera

He used bricks donated by the Polish branch of Lego, they had no idea of his intentions. He built the Lego sets and boxes, the roofs are merely cardboard with Lego bits added - it's not an official set and was never meant to be. When Lego HQ found out about it they began legal proceedings, but later dropped them.

As a piece of art it's fascinating - seemingly trivialising something as heinous as the concentration camp and eliciting responses that are more in line with what you would expect.

Yes, I didn't discover the rest of the story until this morning. My apologies. Still, fascinating that this actually happened ...
