I fly because I played IL 2 Sturmovik Birds of Prey and if I can learn how to fly Cliffs of Dover it looks like it will be fun. I have a controller that I can use on pc if it is needed.

I don't know if controller is gonna cut it.
Unlike Birds of Prey, Cliffs only supports cockpit views and somewhat realistic controls, which means that a joystick is a must. You can get a good entry stick for about 30$ or much, much more if you're feeling fancy. Some sort of head-tracking is also a very nice addition as situational awareness is what makes pilot an ace.

I'm sure some tech gurus will arive shortly and sort you out with that, but I suggest checking out some tutorial videos on our flight school page ( http://www.aircombatgroup.co.uk/flight_ ... school.php ) to familiarize yourself with controls and how it generally looks like.

It most definitely can, I have been doing so for the last 2-3 years and not had a problem.

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro is a good entry stick, as is the T.16000.

What about all the little buttons in the cockpit? ( I messed with Cliffs of Dover for about half an hour)

You click the buttons with your mouse.

If you want more immediate answers, go on Teamspeak and ask around. We're a helpful bunch, you'll definitely find someone who can help you get set up.

It is easier to bind cockpit switches to keyboard buttons. Most have defaults already, but get online for some tuition because most bindings you don't actually need.
