Like the Hurricane, let it sputter away for a minute or so then just firewall the throttle with vigour and itll power up a charm.Broadsword wrote:Weirdly I have no problem starting the engine, but it then refuses to run up - it just sits there sputtering quietly away to itself with no rise in oil pressure and no indication that it's going to settle down as it warms (I've let it sputter for 10 mins just to see ). So what's the trick once it's turning over? I've tried more throttle, less throttle, reducing the mixture, firing the guns, alternating my magnetos, extending my slats. I don't think it has any other controls, so what am I missing?Nails wrote:A reminder - If you are all flying Tiger Moths.
They are a twat to start.
1. Lean out to flick your Magnetos On (they are forward of your cockpit glass on the left hand side of the fuselage).
2. Fuel Cock Lever - By your left shin - Forward (On)
3. Mixture - Fully Forward
4. That throttle has to be EXACTLY 9 - 10% (or no engine start).
5. Use your ears to judge whether all is running well.

Nope, it cuts out if I put the throttle over about 20%, even after 10 minutes of sputtering. And when I say sputtering, I don't mean the kind of 'give me a minute' noises the Hurricane makes, I mean a sort of 'this death rattle's going on for quite a while isn't it' sound, accompanied by a total lack of response from my oil pressure.
I must go up to the skies again, to the peace of silent flight, To the gull’s way, and the hawk’s way, and the free wings’ delight;
And all I ask is a friendly joke with a laughing fellow rover, And a large beer, and a deep sleep, when the long flight’s over.

I've found I nudge the throttle until it sputters for a moment and then pull the throttle back a touch. Leave it a little longer and then try again, eventually it'll just purr away and you're off.

This whole oil temp thing will play havoc with our scramble times and server numbers.
Takes about 1 minute per degree C, that can't be right.....

Able to be ready in less than the minute.
See Bunny's video, nicely done.

From start up to roll can still be achieved in about 30-45 seconds. After start, chocks in, throttle to 25% (just on the verge of flooding), wait for 30 seconds, BCO on, full throttle and away.

i flew the tiger for the past 2 days. it is easiest if you map a key/keys for 10% throttle, otherwise very hard to determine proper setting. you must let it idle for a minute or so, then full throttle....it'll sound like it is dying, but it will kick in and go.....

Is this historical? I think I'm going to ask our friends at 501Hurricane.co.ukWoop wrote:From start up to roll can still be achieved in about 30-45 seconds. After start, chocks in, throttle to 25% (just on the verge of flooding), wait for 30 seconds, BCO on, full throttle and away.

So, in the aftermath of yesterdays event:
I had a lot of fun with it just flying through these furballs of planes and tracers with everyone shooting each other.
Can we make this a more regular event? Maybe one of the two weeks when we're on campaign break?
