bomber gunners too good? not sure about that.....

Post by Zyk » Sun Dec 31, 2017 6:45 pm

i have been reading alot about bomber gunners being 'too good'. i am not sure that is true. i was flying with a new guy, 'schleprock', and a young guy named 'rmiles', on saturday, 12/30/17. schlep had never been a gunner before, he was gunner in a ju88, i was escort in a 109. nobody else on server, i told him to take a practice shot at me. i was on his high 5 o'clock, maybe 200 yards. he did a very short half second burst (first shot ever in gunner position), and i saw tracers just miss my cockpit, heard no hits. 30 seconds later, my engine was sputtering, and oiled my windscreen! he got my engine his first shot! then, later i was piloting a stuka, and miles was my gunner, we got attacked by a spitfire on our 6. i kept a fairly straight course, just jinking slightly up and down so the spit would miss, and so miles could shoot. after a couple bursts from miles the spit gave up, then went into the drink! miles only had minimal time as a gunner before. so if these guys could nail planes with little or no previous experience, at a good distance, it isn't beyond belief that ai gunners (who in real life would have had training and practice) can hit planes fairly consistently. a second mission in stukas, i was piloting and miles was my gunner, and schlep was in another stuka. i looked back and saw he was being sixed by a spit, and warned him to dive, just in time. the spit eventually got him, he bailed, and was saved by asr, then the spit came after me. again, i stayed my course, just jinking a tiny bit, making the spit miss, and miles was shooting him, and the spit finally turned away. then another mission in stuka to bomb ships in folkstone harbor, we got attacked by a spit just as i was over target, turning on my air brakes to roll over. the spit could only watch as i dove and nailed the freighter, then got away at low level....we survived 3 attacks by spits and made it home in one day, it felt real good....lol....

I think that gunnery is a lot more difficult in real life, where as here all we have to do is point and shoot. I don't mind the odd crack shot gunner but when literally every single gunner in a formation can hit a fly, it makes it almost impossible to attack. I wouldn't mind some sort of suppression effect on gunners if our bullets are landing near them.

Yes in real life you would be getting thrown around, and g forces would have an effect on your aim, but they weren't just cooks taking a joyride in the gunners seat, they were trained for the job.

It's all well and good making this thread saying that gunners are fine and so on, but have you been on the receiving end? Yes this new guy peppered your engine with his first burst but you were a sitting duck (Quote: i was on his high 5 o'clock, maybe 200 yards). If this guy had been playing the game for any longer than a week then he'd know the ballistics fairly well - and being put in a stable gun platform and shooting at a non manoeuvering target 200yds away is piss easy, especially when the target is plane sized. (wouldn't even need to take account of deflection as you'd be pretty much the same speed)

Back to the bit about being on the receiving end. I've made several attacks on Bombers in 4.5 and the default gunner level (whatever that may be) is able to hit an aircraft pulling an increasingly tighter turn, changing speed, changing altitude, and slipping for good measure, outside the range I'd even dream of opening fire at a stationary bomber from my plane at his dead six. Not just hitting the plane but cementing whole bursts into the rads, engine, or pilot.

Yes us RAF pilots have had it easy with regard to the AI gunners shooting the fairies while we sit on their arse and blow them to kingdom come - but when they repeatedly make stupidly implausible shots as easily as they would lift the Steins to their mouths it is a bit ridiculous.
Fight on and fly on to the last drop of blood and the last drop of fuel - to the last beat of the heart.

Gunners in Blennies are sniper too now. I don't believe this is a matter of sides. Default AI setting of player controlled aircraft gunners are really unreal.

I flew for 30 minutes tonight looking for trade in the public server. Didn't find a thing. I eventually came across a German seaplane. Usually i don't bother with them but i was that bored i decided to attack it. I dove out of range and came up from below it almost vertically. Fired and rolled away. It's gunner fired 1 burst at me, blew my oil and downed me! :suicide:
