Took off with Mason, Casca, and Aurora as Schwarm 1. Takeoff went well. Picked up bombers and escorted into channel. Tried to get near the bombers and Aurora and I separated from Mason and Casca chasing a Spitfire… got a few hits and climbing right turn back toward the bombers…made a pass through the furball and came out the other end in a climbing left hand turn . Lost Aurora and was looking for a contact when pilot wound and engine on fire….no way I was going to make it home so hit the silk. Of course, my chute did not open …again.

I was placed in charge of 3rd schwarme today, which was comprised of me, Krass, and Lee. We got off in good order, headed towards the rendezvous at French point, then turned towards Calais to join up with the bomber stream, climbing to 4k(+). I used the younger eyes of both Krass and Lee to guide us to our required position as we headed out towards Dover harbor. The fight started early and I was quickly separated. 3rd schwarme tried to rejoin, but I became involved in a fight with a couple of Spitfires that prevented me from linking up. Subsequently my plane took hits in the radiators, and I was soon venting. Being alone I reported to Lee and Krass that I was leaving the combat area with a wounded bird. I would try to make it back to base. Soon my wind screen was covered with oil, and a few moments later I shut the engine down which forced me to trade altitude for speed. I cleared the French coast at French Point, and felt I could make it back to home base since I had it in sight. But Emil is not a very good glider, and soon I was looking for a suitable site to set my Black-8 down. The lower the plane sank, the more restricted my options became, and I was forced to accept a wheels-up outcome. I selected a grassy field to set down, but I could not lower my sink rate adequately enough. Next thing I knew I was riding on the back of a nice plump Valkyrie, and admiring the funeral pyre left by the smoking hole of my Black 8.

I liked Atreides' thinking with regard to more-easily controlled smaller fighting units, and wish to see this continue as a trend for future operations. It has the potential of greater force -flexibility. To Lee and Krass, I think we will be just fine as a fighting unit, and that we should embrace passing unit control among us. You guys ROCK!!

I was starting with Maalek as Rottenführer. Short before English coast at about 5000 m I was bounced by a Spitfire while trying to keep up with the Schwarm on a upper left turn and got hurt (red screen). Maalek was attacked too shortly after that and his engine was hit. I turned left tw. France and dived to deck to escape and see, if my injury would be serious. Luckily they were not so I rose up to 5000 meter again above the bombers nr. Dover. Pitti gave the order to protect the bombers so I returned home when I suddenly saw a Spit chasing a Me109 going from west to east. The Me109 dived away unharmed and the Spit flew alone. I dived on her and fired twice, but cant confirm a hit. The Spit escaped to deck and I followed the bombers to france.
Finally landed on Marquise East wounded. The nurse that treated my wounds was... well my Maschinenwart Lothar who was smelling like a tiger mixed with garlic and cold tobacco.

Shortly after we saw the enemy above us, and turned into him I was rammed by an E/A which severed my tail, so I had to bail out over the channel. Thank God I was picked up by one of our He 115s. It was a very short sortie for me, this time.

All week we have been listening to the sound of hammering and grunting, as the French peasant workers finish construction on new buildings around our airfield. Personally supervised by our very own Gruppenkommandeur with Helga in charge of the 'motivational team'. Our home at Marquise East now looks fit and ready for the mighty staffeln of JG26.
Our latest training has involved operations in smaller shwarms.Today, I am assigned to No3 Schwarm led by veteran pilot Unteroffizier Flyby. On my wing will be Obergefreiter Lee, one of 5 Staffels most dedicated pilots. There is an air of confidence spreading through our Jagedgeshwader, the new pilots have fitted in well and are showing great character and promise. If this war is prolonged much further, they are going to need all of that and more..

The beautiful, deafening roar of the DB601 fills the summer air. Another escort mission for us, this time we will escort our glorious bombers to wreck havoc on the port town of Dover. As we leave the airfield behind, all minds are set on our goal. Orders are received, and we position our Schwarm on the right of the bomber formation. An impressive sight indeed, but not for the waiting Tommy's..

'Contacts. 12 o'clock high!'

Our radios burst into life, and I already have an enemy plane in sight. The sky is alive with activity as the RAF try to attack our brave bombers. Our 109's are ready and already on them, I follow a Hurricane down through a long sweeping dive trying a few deflection shots, but am careful not to fall into an energy trap and extend and climb. Our Schwarmfuhrer is in trouble, but in the chaos of battle I have lost him. Soon he reports a damaged plane and has to RTB. I try now to rejoin with Lee, who is in touch with the bomber formation. Within minutes, I find myself inland from Dover and follow another 109 who is gaining on the six of an unsuspecting Hurricane. The Tommy is lining himself up for an easy shot at one of our bombers. We both fire almost immediately at the enemys tail and wings, as he breaks and dives to my right. I follow him down to the deck, where he pulls a gravity defying turn. I extend away using my speed to fly low over what remains of Dover port. Smoke and flames are everywhere, as I fly through the dense blanket and gain height.

As I reach 3.5k, I find a stray single bomber on his way back. We receive orders to RTB and I am now near Obergefreiter Lee as we approach the French coast. Judging by the comms, this has been a very successful mission for JG26 and our bombers. The welcome sight of our airfield soon beckons, and there seems to be a lot of us returning home today, a great achievement from our Staffeln. Well done kameraden!

I confirm one victory of Major Pitti over a Hurricane some 15 km northwest of Dover at ca. 1335. I went in for the first attack on it but only did light damage. Major Pitti downed her in the next pass.
