This was the second time after my promotion to Leutnant and Staffelkapitän, that I lead the 6. Staffel into combat. We took off as first element of the II.Gruppe and set course for Boulogne. We had orders to climb over Boulogne and group with the Bomber formation coming in from the south. When the Bombers arrived they split up into two groups to bomb two airfields. 6.Staffel was ordered between the two groups. So I manouvered my Schwarm into the ordered position and scanned the sky for enemies. The were called out over the left Bomber formation. I could see two groups of enemy fighters. The first were clearly Hurricanes, they started to dive on the Bombers. Instinctly, I wanted to dive after them to get them with their panties down, while they were concentated on the Bombers. But I was worried about the enemy second group. If we would have dived, we would have been in a bad position right in front of them. But then I saw, that this group of fighters was engaged by our comrades from the 5.Staffel. So, down it goes! Hurricane chase! I ordered the 6. to dive and pick targets, clearly marked by the Bombers defensive fire. Soon, my Pilots started to call out hits on the enemies.

I confirm that Leutnant Rook downed a Hurricane over Lympe at ca. 5000m. The time was 17.55 when he scored effective hits on the enemy aircraft, damaging the oil and air radiators. Shortly after that, I passed the enemy aircraft which was on its way to the ground with a dead engine and trailing oil and water vapor.

As more and more radio calls came in, that Pilots were engaged with Spitfires, I called out to RTB.

I also confirm a kill of Unteroffizier Huff Duff over a Spitfire close to French point. This Spit was chasing me at high altitudes to french point. I evade in a steep dive which the Brit didn't follow. He choosed to chase Unteroffizier Huff Duff. With the energy from my dive, I clsed the distance and opened fire on the Spit. Hauptmann Trautloff also joined the fight and the three of us performed an energy fight from the books with this poor guy. The only thing he could do was turning hard with his lower wingtip in the water. It was Unteroffizier Huff Duff who scored the main hits, causing the Spit's radiator to explode. Shortly after that, the Spit went into the water, around 500m away from french point. It's markings were SH - U. This is Luftwaffe territory, old chap! :!:

Mission Date: 12th August 1940

Name: Javelina
Rank: Hauptgefreiter
Unit: 4./JG26
Aircraft: Bf 109 E-4
Markings: White 13
Aerodrome: Marquise East
Pilot Status: OK - great spirits!
Aircraft Status: Peachy keen - no dents, nicks or marks. Ready for the next mission! My landing was smooth as butter! :D

We had the high honor of having our Gruppenkommandeur fly with our Staffel for this mission. All boots, bunks, and crates were in top order for the pre mission inspection. Every inspection item passed with flying colors! Danke Gruppenkommandeur. Our Staffel was in high spirits, and wanting to demonstrate our fighting capabilities while the high command was in attendance!

The 4th was the final Staffel to T/O from Marquise. I was in the 1st Schwarm, and yet again, the honor of being the wingman for our Gruppenkommandeur (clicking my heel's). Martinjas and Scannon completed our other Rotte.

Our Staffel T/O was in good order, managed to dodge some of the FOD on the air strip. :-) (We'll have to speak with the ground crew to better manage the field, and remove that spare DB601). :-)

We managed to link up with bombers as they were making their runs into the Tommie airstrips. Pitti called out that he'd spotted the Red B@st@rd's lining up on the bombers. Following his command, we set up for some attack runs on those Tommies.

Let me just say, this is the 2nd time I've flown as Pitti's wingman. When you're with him, you're going to get into the sh*t fast! And sure as sh*t, we did! Pitti called out the Red's were attacking the bombers, "let's get them fast!!!" I swung to his six and followed him through his first gun pass. He shot at a Hurri and I saw some rounds go into it but didn't look like a kill. We made a left climb looking for more Tommie's. Within short order, Pitti called out some more of those Tommie's lining up on the bombers. With this second gun run, I was hanging on his 4 O'clock. We saw (2) Hurri's flying level and just behind the bombers. Pitti managed to put some wicked hits on the left most Hurri, (he really f*ked it up), and as he buzzed through I opened up on the Tommie's right hand girlfriend. Manage to get a hit, but it was not lethal by any means.

We buzzed through the bomber formation, and after which I lost eyes on Pitti. Nonetheless, the Red Hurri's were everywhere. Shortly after, with a few radio calls, I saw Pitti attacking yet another Red, and he was really laying down the lead. But, he had another Hurri on his six who opened up on him. I called out that I saw the Hurri, and was climbing up into him. Just as Pitti broke away I gave the Red a bit of the cannon's. Don't think I got a hit, but I'm sure he's changing his underwear once he touched down.

Shortly after, we were given the command by our Gruppenkommandeur to RTB. I was able to bring my crate home, intact, and in good order! Was pretty cool to watch the air show with all of our Luftwaffe Kameraden returning home! Lots of Gruppe team members made it back.

Great show, and a great way to finish.

I was flying as Katschmarek to Lt. Rook this time. We made contact with the enemy at 17:45 hours. Shortly afterwards, Lt. Rook shot down a Hurricane and then we circled the bombers until we engaged another Hurricane. We chased the E/A and landed some hits on it, but then lost sight of it and of each other. The Gruppenkommandeur had meanwhile ordered us to RTB, so I turned for home in a slight descent, as I spotted a gaggle of spitfires above my head. In mid-channel I saw tracers flying by, so I took evasive action, but was hit and got a small leak in the radiator. Thankfully the guy had opened fire way too soon, so I was able to react.

The Spit turned away and I was able to crash-land on Marquise West.

Rank: N/A
Unit: 5./JG26 Schwarm 1
Aircraft: Bf 109 E-4
Markings: black 9
Aerodrome: Marquise East
Pilot Status: OK
Aircraft Status: Landed, Fuel leak / light body damage.

Victory Claims: Some hits on a spitfire. Didn't see it go down.

Took off from Marquise wingman to Atreides with Boyezee and Esri (who had a little bump on take-off before rejoining with us at around 4-5k over French point). We circled the general area forming with 6./JG26 and moving out to escort bomber formations heading to Dungeoness. It wasn't long before we were engaged with spitfires on the edge of contrail height. I lost Atreides in the confusion but soon rejoined with him and the rest of Schwarm 1 when, as planned, we regrouped over Dungeoness. I bounced a Spitfire (SH-A) as it tried to draw a bead on one 109, getting a cannon hit between the fuselage and port side wing. Making a nice big hole. Nothing too damaging though. I climbed out looking for another target to dive on but soon found a spitfire on my six. Inverting and diving away again to Dungeoness the spitfire broke and stayed high. The spitfire got some hits on me before I dove, a tiny fuel leak and some hits on my wing but nothing too serious. Then a call from Group Leader to RTB which saw Schwarm 1 head back to Marquise for a formation landing and a great flyby from I think 6. Staffel!

Schwarm 1 lined up / engines off after landing.

Had fun flying with you guys ;), glad I could be part of a successful sortie!

It was a beautiful day in the channel , There was a slight mishap with aircraft selection , as we were informed in the last minute that we are to fly the E4 .
This made forming up just a tad more chaotic , but nothing we could not handle .
Image
As you can see , the mission was well prepared with headings and return headings pre prepared .
As we took off we followed Schwarms 1+2 to Boulogne to wait for the bombers .
We were assigned their right wing and needed to maneuver to keep above and behind .
Just before Dungeness the bomber formation split to 2 formations one was heading for Lymne , and ours for Hawkinge .
Suddenly we spotted a massive formation attacking the bombers co-alt .
I have given the order to engage in Rotters and me and Krauss headed for the first bandit .
I chased it down , lower and lower , making sure that Krauss has my back .
I've got some good hits in him , but no kill .
As I extended away , I saw that Krauss is not there , and I soon found out that he has broken off to chaise an indianer of his own.
I later found out from Her Staffelkapitän , that the indianer I was chasing finally went down , I am sorry to say , I cannot confirm this kill , as he was still flying when I extended away .
We have set Cap Gris Nez as our Rendezvous point , and headed back home .
After we made some low level formation flybys , we made our final .
After a less the perfect landing (to say the least ) we counted all Schwarm members returned to base unharmed .
For me , this is mission accomplished , I cannot ask for more .
We have then learned from Her Staffelkapitän that the entire Staffle made it home alive after successful engagements .
Horrido !

Arrived late but managed to take off in time to follow the 4th as a one-man 3rd schwarm. Danced with some spits and hurris but never fired my guns and wasn't hit either. RTB'd when the order came and landed safely.

Hey Jav - why is your unit listed as Stab. 4./JG26? If I'm not mistaken and I may very well be, there could be a Stab./JG26 and a 4./JG26 but not a Stab 4./JG26. As I said, I may be wrong, however.

Today an escort mission. I flew in the 3rd schwarm, second Rotte, wingman slot (to Bubi). Fairly routine, and pretty quiet. We formed up, flew to rendezvous with the bombers, our charges for the day. 5./took up it's position on the right wing of the bombers. We did gentle S-weaves, over-flying the bomber stream while maintaining speed, and relative position. Bubi called out several bogies. We turned to face several bogeys that wandered our way. Several times the time the bogeys turned out to be 109s. "Hurricanes!" From Bubi. Lee and Krass began prosecuting bandits that we clear and present dangers. Bubi and I climbed, and turned to exploit the attackers from a favorable perch. Of benefit from the added height was the apparent threat we may have been perceived to be. "Beware the Hun in the Sun" I'd like to think our presence was a threat. I never even fired a shot. Bubi was a challenge to keep position on as we maneuvered through space. It was exhilarating trying to keep eyes on him during those moments, while also trying to steal a look around for attacks on him (and on me). I felt good enough at only keeping eyes on him. No way i could hold position. Always good to be flexible about those things. It was good enough to communicate my relative position as needed. Very fluid flying. Quite enjoyable. Before I knew it the command to RTB came. We all exited the area. 5./JG26/3rd schwarm came through with no losses. We celebrated this lucky turn by doing a low pass in tight formation over Hydroquent before entering the pattern to land. I was pretty tired from my katchmerek duties. But it was a good day, and a good tired. I let my engine run on to cool it down a bit prior to shutdown. I took the time to enjoy the "quiet".

AAR: ESCORT THE BOMBERS TO THE CLIFFS AND BACK

3rd Schwarm taxiing for takeoff, looking over my shoulder to see FLYBY (tail end Charlie today) in position and LEE/KRASS ahead in lead slots.
Image

LEE leads the 5./JG26 3rd Schwarm up to operational altitude and out over the Channel behind the other staffels and scharms
Image

Our charges, the bombers are escorted to England
Image

England coast in sight as the 5th escorts the right side bomber formations
Image

Soon the fur flies as the 5th encounters the 64th and some Hurries as well. The first rotte (Lee/Krass) went down in the furball and hit two Indians. Second rotte (Bubi/Flyby) stayed over the bombers in high cover and pushed the attackers off our bombers without a shot. They exited the formation as we prepared to BnZ, which gave the bombers time to do their thing and turn back for home.
Image

After some engagements and fients, the old man calls to knock it off and RTB. After the 3rd Schwarm rejoins we choose to buzz the airfield a couple of times as we await our turn to land. Our schwarm turns in towards home base...
Image

Low level formation buzzage going on...
Image

We land and find out that of the entire JG26, only 1 loss and none for our schwarm which did get two kills.
Image

I fraps the whole engagement, and downloaded Movie Maker for Win7, but I haven't used it enough to produce anything yet.

Was a fun mission, and I really liked being not short leashed to the bombers. Was able to stay above them and the enemy which was what the 109 is best at. Thinking maybe the other Staffels should take turns roving high cover and spread the fun and learning around. Flying at 3-4k with slow bombers is no way to be successful.
