General Situation

The Soviet force attacking towards Vjazma from the North remains cut off. However, in the centre the Soviets are still making gains but their progress from Mozhaisk has been slowed by tenacious defence. In the south the Soviets have continued their exploitation of the breakthrough between Vyazma and Yuhnov (2711) and supported their forward troops with airborne operations and further drops of paratroopers are expected. The situation here is confused, and the front line positions are not clear, with units reporting scattered paratrooper and partisan activity throughout the area. Temkino (2309) continues to hold although the enemy are flanking it to the E and NE. Mjatlevo has fallen and the troops who escaped are bolstering the defences around Yuhnov. 4th SS-Panzergrenadier-Regiment "Der Führer" has been encircled at Sheloki (2610) while performing a fighting retreat. Aircraft availability continues to improve through implementation of various measures to allow air operations in the continued severe weather.
9th Korps of 3rd Pz Army are falling back from Mozhaisk to establish new defensive positions. The front line on west and northern edges of the Soviet breakthrough area north of Yuhnov has broken down and the situation is somewhat fluid. Temkino is being held but under increasing threat. 13th Korps of 4th Army have fallen back towards Yuhnov, held by 43rd Korps. Preparations continue to fortify the Konigsberg Line in order to stop the Soviet westward advance but the recent breakthrough has already passed this line in the south.

Intentions

The intention is to take back the initiative with increased emphasis on gaining local air superiority. This will allow ground attack missions to operate more securely and disrupt the enemy air force’s continued harassment of our ground units. Specialist ground attack units are to continue to strike nominated targets but fighter employment should be maximised to establish local air superiority in the key central and southern sectors of the front. Within these sectors, control of the air above the Soviet breakthrough and in particular our stranded unit IVO Sheloki have priority but Soviet air attacks have been widespread and can be expected anywhere along the front line.

Meteorology Section

- Winds picking up, heavier cloud forming and light snow expected
- Cloud 8/8 overcast at 2800m.
- Winds from NE, 10-15 kph. Temperature -20C.
- Precipitation: Light snow
- Persistent contrails at higher altitudes. Icing risk low. Lightning risk low. Sunset at 1800 (L).
- Outlook: Skies likely to clear again overnight, heavy frost expected.

Fremde Heere Ost Report

Soviet small arms / HMG flak is reported as heavy over their forward units in the breakthrough area. Some larger calibre flak has been encountered in Koshnyaki (2512.6), Ugryumovo (2410.6), Slobodka (2609.4) and Fedotkovo (2408.2) but is otherwise mostly concentrated around strategic points / cities and airfields. Heavy flak is reported at Mozhaysk and most major towns in the central sector.
The Soviets have recently overrun Znamenka and Mjatlevo and these are already in operation. Taking advantage of attack / strafing opportunities on any forward airfields could disrupt VVS operations.
4th SS-Panzergrenadier-Regiment "Der Führer" has been encircled IVO Sheloki. Friendly forces are also struggling to keep open the supply line to Yuhnov from the west. Both areas require support from strike units.

Scenario Rules

All airfields are considered vulnerable to enemy air attacks with the exception of Dugino and Dvoevka. Be aware that the VVS are increasingly conducting offensive operations against our airbases so plan accordingly.
Replacement aircraft are not widely available - damaged aircraft can only be replaced if landing at their original MOB. Due to logistic and transport difficulties, aircraft landing or coming down away from an active MOB/FOB will have to be abandoned and considered lost.
The standard ‘one life per mission’ still applies – being killed or wounded terminates the individual pilot’s participation for the evening.
