Tamiya 1/48 P-47D-25

Thunderbolt! Unlike the earlier Razorbacks, the Bubbletops known for their shiny bare metal finish and touches of flashy paint. I ended up selecting the 35th Fighter Group in the Pacific to base mine on since they had a very swanky look going on. Unfortunately I couldn't find very good sources on specific aircraft, so what I ended up doing is a bit of a hodgepodge of a few versions I've seen of their basic scheme. That does mean the serial and tail numbers are fictional, apart from the former falling in the correct production block.

As for loadout, I represented it in the long range ground attack role, with a 200gal drop tank, 6 M8 rockets, and a couple of 500lb bombs. I really like the escort 47s, but I figure at some point I'll get a Razorback and do it up late 43 style for that.

The tail, especially the white, was a bit of a nightmare to apply and the masking had a tendency to peel off paint. In the end that area came out a bit meh. I'll also admit the red cowling curves are slightly wonky. The other issue I had was for some reason, the dried silver paint ended up being slightly soluble in the varnish. I'd not had this issue before with the same paint and varnish, but it might just be due to the silver being the last bit of paint in the tin. Messed up the finish a little, but I was able to work around it for the most part.

All that said, on to the photos

Had a little fun doing the engine, the cowling can be taken off to see but it's not really detailed enough to have displayed like this, without significant modifications anyway.

Moulding and instrument panel decals were very nice in the cockpit, though I'll admit the seatbelt isn't so convincing!

Overall, a really nice kit from Tamiya!

Great stuff - looks like she's seen some action :D

I must go up to the skies again, to the peace of silent flight, To the gull’s way, and the hawk’s way, and the free wings’ delight;
And all I ask is a friendly joke with a laughing fellow rover, And a large beer, and a deep sleep, when the long flight’s over.

Very Nice Work. I personally fear the silver schemes for all that can go wrong with the paint. You did a great job.
