Tamiya 1/48 P51B Mustang 357th FG 362nd FS markings

Post by ArcEye » Sun Jul 23, 2023 10:09 am

Painted in the markings of 2Lt Rodney Starkey who joined the 362nd fighter Squdron on the 6th of March 1944 he scored one victory.
I was originally planning to paint this in the "Old Crow" Markings but decied to do this more obscure scheme instead.

Noseart, National markings, Serial number and Group chequers are all sprayed on using Montex masks. D Day/Invasion stripes I measured out and painted using plenty of masking and a lot of patience and for my first attempt at them i'm very pleased with them.

The olive Drab, Grey and Aluminium are Ak real colours, D day markings are done with Tamiya acrylics, National insignia and yellows are Vallejo model air, Red and Zinc chromate are Mr color Aqueous range and the interior is done in Ammo by Mig Usaaf interior green.

Oils are just my cheap set from the works thinned with Ak Odourless thinner.

Did you paint the checkerboard around the nose? The markings look great.

Yes I did Tex the montex mask kit had some squares in it so sprayed the yellow then alternated the squares and painted the red.

I masked the D-day stuff by hand but the nose art, checkerboard, serial number, tactical codes and markings where all from the Montex mask kit.

Only used Decals for stencils. It was a time consuming paint scheme but well happy with the result.

Impressive work on the masks. I really enjoy painting markings on now. Somehow more satisfying when it works than just putting on decals. I'd imagine that masking the nose checkerboard was a bit of work though.
