Re: WIP Spitfire IX 1/72
A lot of pictures today I had time to work on the model last weekend.
First masking with blue tack worms (french "Patafix")
Then masking tape... it's a long and borring work.
When masking's done, preshading again
Then it's time for paint. First the colour a little bit lightened by white or sand, and after, randomly some patches of the colour (here green) with more light tones added
After that, another time, some random patches of the original colour without any other mix
Finally the original colour, verry diluted, is lightly sprayed to tone down the contrast.
Sorry I didn't take picture of that stage
And...
Tà làààà...!!
After that it will be, gloss varnish, decals, gloss varnish again, weathering, matt varnish and more weathering...
To be continued

Re: WIP Spitfire IX 1/72
Lovely stuff - this kind of thing is so far outside my skillset, but it's endlessly fascinating to see how it's done
I must go up to the skies again, to the peace of silent flight, To the gull’s way, and the hawk’s way, and the free wings’ delight;
And all I ask is a friendly joke with a laughing fellow rover, And a large beer, and a deep sleep, when the long flight’s over.
Re: WIP Spitfire IX 1/72
You make it look so simple!!
"I stuck some wibbly wobbly stuff on the model, then sprayed it a bit, and now it's gorgeous."

All that and it's 1/72. The boys got skill out of the wazoo.
Re: WIP Spitfire IX 1/72
Time to give you news about the Spitfire. Weather is rainy in France so it's dificult to have good indoor pictures. What's are the evolutions since my last message ?
The aircraft was varnished gloss and the decals fitted with Superscale decal setting solution to avoid micro air bubbles which cause silvering effect.
After that, another coat of gloss varnish was applied to protect the decals.
There is a law you have to follow for varnish and weathering :
Acrylic varnish for oil paint weathering
Enamel varnish for acrylic weathering
Then the weathering began, first the chipping with silverish acrylic colour applied with sponge and after all the dirty effects.
For me, I mainly do dirty with artist oil paint, with experience you can do lots of very cool things.
Then some little streaking, all of these have to be very light but visible, it's really a matter of experience to find your own balance.
The pictures :
Now I will let it dry for a week (oil paints are longer to dry) and after I'll start the airbrush work for exhaust pipe's smoke, more visible leaks with acrylic inks etc.
