Mission Date: 08-11-16
Time: 12:30

A patrol mission from our new airbase at Le Hameau. We took off with the major but were quickly lost in cloud. I made it across to no mans land just east of Arras but had lost sight of the squadron. Secu sent up a red flare south of Arras as he was bounced the Hun's dastardly new machine. The Albatros D.II. Bully, Jammy and I raced to his rescue and quickly got stuck in. We found out soon enough that we couldn't out turn them, nor out climb or dive after them. However, working together Peter 'Bully' Peltie claimed two whilst the local infantry and artillery put down the other two. Secu landed near a village with wounds and the rest of us headed for home but landed near an infantry encampment to get our bearings.

This mission was flown by:
Maj Eldwin Bennet
Cpt Peter 'Pariah' Gunstone
Lt Angus 'Secu' Lond
2nd Lt Eugene 'Jammy' Chapman
2nd Lt Peter 'Bully' Peltie

Claims by:

2nd Lt Peter 'Bully' Peltie claims 2 x Albatros D.II

The time had come for an offensive patrol deep into enemy territory. They might have their new fangled Albatros D.II Lt but we had our DH2 and more pluck and spunk than the Bosch could throw at us.

Before we had got sausage side the blighters were seen. Six Albatri of Jasta 10. Cpt Peter 'Pariah' Gunstone had hung back and gained some height from where he could drop on the unsuspecting Hun. The major and the others had got stuck in. It was a successful sortie with several claims being made but No.29 soon had to withdraw when ammo was low and DFWs came in. Lt Eugene 'Jammy' Chapman and 2nd Lt Peter 'Bully' Peltie were injured in the fight and had crashed nearby.

Maj Eldwin Bennet
Cpt Peter 'Pariah' Gunstone

This morning we had an award to be given out. 2nd Lt Peter 'Bully' Peltie was awarded the Military Cross and then promoted to Lieutenant. We had a small drink but then it was time to get up and at 'em.

During this altercation with the enemy Lt Eugene 'Jammy' Chapman was brought down and severely injured. Whilst in hospital he was presented with a promotion to Captain. He may be some time recuperating and it is believed he is being transferred home to lead a training camp. We need new pilots and Cpt Eugene 'Jammy' Chapman is just the man to train them.

The new year beckons and No.29 still find themselves in the DH2. A small patrol was sent up to deal with incoming e/a's. Unfortunately we lost the Major up in the clouds and couldn't find him again. We flew around in an attempt to find him or the enemy but put down in a field near a village when we couldn't find him.

Today is a sad day. We had taken off in good order as is usual for No.29 and followed the Major over no mans land. Bully and Nev got sidetracked chasing some Roland C.IIs and we hung back with Major. Bully took some damage and his engine eventually gave in and he tried to glide back over no mans land, eventually ditching his crate just on the German side. He has not returned and so it is with great sadness that Lt Peter 'Bully' Peltie is reported Missing in Action.

In other news our patrol scored on balloon kill. The final hits being achieved by Cpt Peter 'Pariah' Gunstone.

This mission was flown by:
Maj Henry Brayles
Cpt Peter 'Pariah' Gunstone claims 1 x Balloon
Lt Peter 'Bully' Peltie - MIA
2nd Lt Herman 'Broadsword' Borrell
2nd Lt Elias 'Bunny' Parsons

This was to be our last mission in the Airco DH2. It has stuck with us for nine months or so and been a good friend but it's starting to feel its age. Six Albatri were spotted coming towards us on or patrol and 29 set about them with all their might. These were the new D.IIIs and they were good. Despite our disadvantage or speed, manoeuvrability and climb rate we acquitted ourselves marvellously. Lt Elias 'Bunny' Parsons got one of the blighters as did 2nd Lt Dwight 'Bully' Fromage got another but it was Cpt Peter 'Pariah' Gunstone with three kills who stole the show. The second of these was a rear attack. He rammed into the tail plane of a Jasta 5 Albatros and caused the pilot to crash. His third and final kill of the sortie was another collision but this put his own plane into a spin and crash. He walked away though with a few bruises. The new major was unfortunately killed in this engagement. I also have to bring you the bad news that this was the final sortie for Lt Elias 'Bunny' Parsons. He died when an Albatros collided with him.

This mission was flown by:
Maj Culver Mauntell - KIA
Cpt Peter 'Pariah' Gunstone
Lt Angus 'Secu' Lond
Lt Elias 'Bunny' Parsons - KIA
2nd Lt Dwight 'Bully' Fromage
2nd Lt Roland 'Jammy' Cheddar
2nd Lt Herman 'Broadsword' Borrell

Claims:
2nd Lt Dwight 'Bully' Fromage claims 1 x Albatros D.III
Lt Elias 'Bunny' Parsons claims 1 x Albatros D.III
Cpt Peter 'Pariah' Gunstone claims 3 x Albatros D.III

All in all this was a fitting end to the DH2. The Nieuport 17.C1 GBRs are en-route.
