Black screen that must mean it's a bank holiday wknd

Post by Welshy » Sat May 01, 2021 12:49 pm

My sons Pc was on when the screens went onto standby (black screen) haven't been able to get it to display anything since.

When I turn it on the lights come on and the fans spin though perhaps slower and quieter than they usually do. The rear fan has on occasion stopped spinning then started again. There's is a post/beep when I power the tower on the screens don't register any signal so no bios.

I removed the graphics card and used the mobo hdmi as the GPU is old. Still nothing. Though I'm not sure if the mobo has onboard garaphics.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

System:

CPU: AMD 3600
Mobo: x570 Aorus elite
RAM: 16GB RAM
GPU: AMD 7950 (2011)

The post beeps will tell you what is wrong, you should be able to look up the beep pattern in either the mobo manual or online.

I'll swap out the GPU for another and see how that goes. Thank you

Found this (not in the manual it just says "there are beep codes but I won't tell you which")

1 short beep :System normal
2 short beep :CMOS Error
1 long beep and 1 short beep:Memory error
1 long beep and 2 short beep:Graphic card error
1 long beep and 3 short beep :AGP error
1 long beep and 9 short beep :Memory Error
Continuous long beep :Memory not correctly installed
Continuous short beep :Power supply unit failed

Thanks Donkey and Konaber checked the manual online and couldnt find anything about posting/beeps. With the graphics card out the system posts 1 beep (no display but kildren has explained that) with the graphics card in the system it doesnt beep at all. the fans just rev twice and then idol.

going to swap out the RAM just to rule it out.

Interesting. No GPU, 1 beep, makes sense. GPU in *no* beeps suggests your not even getting to POST with it in. So that makes me think of two things. Firstly, and more obviously, the GPU is badly fritzed. Secondly, and forgive me for not knowing, does that GPU take a power feed from the PSU? If so, could the PSU be b0rked? And even without a feed it could *still* be the PSU and the incremental load by just having the card in is causing the issue. Got a second PSU to test?

Welshy, exactly the same happened with my sons PC a couple of mths back ... We made sure everything GPU, Memory were all seated correctly - They were.
Checked the PSU and all the connections all were good.
The final thing we checked that solved the issue was reapplying cooling (thermal) paste to the CPU and cooling fan ...
The CPU was overheating so was turning itself off straight away. Its been working fine ever since.

I hope you get it sorted for him!

That is a possibility, but heat spiking to the point of powering off *before* POST is pretty uncommon. Normally you'd get at least to that, and even into windows before thermal protection kicks in. Worth looking at though if everything else checks out.

Thanks seb this is what I was worried about as all the parts except for the GPU are new. Though I thought the cpu being the issue as unlikely as I replaced the cpu cooler about 6 months ago and watched the temps very closely for a while after and it stayed cool underload.

As it stands I put my GPU in the system, 1 beep and it booted to desktop after some windows recovery stuff.
The resolution was low. I set it to 1080 and it looked fine.
I checked the temps and they are cool. 34-37.
Task manager showed everything running normal apart from the GPU which wasn't listed at all.
Will this be because the old GPU was an AMD 7950 with AMD drivers and I put my Nvidia GPU in without drivers?
