HOWTO: Stop the COD Killer Win KB2670838

CLOD Public Enemy No1: Windows7/8 patch KB2670838

This evil Windows patch has caused more CTDs and kicked wifes, kids and dogs than an empty beer barrel. It is usually good to find it amongst your Win Control Panel Software Installed programs, and uninstall it.

Problem is, MS can reinstall it on you when you aren't looking for it. What I suggest is turning off automatic MS Update installing, so that you can pick and choose which to install and which to not enable in the update list.

Another thing you can do, is the next time you see KB2670838 in the to be updated list, right click on it and select HIDE. This will effectively put that patch in an exclusion state so that it wont be offered again.

I've got Win8.1, and it's never been installed on my host. (also by default, I do not allow automatic installs. will keep an eye out for it). Maybe a Win7 only thingy?

Reading the description, it does say Win7 update.

Also to help find it, instead of manually reading through the list of installed or to be installed KB updates; there is a search field in the upper right of the install selection page. Just type in part or whole of the KB 2670838 and it should find it.

I just ran I check and I have it on my system. Looks like it was installed on 2nd July this year - but I've not had any CTDs at all. Maybe it is a combination of things?

On a similar CLOD KILLER note...

At one time there was a golden rule to remove the LOGO.WMA file:
Install path...\Steam\SteamApps\common\IL-2 Sturmovik Cliffs of Dover\parts\core\GUI

And then also to make sure the DOTNET and VCREDIST were updated:
...\Steam\SteamApps\common\IL-2 Sturmovik Cliffs of Dover\redist\DotNetFx40_Client
...\Steam\SteamApps\common\IL-2 Sturmovik Cliffs of Dover\redist\VCRedist

These were the usual suspects that caused CLOD to freeze or crash (apart from graphics card and settings related sources)
