Anyway, I am not very familiar with Japanese historiography, but from my education I know that each national historiography school has a tendency to celebrate their heroes just to completely turn their perspective bringing up the dark side only. Each approach is biased and balanced views are usually not very common. I've been to Ireland recently and my tutor on Irish history pointed that out as well. I went to a few bookshops and bookstores to see it myself... Yep, it was true.
May be you could come up with particular operations where he is nowadays thought to fail and we may have a close look.
