Mission 3 : 14 July 1940

Post by Bounder » Sat Nov 10, 2012 10:04 pm

Second Storm of War Campaign

Mission 3 (Sat 10/11/12):
Duration: 40 minutes
Home Airfield: RAF Hawkinge
Aircraft: SH-B; Spitfire Ia 100 Octane

64 Squadron transferred to RAF Hawkinge, received orders to protect allied shipping again, this time moving past Folkstone. 64 split into two sections - red and pink; flying as red one, our quartet ( Fenris, Yranac, myself and 56 Rumba) got airborne first and climbed over Folkstone to angels 16, then, following orders we vectored towards the Cap Gris Nez climbing to angels 18. On route we were informed of a bomber formation mid channel at angels 13, before we turned back we spotted a formation of 4 single engine fighters off Cap Gris Nez, Red Squadron dove to engage but bogies were identified as Spitfires. We broke off and vectored back from Cap Gris Nez to the allied shipping at Folkstone which were now being attacked by Ju87s.

Arriving at allied shipping we identified 109s at 13-15 thousand, Red section attacked. I became engaged with 2 109s and dragged them lower, over the ships where my 100 Oct Spitfire 1a performs best. I got hits quickly into the 1st 109 who dove further to around 3000ft. I pressed my attack getting more hits into him as he entered vertical scissors. The 109 was heavily venting both vapor and oil and I broke off to engage the second 109. I quickly got onto the 2nd 109s six and I closed and got hits across his cockpit and nose, the 109 was evasive but as the hits landed on the cockpit, the 109 suddenly stopped maneuvering - the pilot had been killed and his 109 went into the drink. I then turned my attention to another 109 (possibly a 3rd 109) who was trying head on passes at me - on his second attempt after the 2nd 109 had gone in, I evaded, climbed in a right hand turn as he passed me I rolled on top of him. I got hits into his six o'clock, he initiated vertical scissors - I maintained my position behind him and kept plugging away, getting racking shots across his tail, wings, cockpit and engine - he began to vent, I kept plugging away he became slow, his engine obviously struggling but I ran out of ammunition. As I broke off I saw a Hurricane and Spitfires dive in to finish him off.

I RTB to RAF Hawkinge, shortly after landing I could see flack firing over the airfield, the remaining 109s were in the area attempting to vulch allied fighters landing at Hawkinge. I saw Hurricanes and Spitfires arrive and could only watch from the ground the dogfight whiring above as I screamed at my ground crew to get my Spitfire rearmed!

Claims:
partial claim on the 1st 109 (0.38);
the 2nd 109 was destroyed (pk'd) (1.0) http://70.176.212.41:8888/Campaign/html ... yerid=2092;
the 3rd 109 heavily damaged and is a probable.
However, whilst ingame netstats recorded 2 kills (1.38 - see below) before my plane despawned, the SoW campaign stats only list the 1st partial kill (0.38)

Pilot: OK
Plane: SH-B: OK (however SoW campaign records 1 damage received from Hans Gruber - didn't notice it myself - SoW awarded Gruber a kill for my Spitfire after I landed and despawned)

Little pee'd off at the way stats are working - I put one 109 in solo, put another in to claim partial, and heavily damage a 3rd one and I only get recognition for one partial kill. I apparently take a graze and the blue pilot gets a 1.0 for me when I land and despawn! Grrrrr! (never thought I was a stats whore but when I put 109s in I expect to get points for it!)

Mission No.3 (04.11.2012)
Date: 14th July 1940
Location: Lympne airfield
A/C: Hurricane Mk1 (100 oct) - SD-X
Duration: 37 minutes

Took of from Lympne airfield as Red leader with SAC Sidich as Red 2 and LAC Meaker as Red 3 to patrol over the ships. Location and altitude reached as quickly as possible, location reported to the Command. We've been vectored to a large formation of enemy a/c at Angels 13, identified as 30+ Stukas with heavy escort which I believe we spotted first of all Squadrons scrambled in the air and reported so to the Command. We charged to attack immediately from enemy's 2 o'clock position but about 3 miles from the main bomber force, we spotted another threat on our 9 o'clock position - these were 2 Bf-110 heavy fighters slightly below us. By continuing to attack, we risked getting atatcked by these as they spotted us certainly and climbed furiously. I ordered to break left into climbing combat turn and attacked the leader imemdiately. I scored multiple hits from 300 yards down to 100, enemy a/c was left streaming fuel and glycol in an evasive maneuveur which I did not follow. I noticed the e/a had bombs under its belly, but I can't confirm this 100%-ly as there were parts of the engine cowlings missing and one wheel down. After the attack, I noticed there were more contacts above us, both Spitfires and 109s, I kept on climbing at full power, covering SAC Siddich's attack on the same Bf 110. He scored good hits, sending the e/a into steep dive ending up ina glorious splash. I confirm one Bf 110 destroyed by SAC Siddich, I claim this very same e/a damaged. LAC Meaker got involved in a melee with 109s and took some hits, as per orders he disengaged from the fight and try to land back at Lympne. Due to the extend of the damage, he was forced to B/O though. I got also attacked by a 109 head-on, I avoided his attack and watched him go vertical, he lost patience in his second attack and followed me into a tight spiral turn, he realised his mistake before I could outturn him and escaped in a steep dive. I've also seen one enemy fighter in a spin, detached wing following a parachute. Very impressive. Forming up with SAC Siddich in Dover area at Angels 14, we saw that the extent of the damage done to the shipping was very minor and the Stuka attack was not succesful at all. We reported our position to the Command again and at the very same moment we spotted a lone 109 direcly below us. I attacked immediately and scored multiple hits. 109 was left streaming heavily. We got orders to retreat to Eastchurch and avoid fighting the 109s as our main target, the Stukas left the area already. We descended slowly to Angels 8 and landed safely at Eastchurch. Not bad show for 3 Hurricanes.

Claims:
1x Bf 110 destroyed in cooperation with SAC Siddich, full credit to SAC Siddich
1x Bf 109 damaged

Aircraft: OK
Pilot: OK

Mission 3 (Saturday 10/11/12)
Date: July 14, 1940 - 1455
Starting airfield: Lympne
Aircraft: SD-H, Hurricane Mk1 100 oct
Duration: 39 min

Took off from Lympne as Red 2 formed on with Robo as Red 1 and Meaker as Red 3.
Circled the airfield to get some altitude and then flew towards the ships at AX22, circled them in about 16.000ft. Found some Stukas (perhaps a formation of 30) a little bit lower, heading towards the ships from the french coast, and some small contacts a little bit higher behind them, and decided to keep on climbing. Then had contact with two 110s and decided to attack. Robo got one streaming near the right engine. I hit the plane near the cockpit (killed the pilot) so he went in ;-)
After a few seconds I was followed by a 109 and dived down to 8.000ft, lost formation. So we decided to form up over Dover.

After I got rid of my follower, I circled over Dover and formed up on Robos right wing climbed again to 15.000ft or something, had contact with a 109 a little bit lower. Robo again took a shot on him and managed to damage it (streaming - I think) , but we lost him out of sight and kept on climbing. Then we got the order to RTB. Flew back to Eastchurch, as this was more secure than the airbases at the southcoast (some 109s where still around there). Got the order to land at first. Landed my crate with at least half of my ammunition and fuel left - no damages.

Claims:
1x Bf 110 destroyed

Pilot ok
Plane: clear for the next flight ;-)

Mission No.3 (10.11.2012)
Date: 14th July 1940
Location: Lympne
A/C: Hurricane Mk1 (100 oct) - SD-A - L2045

Due to initial problems with coms I was late reaching my aircraft, so took off alone as part of Red Section. Just as I was wheels up we got a call from Control to RTB, but as it was to Eastchurch rather than Lympne I thought I would try and link up with the rest of Red Section on their way there, who seemed to have already had all the fun and were heading home having scored a few kills. Upon climbing up to meet them I was informed of a Furball just off Dover. As this was more or less my location, I requested from F/O Robo that I be released to engage. The request was granted, I headed East, found the furball with a number of contacts in, ID'd one as a Hurricane, but could not reach the others. As they had a slight height advantage on me and given that I was in a Hurricane it seemed a bit risky, I dived away and disengaged. As I was doing so, I was given reports of 109's strafing Hawkindge. I could see ack, but could not get visual on any contacts. Ack soon stopped, so I passed on the message to Red Leader to pass on to HQ that the coast was, at least temporarily, clear. I was then given word that there was a 109 bouncing spitfires that were RTBing up by Deal, so started to make my way that way, only to find the situation was all in hand, and that the 109's were back strafing Hawkindge again. I was told there were four contacts, and was on my own, but thought I'd risk it for a bit of action after the frustration of the technical problems. Came in high, indentified one target and dove on him as he was pulling away, but never managed to get in firing range. Another 109 came up from strafing the airfield, I pulled round hard, mostly avoiding him, but he got a few good shots into my engine, killing it immidiately. As I was near Hawkindge I thought I'd risk a wheels down landing, but came in too fast, overshot massively, and ended up landing, still wheels down, in amongst the hills to the north of the Airfield. I landed all in one piece, with all three wheels on the ground (after bouncing very highly three times). Although the assesment 'Crash Landed' was given, in my eyes there was nothing 'crash' about it.

Aircraft: All in one piece, but the engine is dead
Pilot: Mentally frustrated, phsyically ok

2nd Storm of War campaign

Mission 3 (Saturday 10/11/12):
Duration: 60 Minutes
Home Airfield: RAF Hawkinge
Aircraft: SH-K; Spitfire Ia 100 Octane

We were ordered to CAP a convoy, passing Dungeness on its way towards Dover harbour. I was assigned to pink wing (who gave the wing that colour, must be a effing fag  ). We took off in second place. Unfortunately Tyrone was not able to stay with us, because of a malfunctioning radio and RTBed. As W/L Nitrous and i were passing over the ships, we spotted 30+ JU-87s with escorting 109s dropping on the ships! Only good thing, the hun is lousy at dropping bombs. Nitrous and i were engaged by 109s, ending in Nitrous having to ditch, due to engine damage. I received minor damage to the right wing, but was able to continue the fight. I saw a Hurricane in a fight with a 110 and tried to help out, when i got engaged by a 109 again. I broke away, effectively clearing my tail and latched onto a 109. I scored a few hits, but no major damage inflicted. After a few unsuccessful attempts to get onto the six of 109s, i headed north towards Folkestone, as command reported contacts in the area. After circling the area for 15 minutes, i made my way towards Canterbury. On approaching Canterbury, i received reports of contacts over Deal. As i had still left 12 seconds of ammo left, i decided to investigate the area. On reaching Deal, command informed everyone of 109s strafing Hawkinge. I immediately altered my course towards Hawkinge, climbing to Angels 10. I saw white puffs at my lower 10 and behold, there she is, a yellow nosed bastard, more commonly known as a BF-109. I dove onto her and just as i got into firing range, she bunted away hard. Unable to follow, i initiated a barrel roll and tried to get on her six again. Unable to latch onto the 109, i climbed up and dove onto her again. The 109 was diving away towards france and i tried to follow and gain on her. However the 109 outran me and i just let loose of a few bullets in frustration. As i was fixated on my target, i did not notice a 109 sneaking up on my six, who unfortunately took out my radiator. I instantly disengaged and returned towards Hawkinge, luckily the 109 broke off pursuit. As i was over Folkestone, my engine died, at which point i glided in a left hand circuit towards Hawkinge, where i crashed.

Claims: 1, maybe 2 109s damaged.
Plane: SpitfireMk1a (100 Octane) damaged (airscrew damage, left wing lost, engine damaged)
Pilot: a few scrapes and burns, but nothing major

Form:540
Mission No.3 (10.11.2012)
Date: 14th July 1940
Location: Lympne Airfield
A/C: Hurricane Mk1 (100 oct) - SD-G
Duration: 20 minutes

Got airborne from Lympne airfield immediately as Red3 ,following F/O Robo as Red leader and SAD Siddich as Red 2.We then climbed up to our vectored altitude and location, and on reaching our position I was then bounced by bandits,I did'nt even see them coming!

On being bounced I radioed F/O Robo to inform him I was breaking formation and then took evasive action by making a left banking dive to the deck to avoid anymore damage to my aircraft,as I made my manoeuvre I took stock of this damage which was pretty considerable. Both wings were shot up,and as I tried to put her down at RAF Hawkinge for an emergency landing it was apparent that damage had also occured to the elevators too,so with the damage now making it impossible to land safely and my altitude decreasing rapidly I decided to bail out.

My parachute deployed and I landed safely somewhere on a farm located on the perimeter of RAF Hawkinge, only to be met by some over zealous farmer with a pitch fork who thought I was a hun!........silly arse.

Aircraft:Wrecked
Pilot: Safe and ok
