Mission 14: August 18th 1940 [repeat]

18th August 1940
Mission 14 (Sun 06/01/13):
Duration: ~39 minutes
Home Airfield: RAF Kenley
Aircraft: SH-B; Spitfire 2a

After a long break I am back on active duty, 64 squadron fielded 10 Spitfires today which were split into two sections: Red & Blue. I believe we lost one or two pilots in the air to disconnects. Flying as Red 1 with Darkshadow, Looky, Binkitone & Gromic. We were scrambled and received orders to intercept a large bomber raid - at angels 20 near Canterbury we made contact with a large squadron of 109s at 11 o'clock, at around angels 18, as we passed over them I ordered Red section to roll in and attack. The 109s went evasive and as we approached individuals they dove away, myself and Gromic maintained our altitude and attempted to engage 109s but they ran away. We became separated but both spotted 2 large formations of bombers heading inland from Dover, as we approached Yranac from Blue section reported he was also closing on the area. The bombers had at least two 109 squadrons covering - the three of us couldn't attempt to dogfight two full squadrons of 109s and since the bombers are the RAFs primary target I ordered us to hit & run the bombers before the fighters got onto us. We made our attack runs, I attacked the first formation (DO-17s) from and damaged one of the Dorniers who vented heavily and went down but I received damage to my left gun port (claim 1 DO-17 destroyed). I swung around and attacked the second bomber formation (Ju88s), I got hits into a Ju88s right engine which set alight and I watched the crew bail as the Ju88 went down (claim 1 Ju88 destroyed). I carried on through to attack the Dorniers again and got hits into and damaging another DO-17 but as I passed through I received damage from their nose gunners and began to vent radiator coolant. I signaled over R/T that I would RTB, heading for Kenley, however my engine began to fail near to Maidstone and so I landed at RAF Maidstone. During our attack on the bombers, Gromic had identified a third wave of bombers lagging behind the first two.

Claims: 2 destroyed (1 Ju88, 1 DO-17); plus 1 DO-17 damaged
Aircraft: SH-B damage to radiator and engine
Pilot: OK, landed at RAF Maidstone.

18th August 1940
Mission 14 (Sun 06/01/13):
Home Airfield: RAF Gravesend
Aircraft: SD-H, Hurricane MkI 100 oct (Red 4)

When we reached the bombers we got attacked by several 109s, so we engaged, and I managed to damage one of them, and made another one streaming (must have went down near Kenley or Maidstone). whilst that fight I lost contact with the rest of the squardon, so I decided to climb against these bombers again. A few miles northeast of Littlestone I spotted a Schwarm of 109s a little bit lower than me, and I decided to attack again. I managed to make another one streaming. As I was diving down, Tech Hawes came in to help me. He could see the streaming 109 going in, but was then fought by the other 109s, so I had to help him out. Whilst that fight I managed to damage another 109. In this fight we lost each other, and I heard, that Hawes had to do a belly landing. I was chased towards North and at least two of the 109s emptied their guns on me. With two big holes in each wing and a unabled rudder, I was able to fly towards Gravesend and land there. (or at least I would have been able to land there if the server hadn't reached time out)

Claims:
-1 confirmed kill (Bf 109)
-1 probable kill (Bf 109)
-2 damaged 109s

Aircraft:
- SD-H damaged on guns (both wings), wingstructure and rudder

Pilot:
ok

Mission 14 (06/01/2013)
Date: 18th August 1940
Duration: 50 minutes
Home Airfield: RAF Gravesend
Aircraft: SD-N, Hurricane Mk1 (100 oct)

Scrambled at Gravesend as Red 2, wingman to Red Leader (Sqn Ldr Osprey). We flew to RAF Kenley to rendevous with Bikerjack, a new pilot looking to join the natty chaps in 501. Reaching Kenley at 14,000ft, we headed towards Biggin Hill and soon afterwards spotted two bomber formations, one co-alt and one lower. Noticing the lower formation had fighter escorts, we chose the co-alt formation as they looked clean of 109s. Unfortunately for us, as we reached the bombers, almost head on, we noticed four 109s behind what turned out to be Dornier Do 17s. All got stuck in from the side, I managed to get one Dornier venting glycol from both engines - I can't see him making it home but can't claim anything. I took hits from his rear gunner, swung the old Hurri under the belly of that Do and headed on to the next using my speed to get me out of trouble. I managed to get more into a second bomber, but my plane started to shake from the earlier hits. Realising I had little time left in the air, I emptied my ammo into this last plane as best I could, causing the left-hand engine to vent glycol, and the right-hand to vent black, though not enough to tell me the engine was instantly dead. I claim this as a probable - he wasn't going far. A split second after slamming my ammo into this bomber I took more hits from another bomber and my generator gave in. Luckily for me I could see Biggin Hill below me, so nosing down I managed to glide to a wheel-down landing, saving the old bird for another go at Jerry, once the mechanics got to work with their Band-Aid.

Claims: 1 probable
Aircraft: Damaged but landed intact.
Pilot: Shaken, not stirred.
