Mission date: 1st Dec 2013
Aerodrome: Manston
Aeroplane: Hurricane Mk1 100 Oct/ KW-T/ L2098

Synopsis: No.615 scrambled from Manston and flew S climbing to Angles 21. We turned N again while over Dover and were vectored to patrol the area 12 miles N of Ramsgate. Shortly after reaching the patrol zone we were re-vectored to Manston. As we approached the coast Sgt Random spotted some contacts and was cleared to peel off and investigate with his wingman, Tech Dots. A few minutes later I led the rest of the flight down after we spotted more contacts over Manston. L/A Clown and I were engaged with two Me109 and I managed to damage one of them. L/A Clown was then damaged and had to RTB.
The rest of my flight had become split up, so I flew to link up with No. 501 who were reporting contacts off Deal. I joined the fight and got some good bursts into another ME109 and I followed him until he dropped into the drink. One less place at breakfast tomorrow for Fritz.
I then turned for home and landed at Manston.

Claims:
Destroyed:1 Me 109
Probable: N/A
Damaged:1 Me 109

Lost
Pilot status: OK

Mission date: 1st Dec 2013
Aerodrome: Rochester
Aeroplane: Spitfire IIa / SH-R / P9563

Fired up my engine at Rochester and set my compass. Waited for PINK, RED and WHITE flight to take off and then formed up on the runway. Took off from Rochester and formed up on Tyrone in a left hand circuit. We then headed east towards manston and the other 3 flights in a hard climb to 20,000ft+. As we patrolled the area just east off of manston we were looking for contacts but had troubled locating the enemy hun. We then got confirmation that the hun were over manston at 12,000ft+. We dropped altitude to confirm the contacts and saw a huge formation of 110's with heavy fighter escort flying above. Before engaging we made a left hand circuit over the battle to determine which hun was the right one to dive on. Once in battle everything went out of control, there were planes and tracers everywhere and it was hard to determine who was who. I saw a 109 sixing a fellow spitfire and vectored towards them. I got on the six on the 109 and put a quick burst into his aircraft and saw a huge plume of white smoke come out of the bottom of his aircraft and he made a sharp turn to the left. I then repeated the same process again and climbed up to see who would be my next victim. By then the battle had dispersed and there were dogfights happening over and around manston. I engaged another 109 but could not fire my guns due to a 109 trying to get his guns on me. I made a sharp turn to the left and dove down. He continued on his course and did not go after me. By this time the battle was over the channel at around 5000ft+. the hun was on the run I then again saw a lone 109 on a right hand circuit over the dogfight. I turned into his curcuit and got right behind him before I unloaded my guns into the hun. He tried to lose me but my mighty spitfire was better. by this time the battle was pretty much over and tyrone was in the area. I formed on tyrone and we headed back to ramsgate to land. Due to other flights landing we made a left circuit of ramsgate before we were able to land. On our approach we slowed right down and made decent smooth landings. Thats all there is to report.

Date: December 1
Airfield: Rochester
Aeroplane: Spitfire IIa / SH-P / K9964

Report: Crappy start of the day. 64 got a call, took off and formed up, nerves all jittery headed east when it turned out to be a false alarm. Bugger the RDF guys.

Back down we waited at the dispersal, me chainsmoking and going over everything once more in my head. Radiator open. Don\t burn out. Keep combat spacing. Check six. Watch the RPM\s... There goes the bell again. Jerry better make his bloody appointment this time.

I flew as White 2, Vranac leading the flight, taking off as the second element in the squad. Enemy formations reported forming up over Calais, Manston being the suspected target. We climbed hard into the rising sun, making it difficult to spot incoming. Not that it mattered, as I had my hands full keeping my sweet spot to the right of White One.

Red flight started pulling contrails and we got radar reports coming on, but the 64 being unable to tally the raid somewhere below us. Swearing ensued as Pink One started letting off steam. After a while the reports confirmed that Manston had been hit by a mixed force of bf 110 and 109's and 64 dropped altitude, coming in from the north.

Suddenly everthing dissolves. Radio calls going left and right. Crosses darting back and forth. Theres one. Yellow nose. Theres another. Three more. Christ. Guess Goering followed through this morning. I kept my eyes on White One as he broke hard to stay on a 109 breaking left just feet wet over Manston. We went around in circles, White One firing shots, but could not confirm hits as the low sun made it diffucult to spot. The radio exloded with combat chatter.

Suddenly a 109 trails white smoke and plunge towards the ground, 1 minute into the engagement. Did 64 get first blood? Who the hell knows. Where the hell was White One, there, thank God. On the radio the Skipper was hard at work giving direction while everyone were darting all over the shop. "Don't brake, keep your energy", "109's coming in!" "I'm at Manston and I can't see a bloody thing."

A couple of 109's made passes at White One and me at a high deflection but they missed. I kept watching his tail and called out, letting him concentrate on getting busy bagging Jerry. For some reason I managed to stay with him in the frantic furball, tunnel vision all the way. He turned and burned with a 109 which finally climbed and then suddenly popped white smoke. White one confirmed on the radio.

After that we followed a number of contacts south, just fet wet of Dover. I could see a number of Hurricanes limping about.

Brave little Hurricanes. They do their part.

After this the engagement dissolved and I rejoined with White One over Deal and landed at Ramsgate. I almost buggered the landing as I was about to piss myself, but somehow got the crate down. The sky above me filled up with Spits landing in pairs. Time to re-arm and refuel.
I never fired my guns.

Pilot:OK
Crate: Undamaged. Without a scratch.

Can't find the Forum topic: 'RAF Form 540 Pre-Campaign Mission Sunday 1st December' so I tagged it here:

December 1: Form 540
No.64 Squadron SH-W
Place: Rochester
Second Flight to take off as Red Two of 2 Spitfires MkIIs, to form up with White, Pink and Blue Flights, total squadron of 10 aircraft on heading 90 degrees. Steady climbing at 2500 ft/minute passing south of Eastchurch. Tasked as wingman to Red Leader One (SH-Q), trailing on his six at an increasing climb rate to 3000 ft/minute, engine getting much to hot, requesting to throttle back in just in time as we reach 20k, easing back climb rate to normal as we approached Manston.
Following in a left turn looking for the Hun while passing 23k mading contrails. Reports from other squadrons of contrails made us wary of probable 109s or was it ours they are seeing? One of our flights sighted contacts below at our 11 o'clock and peeled off in quick pursuit. I followed Red Leader One closely in a shallow left hand dive as he eventually spotted a other 109s, as he closed on one, the 109 climb sharply to the right in front of me, a rare opportunity for me as I pulled up to bear my gun sights, pressing the trigger for only a burst of couple of seconds, advise to break off unfortunately.
Unable to make any other close contacts for the remainder of the mission. Finally landed at Ramsgate, sustained no damage to aircraft and alive!

....and that is your ultimate goal. Well done Binkitone!

Osprey, have you found a way to see in which channels a thread is located? I just checked the Royal Air Force channel and this thread doesn't seem to be in that one. Would be great if there was a forum option of seeing the thread path.

Asking because I wanted to create a new thread "RAF Form 540 Pre-Campaign Mission Sunday 24th November" and move pertinant posts accordingly.

EDIT: Nevermind, I've figured out how to move Binky's post. Done.

Aerodrome:RAF Manston
Aeroplane:Hurricane Mk1 100 OCT / SD-G/ P2793

Synopsis:

Took off South into the Channel from RAF Manston with 501 Sqn,climbing up to around Angels 22 over North East of Southend with P/O Bunny leading the section.Whilst flying through very dense cloud cover,I lost sight of the flight and got temporarily split up from them, however after a while of patrolling this same area,we got vectored back to Manston to intercept hostiles moving along the coast to the North Foreland and I was able to rejoin.

I spotted the hostile threat which was a large group of Me110's moving from our starboard to port, and vocally pointed our chaps in the general direction the 110's were heading.I slipped back into our formation and we set about chasing the hun invader's down, making them turn back into the Channel whilst giving them no quarter.

As I made after a straggler of the group I came under fire myself and ended up in the drink.

Claims
Destroyed:2 Me110's (1 of these was shared with P/O Bunny)
Probable:1 Me110
Damaged:N/A

Mission date: 1st Dec 2013
Aerodrome:RAF Manston
Aeroplane: Hurricane Mk1 100 OCT / SD-F/ L1953

I was one of 7 Hurricanes in 501 sqn Scrambled by group to patrol north off the coast of Ramesgate after reports of a heavy raid incoming. With the C/O away on R&R his no.2 was in charge. After quickly getting airbourne I was the last to get off, as we climbed to angels 10 my engine decided to splutter and then die on me. I informed the wing I was going to RTB back to Manston, after a few minutes of having turned back to Manston and losing altitude I suddenly regained engine power so took a chance and headed north to pick up my flight. On reaching the patrol area and contacting the other members of 501 I began to close and rejoin, as I was closing on the flight we were suddenly vectored back to Manston as a large raid was inbound. As we came over the airfield we could see a large scrap developing on the edge of the coast, with the height advantage we fell on a Me110 formation as I closed to 150 yards of the tail end bomber I fired a contiuous burst into him and he quickly belly rolled and went into the drink. With the contact over a the remains heading back to France i was left seperated from the flight, so I returned to Manston.

Mission date: 1st Dec 2013
Aerodrome:Manston
Aeroplane: Hurricane / KW-N /

Took off from manston and climbed hard to around 20-21000 feet. We were directed north of ramsgate to patrol in wait of any gerry bombers heading up towards the estuary. After only a few minutes we recieved a call to return to manston ASAP. we swung round and headed back. I Spotted 4 contacts in a loose group off to our low 9 and asked for permission to investigate. Upon approval I made a 45 degree turn left hoping to intercept without being spotted. Unfortunately I lost them in some cloud and turned back towards manston.

There was a swarm of contacts in the area and I dived on the nearest one, a 109. I got nicely on his 6 but I fear that my aim was not up to par. I missed several times but the 109 didn't seem to notice. Too busy trying to follow one of our chaps. I regret to report that I too was guilty of getting fixated on my target, and after finally scoring a few hits and seeing a little vapour trailing from the 109's wings I felt a series of heavy impacts on my airframe and lost all aeleron authority.

I didn't hang about with an enemy on my tail and no control, jettisoning my canopy and hopping over the side.

Claims
Destroyed: 0
Probable: 0
Damaged: 1 BF109
