Interesting what he says about the German soldiers an Allied behaviour at 17:47.

God Bless Fred and may he finally rest in peace, void of the horrors that haunted him. Thanks Paddy, his recollection had me quite jarred.

My Grandfather was of a similar mind.

"I was only there because the Germans were there. And they were there because I was there."

He was quite upset that they had to abandon the rest of the crew of Bismarck after someone spotted a U-Boat that wasn't there.

Yup, I dont recollect hearing before from someone who went to war so green and frankly, I wanted to give the poor fella a hug,
“I went into a shell and I never came out of it.”
Us ‘modern’ types are just a bunch of wet hankies that get traumatised when the biscuit tin is empty.
