Operation Firestarter - Mission 2 Review
The English Summer of 1940 continued to provide clear skies for the German raids on Saturday the 27th of October.
The Hurricane pilots of 151 Sqn were given their briefing that they had failed in their objective the previous week. Too many bombers reached their target and they needed to 'up their game' in the words of Dowding...
This week they would be joined by some reinforcements from 64 Sqn operating out of Biggin Hill. The Hurricanes were advised that after their first sortie they would be refueling and rearming from Hawkinge, the Spitfires would then be operating from Manston.
The Germans planned a heavy strike of the radar installations in the setting afternoon sun. Sites at Dover, Ash and Dunkirk (English Dunkirk not France) JU87's poured across the channel, with every serviceable Stuka being thrown at these three raids. This was followed by ME110's being sent to raid the Airfields of Biggin Hill and Kenley.
Fierce dogfights ensued over the Southern Coast with many of the ME110's being turned back from their raid and many lost and scattered across the English countryside. The JU87's also took a beating but most of them hit their objectives.
The RAF did well, shooting down many enemy aircraft however the Radar network was badly damaged.
As the RAF landed and rearmed and refuelled, the Germans snuck in a low level raid of JU88's into Manston from Denmark, causing the Spitfires to scramble and become engaged again. 151 Sqn was scrambled and told to climb to Angels 25 to patrol the Manston/Ramsgate area with supporting Spitfires.
5th Staffel of the Luftwaffe had landed from their first escort sortie of the JU87's to re-arm and immediately take off again to catch up with a large 54 aircraft HE111 bomber raid heading to the King George Docks in London. These bombers left France at contrail height in the setting sun and 5th Staffel caught up with the five waves of bombers as they approached the Eastern coastline of England.
It was not long before the RAF saw the incoming raid and began the first of many engagements as the bombers headed for London. Gravesend and North Weald had been put on standby for re-arm and refueling duties and running engagements occurred along the Thames at high altitude. Again the RAF took down roughly 10 bombers with others severely damaged and limping home.....
But the docks were hit and 5th Staffel did well protecting their bombers, even if some were a little worse for wear....
As the sun began to set, the last raids headed back to France and the RAF crews landed for some much needed rest and relaxation as they knew it would all be happening again at 6pm on November the 3rd.....
There is sure to be Fireworks!!!

Shots from Mission 3
He111 Bombers second raid of the morning to the Hawker Factory in Kingston upon Thames. Total bomber formation count =54
A few skirmishes with RAF fighters up the Thames, resulting in the loss of 10 bombers...
But the majority hit their target...
A good few scraps between 109's and Hurricanes on the way out....
but this poor fellow was deadstick and heading out into the channel....
The gentlemanly 109 pilot leaves his enemy to try and make it back....
The morning had begun early with Me110 raids into Hornchurch. 151 sqn callsign 'Bearskin' scrambled from North Weald to intercept, shooting down 5 of the 18 enemy aircraft....
Meanwhile a larger raid was heading to the Hawker factory in Brooklands... 36x JU88's with small escort of 109's were hit by members of 151 Sqn in their Hurricanes, 12 enemy aircraft were destroyed...
As the bombers turned for home an incoming raid of 18 JU87's were attacking Kenley Airfield just as Bearskin had rearmed and refuelled... the JU87 and JU88 flight intersecting near Biggin Hill....
This was a costly raid for the Germans with all 18 Stukas shot down....
The final raid of the morning is the one shown above, 54 He111 Bombers flew up the Eastern coast of England and turned into the Thames Estuary to head to Kingston Upon Thames and once more the second Hawker aircraft facility...
The Germans lost 10 aircraft in this raid but hit their target.
A brutal morning of fighting that was completed by 9.30am.... what will November the 10th bring????

I'm afraid I'm going to have move myself to the "fly as available" section. Who knew having a newborn was so busy?
Re: Operation Firestarter - BayS ToD 1 Briefing
Sorry guys, I'm not sure If I will be able to attend anymore of these missions. My CLoD is running like absolute crap and I have no idea why. Having all kinds of problems with it I didn't have in the past.
Re: Operation Firestarter - BayS ToD 1 Briefing
Grunt Hi,
That may have been last nights mission to be fair... again I ramp tested it to the max with Weather and numbers. We had significant cloud with a lot of enemy AI in lots of areas with a lot of bombing going on.... so if it was going to run a tad slow or stuttery... last night was the night.
I think I have learned a couple of useful things and can re-balance for next week.

Re: Operation Firestarter - BayS ToD 1 Briefing
Black dog : brilliant mission last night
Weather effects were good , plenty of bombers to attack in different areas.
Despite there not being as many of us this week , we still managed to take down a shed load of bombers
You doing the flyby at gravesend in your 109 scared the shit out of us , I did latch on to your tail but you was too far in front.
Anyone who hasn’t joined in on these missions on Saturday, I would highly recommend it.

Re: Operation Firestarter - BayS ToD 1 Briefing
Matt hi,
Ha! Thanks for that, I wondered how you guys reacted to that lone 109 bounce at the airfield... I chose specifically not to fire but thought a close enough flyby might get your attention... I think having the odd random bounce from a 109 whilst you guys were focused on the bombers, seemed to add a nice element of surprise and tension.
It was certainly a varied mission and was for me, another opportunity to try a few new things.
Onto Saturday orders......
It has been decided that Operations will be stood down this weekend on the ACG server, to focus everyone into helping TFS test some of their updates. So this Saturday's BayS mission is scratched.
However... it will return the following week with the MOTHER of ALL missions, which follows a similar mission of that time and day... it will be an absolute corker and I highly encourage anyone that is able to put some time aside... do it for Saturday November 24th at 6pm!
