Any insight on how widespread the armour plating or lack thereof was historically?

Anything that's going to PK me from behind is probably going to set me on fire anyway, so I'll probably never use this. I'm sure there are some that will find it handy though, and it fits well in the historical setting so good stuff, I say.

Woudlnt be surprised if it was enforced during our campaign ops, though we would sure have to get some research done beforehand.

Quite simply we need to make person death count. If they don't it'll be because of the stupidity of preferring to ditch in the sea on the off chance of ASR rather than in England and being a POW

Enforcement varied if at all. I certainly read about Macki Steinhoff getting a round into the plate right on his head and upon seeing its location after he landed he wrote a direct order to all of his pilots who had removed it to put it back in. This was 1943.
