Contact spotting in VR

Post by Thaine » Mon Feb 08, 2021 9:50 am

I really enjoy the VR experience in BoX, but one thing that really got worse is my contact spotting. Most often in campaign I feel I'm completely blind. Not only that I spot way after everybody else is spotting contacts, I also regularly loose contact to the dogfight or my wingman during the flight.

I think I was a bit spoiled since before VR, I was playing on a 42 inch fullHD TV where spotting was really easy. But hopefully there's some tricks and tips that can help with this. I would be interested in what settings you use and maybe if somebody that knows more about what factors influence spotting can give some guidance.

I tried several settings but am not satisfied yet. The settings I use are as described here for optimal spotting. (https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/28 ... thdec2020/). I have the HP G2 and run at 100% resolution in the steam VR settings.
Fractal Design Define R6 / Gigabyte Z390 AORUS MASTER / Intel i9-9900K / 32 GB RAM / NVIDIA GeForce GTX2080Ti / WD Black SN750 / Corsair Hydro H100i RGB Platinum / Corsair RM850x / WINDOWS 10 / LG 42LE5300 / TrackIR / HP Reverb G2 / Saitek AV8R-MK3 / Saitek ProFlight Throttle Quadrant / Saitek ProFlight Rudder Paddels / Saitek ProFlight Cessna Trim Wheel

I'am on the G2 Thaine and my spotting is on par with my head tracking now after messing around , i have found after alot of testing that having the AA set to 4 and the DRF set to full it take away all the shimmers , Then i have the steam set to 70% , with this all timings are below 11 m/s during the campaign.

Try MSAA instead of FXAA. It's quite a hit on your FPS, so you will have to dial down other graphics settings. 100% resolution factor in steam is what I'm running too. Verify the settings in quick mission battle with contacts spawning at 10k distance.

Ginge, by DRF you mean the Dynamic Resolution Factor slider in the settings? Also, do you mean MSAA 4x?

Those settings above give 70 / 90 fps in campaign on a 2080ti. With the most important thing frame timings under 11 m/s

Go with Gingers settings, and see. After 3 weeks of tweaking my G2, it is the best I have got. Dont stick with 100% Supersample - Drop it down (to 70% or 50% in SteamVR). BOX on Balanced.
Wont ever be as good as a 4K monitor, but acceptable, and great VR.
I scoured the forums and Youtube, and found happiness closer to home :)

This vid gave good understanding for me: https://youtu.be/1tf0GgPFBFA
Then I went with Gingers recommendations to great effect.

Check also:
Have you set XMP profile for memory (fast mem seem to help a lot)
Have you removed the 'false monitors' using Regedit (shown n Vid above)
Get Steam's fpsVR. It gives great real time info inside you VR environment.

My new fancy rig - (NB! Gingers 3700x and 2080Ti is giving as good results.)
CPU: Intel Core i9-10900KF
GPU: Nvidia RTX 3080
SSD: Samsung 970 Pro NVMe PCIe M.2 1TB
RAM: Corsair CMW16GX4M2C3200C16 4x8GB
MBD: NZXT N7 Z490

Thank's for the tip on frame timings, was completely oblivious to this. I'll have to follow up on it.

Thanks for the tips guys.

GInger posted me his settings already on Discord a week ago and I tried them on the Campaign mission the Sunday before yesterday. I'm not quite sure they were better though. I'll give them another try.
