I seem to be able to ID further than 600m away, much further, but it really depends on the type of aircraft, altitude, time of day etc. Use the zoom when necessary. After a while, ID becomes a matter of muscle memory as you see the planes over and over and memorize silhouettes much like real pilots did when they show you a profile.

I always use zoom, sometimes I can Id without, but I then always check with zoom to be 100% sure.

Maybe try Gingers spotting test mission to check your view distance? I rarely spot enemy in anger at the range presented in this test, at least it shows me that it's possibly in ideal conditions.

Run the mission and pause it when you can make out a discernible silhouette. You can then check the distance using labels.

One thing i've discovered when spotting a plane at long distance. When it moves side on, it can sometimes disappear. But I dont think this is an issue unique to VR?

I belive thats a bug. It happens sometimes when the LOD changes. Affects VR and monitors alike.

I will try that. I used the quick missions so far to improve my graphic setting. I have done that before for my monitor settings without VR.

Two days ago a flew a short mission on the Finnish server but with monitor and it's true, it's way inferior once you started VR from the general impression point of view.

Meanwhile, a different idea is to get rid of the Rift an invest in a Rift S or something like that as Mephisto says it would be another step forward regarding resolution.

I wouldn't get the Rift S honestly but rather look into the HP Reverb G2. It has better resolution and is about the same price as the Rift S.

I second Thaine. HP Reverb G2 seems to be THE headset for 2020 as of now in terms of value for money and highest resolution. Caveat is it is all based on pre-release reviews. In any case it should come out in about 2 weeks and many on the forum here have pre-ordered so you will have many data points to review / check.

I use the Reverb G1 and its great for sitting VR. If the G2 is an improvement on this then it'll be a winner.

TL;DR: Oculus needs a Facebook Account in the near future.
