VVS skinning in progress
Hello all,
I've been fiddling with skins for (3 эск.) 34-й ИАП (No.615 Sqn's VVS rep). I'm basing it on this design: https://imgur.com/Xi22vd0.jpg
Will add stripes later, although I don't know if all a/c in the squadron had them.
and I have a question:
I appear to be doing something wrong when exporting to the .dds file. I use the compression BC3 / DXT5 and the skin comes out a bit rough around the edges. As you see in the image, the stars are kind of pixelated.
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? The skin appears fine when being worked on in gimp, as well as if I reopen the exported file with gimp.
Thanks in advance.

Re: VVS skinning in progress - Question
You have an Alpha layer ? Generate mimap ?
I think the pixel effect is normal. With a 4k skin may be not.
Here is a good link : https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/13 ... with-gimp/

Re: VVS skinning in progress - Question
Thanks for the reply Miki. Yes, I add the alpha layer, and generate mipmap on export.
I'll look into making it in 4k to see what happens. The effect is much less pronounced in-game, but still noticeable.
Thanks again!

Re: VVS skinning in progress - Question
4k will look better, but look at the size ! 2k is the solution if we want to create a fast downloading / HD friendly skin pack...
Re: VVS skinning in progress - Question
Here is the one I made, is the resolution OK? Anything else I need to fix? I'll try and make it with the black tiger lines, but not sure where to find information about that kind of camo.Miki wrote:4k will look better, but look at the size ! 2k is the solution if we want to create a fast downloading / HD friendly skin pack...

Re: VVS skinning in progress - Question
Hey Woop, looking good! My comment, based on my research, is that in Autumn 1941 I can't find any reference photographs for 34 IAP that have a star on the vertical stab. Have you found any? The tiger cammo was for the personal aircraft of one of their aces; I doubt they all had it and more than likely, particularly given the loss rate, most aircraft were the standard green. So unless you really want to I wouldn't spend a lot of time figuring out how to do it.

Re: VVS skinning in progress - Question
I've barely found any of 34 IAP! Just a few of pilots. So it would look more like this, you think? Just the number on the tail?Trystan wrote:Hey Woop, looking good! Made a new version:

Hi
A usefull link : https://massimotessitori.altervista.org ... /mig3.html
If you want to be accurate don't forget that AII green was a little bit darker on wooden surface than on metallic. It's noticeable on the MIG-3.
I made some Mig-3 skins for 501 : viewtopic.php?f=11&t=9482
Of course if you want I can share my work with you Mp me.
