Kanalkampf. Mission 13: 25th July 1940

Kanalkampf. Mission 13

Squadron: No.615 "County of Surrey" Squadron
Squadron code: "KW"
Pilot name: Siddich
Date: 25th July 1940
Time: 1140hrs
Landed: ----
Base: Kenley
Type: Hawker Hurricane Ia
Marking: H for Harry
Serial number: L2025

Synopsis:
After taking of with a "floppy stick", I had problems to stay in formation with No.615 so I flew in a little distance from the main squadron. After forming up with Random I spotted 4 109s in front of the bombers. Random and I split of the formation and, climbed after them. Whilst this dogfight I managed to damage one 109 and shot another one down. Wen trying to climb again, I found a lonely Do 17 flying in flat circles. It was definitely a wounded Dornier - likelly the one, which Archie hit some feet above in the same area. I finished him of and found myself on the tail of another 109, wich I also finished of. He ditched near the cliffs. Because I was following him so close, my propeller touched the water and I went in as well. Suddenly I could only see black. Maybe I've got something with my eyes.
Hope the doctors will fix that.

Claims:
Destroyed: 2 x Bf 109
1/2 x Do 17
Probable: none
Damaged: 1 x Bf109

Pilot: some trouble with my eyes - maybe...
Aircraft: OK, but on the ground of the Channel...

'Panta' squadron took off at the head of the Kenley wing and made course for the Dover sector via Gravesend, Rochester and Canterbury. Soon after getting airborne we were given a vector by ground control and climbed to Angels 10 on a bearing of 120°. When over Dover we spotted some contacts high over Deal which turned out to be hun fighters. I sent off a section to slow them up as I searched for the bombers. We were attacked by Me 109s and had to break. I was flying around trying to evade the 109s when I saw the bombers above me at 6 O'clock. I turned and attacked setting fire to a DO 17 and then I was caught in crossfire. I got a bullet through the leg, but attacked another Do17. I damaged another 2 Do 17s, one of which started to go down. At this point my engine started running rough and I diverted to Hawkinge. I landed safely and was taken to the MO.

Claims
Destroyed: 1 DO 17
Probable: 1 DO 17

Took off as No2 to Hollywood, but had problems with my gear and took a long time to catch up.Jumped by 109s near the bombers, broke and lost Hollywood. Attacked a Do17 which was finished off by Sidditch then got caught up with a 109 inland from Dover, couldn't disengage and after a great 10 minute fight was shot down.

Synopsis:

So I had been in the pub right outside the base since 1900 hrs the previous evening chatting with this lovely girl named Nancy. It was like time had stopped and we were the only ones in the world. She was the one for me!! Nothing else matters!! But then the sound of merlins barking to life snapped me back into reality. Shit!! The mission!! I gotta go!! It was all I could do to run my ass off to the aerodrome, grab my kit and find my trusty crate. "A little late this morning, eh Spud", joked my mechanic, Lewis as I tripped over the chocks and banged my shin as I clambered up the wing. "What's her name this time, Spud"? "Shut up, Lewis!! Lets get this crate started!!" Mags: on. Fuel cock: set. Boost cutout: on. Rads: wide open. "Clear prop!!" The merlin spun over like a charm. At least Lewis is good for something. Unfortunately the rest of 615 was already on the runway. I cut across the field and snuck into position behind S.L. Hawes just in time for the formation takeoff. Hope he didn't notice I was late......

Climbing out towards Dover, we leveled off at Angels 11. Before we got feet wet, we saw 4 contacts at our high 11 o'clock. Damn! 109's. This isn't going to be a milk run. Hawes sent Random and Siddich to go play with them. Then I saw the bombers. 10 plus Do-17 just about feet dry At Angels 10. I called them out but by then we seemed to be in the middle of a furball. A 109 was in our formation and shooting at the Hurrie on my left. I called for him to break and quickly rolled left to give chase. For just a moment the 109 came into my gunsight. I put a quick burst in and got some hits, casing him to break off his attack. I continued my roll and re-aquired the bombers, diving in for a head-on attack. I lined up on the left most bomber and put a burst into the cockpit. Lots of pieces flew off him as I saw him roll left and lost sight of him. I pulled back, rolled left and came in behind the right side of the bombers. I lined up on the right-most DO-17 and put a nice burst into his right engine. The bomber burst into flames, rolled over and went in. I heard another squadron member call to confirm. I just can't remember who. I'll find out at the pub tonight. I pulled up to re-aquire the bombers but instead I climbed right back into the furball. By pure luck, I climbed through it all unscathed. Unfortunately, I lost track of the bombers. I dropped back into the furball to try my luck. There was a 109 coming in behind a brylcremer. I was able to cut the corner and get a burst in. My shot was wide, but it caused him to break off his attack and dive away quickly. That's one more beer that No. 64 owes me......

Then Osprey gets on the radio and calls out another formation of bombers heading in between Dover and Deal. I immediately turn left and head that way. I was at Angels 12 when I saw a flight of bombers line abreast headed for Dover. I called them out and rolled in. The bombers all rolled over and dived so I figured they were Stuka's. They weren't. They were JU-88's. I lined up on one and put a few rounds in his right wing. Not enough to put him down. Damn!! I still had plenty of energy from my dive so I pulled in behind another that was headed in land on the deck. I got a good burst in on him and he started smoking good. I believe it was another 615 member who came in and finished him off. Good Show!! As I broke left to make another pass I took a bunch of hits. I think it was a 109 but I didn't have time to look. I was on the deck, tracers were zipping overhead and my rads were perforated. So I made a hard right break with a rolling reversal left and made a climbing bee-line for Hawkinge. Just as I got the field in sight, the merlin cried uncle and shut down on me. Getting the undercarraige down just in time, I set my crate down in a field about 2 miles NE of Hawkinge. I hopped out and started to walk to the base when I came across a pub and decided to stop in........ And that is where I met Diane.......

Claims:
Destroyed: 1x DO-17 / 1x JU-88 (Shared)
Probable: 1x Do17
Damaged: 1x BF-109 / 1x JU-88
Missed (but sent away running like a little girl): 1x BF-109

Pilot: OK
Aircraft: Needs a new Radiator / few holes in the right aileron.
Yes........ I AM what's wrong with the world today....... Deal with it!!

Kanalkampf. Mission 13

Squadron: No.501 "County of Gloucester" Squadron
Squadron code: "SD"
Pilot name: Robo.
Date: 25th July 1940
Time: 1140hrs
Landed: Hawkinge
Base: Kenley
Type: Hawker Hurricane Ia
Marking: U for Uncle
Serial number: R4105

Synopsis:
Took off as the last machine of the No.501. Magnificient sight of two Hurricane squadrons roaring up
in the air. Mandril squadron climbed to Angels 12, heading 120 towards Dover area. Some high contacts
already shouted out by Panta. Some pilots engaged and intercepted the dive bombers and their escort,
but I found myself being too late, I seen Stukas already diving straight down some 3 miles ahead of
me, then air got filled with smoke and fire from the stuck harbour. I climbed hard to help some
friendlies directly over the docks. At Angels 14, I got into position behind enemy fighter and gave
him a good squirt from 200 yards. Glycol streamed from both wings, I also hit the fuselage, cockpit
and engine area and I believe this 109 got down eventually. I also attacked his leader from long
range, enough to force him break away and dive. I did not follow this pair and I can only claim 1x
damaged E/A for there was no time to observe their fate. I lost sight of the main section and was
only listening to frantic fight over the R/T. I then noticed a dogfight directly below me and dove to
assist. Friendly Hurricane was already in position behind a Bf 109, I only made one pass, scoring
hits on the engine and port wing. I got too close and almost collided with him at which point I better stayed
n the area and covered the friendly engaging this E/A till it got down.
I confirm 1 x E/A destroyed for Sgt. Fang. The plane crashed 4 miles inland of Dover. Sgt
Fang reported 'rtb' as he got damaged, too. I then climbed rather hard towards Canterbury, where some fights
were reported at Angels 14. After several minutes I have seen no enemy activity and the claims proved
to be wrong and I found myself away from any fighting. I then tried to return to Deal and Dover area
where 109s have been reported, but I happened to be coming too late to any engagement. I then climbed
back towards Deal and got eyes on a formation of enemy bombers and one single fighter coming from the
Manston area. This turned out to be a friendly Hurricane flown by Flight Sgt. Sabre. We engaged the
group of 5 Do 17s over Deal, they turned back immediately, so we gave a chase almost mid Channel. I
confirm 3x Do 17 destroyed by F./Sgt Sabre, while I destroyed the remaining two. All 5 crashed into
sea. We then RTB'd to Hawkinge and landed safely. There was no enemy activity at all, underneath us,
some Spitfires were returning from French side of the Channel.

Claims:
Destroyed: 2 x Do 17
Damaged: 1 x Bf 109

Pilot: OK
Aircraft: OK

I arranged for AVM Park to fly in to see five-oh-one today because we've been right on the front line since France and needed a pick up. The Spitfire chaps and six-one-five were a bit put out by this though especially as the officers mess was closed off after some special attention from a stray Jerry bomber yesterday leaving them to witness the special attention being lavished on them. He naturally arrived in his personal Hurricane which put further wind up the Spitfire boys in the Wing and a few remarks were said out of the AVM's earshot. AVM Park left with a "Very good, very good, keep handing it to Jerry, carry on Wing Commander" before roaring off. The next minute a fierce argument had broken out between F/Sgt Sabre and one of the foreign chaps, Cpl Redeye. F/O Teepee had stepped in after P/O Meaker pulled F/Sgt Sabre away from the Norwegian before he could swing a punch. I had heard "What? I'll break your fucking nose!" before a scuffle and pile of bodies and shouting. "What the devil is going on?" I shouted. "Flying Officer, sort this mess out and I want these two in my office now" before I briskly walked off. "Yes sir" said my second. That was that, another 'fizzer' as the men call it. The upshot of it was that the comments became stronger and Redeye had said something offensive in Norweigen but had not accounted for Sabre, a north eastern chap, who used similar words to the Vikings of old and he'd been understood. I couldn't afford the loss of good pilots so ordered them to organise an inter-squadron sporting event together which did not involve fighting, or face proper punishment. "Get back to your flights and I don't want to see you in here again, dismissed".

We were at readiness when the Station Commander, Squadron Leader Hawkins, came poking his nose in about the incident and wanting to go through "official channels". A real pen pusher this chap and I didn't like him. I told him so and told him that he'd do well under Hitler, which he took offence too naturally. So off the Hurricanes went after trade was on it's way from France, 20 Hurricanes thundering down the concrete of Kenley and out over Croydon. I decided to show off and took the Hurricanes on a flypast to beat up Kenley right under the S/L's nose to show my contempt, I was still fuming, and just to show the Spitfires lining up that the Hurricane was a proper fighting machine. Passing a few feet above their heads we went at 270mph, PO Meaker reported that he saw S/L Hawkins fall on his backside!

"Mandrel, head 120 degrees, climb to 8000ft to Dover". That was it, Jerry was at Dover again and up to his old tricks. "Roger Tophat, on our way". I changed channel and reported to the Wing "Let's make it 12,000 feet, TopHat aren't always right". When we arrived at Dover the sky was black with aircraft, I ordered a fast climb to the Dormiers which No.615 were already into, and the Huns were up high, screaming into us. When the fighting opened up in came the Spitfires and all hell let lose. After brushing off one attack I chased the bombers inland with PO Meaker just ahead of me to two O'Clock. I was very aware that we could be jumped but glancing around we were clear. Then suddenly a Jerry fighter overtook my starboard, he was no more than 20 yards and heading for PO Meaker "Break break break Red three" I shouted as the bandit fired, Meaker spun but I'd saved his life, he was unharmed. "I could've easily bought it myself" I thought out loud, it brought home the dangers we were facing. I then got onto a lone Hun, diving in at Dover, I gave chase and screamed downhill, at 385mph on the indicator he pulled up and I put in all my strength to follow, then I caught him, a good squirt into his cowling and fluids poured out, it looked like oil, as I eased past his peak of climb. Diving down again I continued to chase the slippery fellow "Hold on Fritz, not so fast" I muttered as I pressed the Dunlop button once more and the bullets struck home into his cooling system. I broke away and Fenris jumped in to finish him off. He went into the drink, I claim this 109 as shared destroyed.
I turned out to sea at 8000ft because Meaker had been trailing a German seaplane over a convoy and remembering the directive that Jerry had been chaeting again and using red cross as spotters I ordered "Shoot him down Red three", "Winchester Red leader". I went for him myself and just as I was 500 yards to his port and closing fast I heard loud bangs, the rushing of air and a searing pain in my left arm. I thought I was crying but touching my face it was blood! I'd been struck in the canopy. I checked my machine and she responded well so I dived for Hawkinge and put in a reasonable landing. An ambulance came out immediatly where I was given 'special attention' from a pretty field nurse called Diane. After some 'treatment' she had heard of an american pilot had also pancaked and rushed off to perform some 'triage' quickly, saying she may get some nylons thrown in if she plays her cards right. Energetic girl.

Lifted off from Kenley on our 'fearless leaders' ( Red flight ) 19 o'clock. Headed out on a 120 ° heading , but I had to check with flight lead as there was a 30 ° difference on my compass compared to his. Made a correction on my compass and continued on. Got to the coast and turned to port to travel up the coast to Dover. Enemy aircraft were sighted and engaged. I stayed high and picked up a 109 and got off a quick burst but couldn't re-acquire. Five minutes later I spied another ( same one ? ) 109 and as he crossed in front of me ( from high 2 to low 8 ) I pushed the button and got some hits , but then again I couldn't re-acquire.
The action was starting to break up , so I lingered mid channel to wait for and cover F L and others returning from the French coast. Spotted a D 17 low and intermittent black smoke coming from his port engine. Down I dropped to finish him off. Slid in behind him and just as I was about to fire , black smoke belched from his port engine . I couldn't see a thing , yanked back on the stick but it was to late. Popped the top, hit the release ................ last thing I saw was water coming at me.........until now. Some bloke is trying to drown me with whiskey !!!! As it turns out I must have been flung out of the cockpit almost into their laps ( some fishermen that is ). They'd fished me out almost immediately. I was out cold , but the whiskey brought me around , but I ache all over and have a gash on my head. Four hours to Dover and they spilt most of the whiskey.
