Back from leave I took off at the head of Red section with F/O Random as Blue leader and F/O Siddich as Yellow leader. I've been hammering away at HQ for more spares and new kites. I decided to bypass the usual channels and it seems to have paid off. 'Panta' was at full strength today and we put up 11 kites with 1 A/C unservicable just before T/O.

After the scramble we climbed hard to Angles 14 on a rough vector of 260°. I had Blue section on my right with Yellow section slightly higher and at my 5 O'clock. We flew over the Isle of Wight and heard from the other squadrons that the Hun had been sighted just to the W of our position.
When we finally came up with the E/A we were behind them and were being threatened by snappers. I encouraged the chaps to make it to the bombers but Blue and Yellow section were quickly bounced by 109s and had to defend themselves.
I led Red 2 and 3 towards the bombers and made one quick pass on a smoking bomber, I believe it was a JU88. He started losing height so I left him. Red 2 (Coyote) stuck to me well for a new chap, so I led him on another attack on the main bomber force. I made two quick attacks and got another bomber smoking before I was hit in the engine and cockpit. My engine was smoking and I had oil all over the windscreen.

I turned towards Southhampton in order to find a safe place to put down when I suddenly saw tracers going past me and a massive crash in the fuselage and then I.....

Squadron: No.501 "County of Gloucester" Squadron
Squadron code: SD
Pilot name: Robo.
Date: 11th of August, 1940
Base: Tangmere
Type: Hawker Hurricane I
Marking: "U for Uncle"
Serial number: N3822

Synopsis:
Take-off from Tangmere as Gold Leader with Mauf as my wingman. Excellent pilot all in all, I shall request to fly with him as a pair more often, I am sure W./Cdr. wouldn't mind. We came over a massive bomber formation as the last pair and spotted snappers above us, I decided to stay up high and engage them rather than the bombers. I reported 109s already dropping on the fist sections of Mandril squadron. Spitfires were in place this time and attacked the 109s with altitude advantage. Lovely large scale aerial battle started. We got engaged with multiple 109s at angels 15 up to 22, trying to find the rest of the group and the bombers. Unfortunately, despite long effort, we never managed to engage any of the raiders. I engaged 109 from 6 o'clock, multiple hits causing coolant, fuel and oil leak, 109 rolled over lazily and dove clumsily down, we did not follow, I claim it as probable. I also scored multiple hits (1,5 sec burst) into another 109 that also escaped damaged, with popped radiators . I hit port wing, and aft cockpit fuselage. I confirm one 109 damaged by Mauf and another probable - he caught him after it slipped between us and tried to attack me. I dodged the attack in last moment and then watched Mauf climbing on this 109 and scoring good hits causing massive stream of glycol.

After a while, any contacts we spotted appeared to be friendly, Luftwaffe got smashed again, I wonder when they get the message and stop sending their silly little planes with silly little crosses over the Blighty. We got a call from Flick that he was dragging multiple enemy a/c towards IoW, we dove in the area he described, but we spotted no contacts. He had to ditch eventually, luckily survived for I would never forgive myself for failing to locate him and help. We spotted 3 enemy planes disengaging from the area, we decided not to pursue them and returned to base together.

Synopsis

Jesus Christ! No sooner had we landed then we were being briefed and back into our kites! I swear my seat was still warm from when I'd last vacated it - either that or Nigsy had been kipping in the cockpits again. I have to say, I felt a bit rum, partly due to that scoundrel Teepee spiking my drinks again - and partly because a full english and rum for breakfast really don't mix all that well. I swear I have no idea how he does it, but I'd be damned if I could hit the ball straight during our billiards play-off in the mess. My wallet felt a few shilling short of a pound to boot - but in fairness I probably owed him for the rum he'd slipped into my pint pot, so it'd all work out fair in the end.

The call came - lots of hun heading for Portsmouth - the Navy was the target. Those poor buggers were really getting it these days, but Bunny and his bellyful of dutch courage was ready to windmill at a few of them - the rotters. I flew as Green Leader, with Sgt Flick as Green 2. Airbourne and on our way, tit pulled and we climbed like those new fangled jet things I'd heard about. Unfortunately for Flick, I noticed he was trailing water as we climbed - he confirmed he must have popped his radiator, the CO order him back to base to get a new aircraft. He was going to miss the fun at this rate. I took up position as Osprey's third man, rather than go it alone, and a few minutes later we spotted the dirty hun, in their dirty aircraft, south-west of The Needles. We had height on them - I sped in at full throttle, doing 260, and landed some lead into the rump of the first Ju88 entering my sights. Looking over my shoulder I could make out white trails from both engines - I claim this probable. I pulled up, looped high over them and started to descend on them. My machine started to splutter - either that or I was spluttering - probably the hangover kicking in! First I saw the next target in front of me, then he was instantly behind me! I was having mini blackouts - I made a mental note to ask Teepee to swap rum for something else next time he tampered with my drinks - this was not good! I climbed and rolled again for a third pass, another blackout and when I came round I noticed my oil pump had failed. I'd been hit whilst unconscious - how's that for bad form! I squeezed a few off at the rapidly receding bombers, then dropped the nose before I stalled. I could see The Needles not too far to my 3 o'clock, so decided to head for Sandown, and see how far I could glide.

It turned out to not be far enough. I ended up ditching in a ploughed field a few miles to the west of Sandown. I could make out another Hurricane who'd managed to glide further than I had. I put a shout out for a pickup, with my location, and Teepee's voice came back - "Make that two one-way returns to Tangmere needed - I just passed over your sorry excuse for a plane!". Bloody excellent - from where I sat in that field, next to my trusty crate, I could just make out a small village pub - "Dog and Duck" - must be near Wroxall! I'm sure they have a snooker table! I radiod Teepee, telling him my pile of half crowns were on the snooker table, and his pint was getting cold, so he'd best hurry.

After a few beers, the crew bus pulled up and took us back to Tangmere. Quite a jolly really - we met up with the rest in the mess. I bumped into a rather pert WRNS and, knowing the old scoundrel Teepee's penchant for girls who are used to a steady swell and aren't put off by a constant rocking motion, I slipped her a small caddy of absinthe, mentioning Teepee's liking for a mixer or two in his red. That should even the score!

I took off as Blue two with Luke as Blue leader and Maltloaf as Blue 3. We climbed west towards the Isle of Wight to above angle 20. West of the Isle of Wight we made contact with three bomber groups lower and their escorts at the same level and went into attack. I followed Blue leader into some circles. Luke shot one 109, which went down trailing bright white clouds of glycol. Another 109 went tried to get into position of Blue leader. I followed this hun in his long six. He went bag for France at first but turned back to the Isle of Wight in a long circle. Maltloaf joined the pursuit and the 109 turned back towards France. We abandoned the attack and turned back. By this time the fighting had seized. I mad a final attempt on two returning bombers but broke of due to my position being disadvantageous. I returned to Tangmere.

Ah Tangmere again, because of the distance from France we should get a fair warning of the Hun showing up.The boss was on the warpath something to do with the paperwork-so it was tin hats on and make yourself scarce.
I was flying With blue section with Random as blue leader,Biggles 2,Baron 3 and me 4.
Panta took off and headed to the west of the Isle of White, Squadron leader Hawes brought us in right on the button 2/3groups of Ju88's and plenty of snappers high.i chose the second group as my target i dived in but was bounced by a 109,i pulled a tight turn to port and he flashed past going downhill at a fair rate of knots.re-aquiring the bombers i made for the far left element,i got hits on a Ju88 [both engines trailing black smoke]and started to pull away when bang---it all went black--Hunny oakly strikes again damnit.
