Synopsis
Once again we were sent down at first light to support Sector A. After the briefing and in the mess some of the chaps had a discussion about it all and I was livid, "They are yellow" I said. S/L Gromic replied "I agree, I've heard stories about 'engine trouble' many times, the pilots complaining about the 'sea air'". "Poppycock" said S/L Hawes as he lit his pipe and laid back in the leather seat, "Poppycock is what it is. We are always out over the drink against the bosh and we've not had such trouble. I asked F/Sgt Jones about this very thing last week and he said that the only thing that can stop a Merlin is a Jerry cannon shell, and they aren't going to put one into me". Mumbles of agreement could be heard amongst the sound of Meaker on the piano and crack of snooker balls, Teepee was having a few frames with Bunny. "Another foul, 4 points" he exclaimed. "Didn't bloody touch it" said Bunny who appeared to have had a few too many, "That's the problem Bunny old chum, you missed the cue ball again". "Not on your nelly" Bunny slurred before he stumbled over and slumped over asleep and stone drunk knocking the reds everywhere. "Thank you, this ought to cover it" said Teepee as he took half a crown from Bunnys wallet. Well it wasn't the first time we've seen Bunny in this way, Teepee has a knack of getting a set of frames going before pouring gin into his opponent, and Bunny is often the victim.

So here we were down at Tangmere and the dispersal hut sargeant had tuned into the R/T chatter of the boys in our normal sector. It was only 0830hrs and Jerry was raiding Dover again, he was high and from what we could gather our chaps were giving him a black eye over there. "Damn and blast, that would've been us!" erupted Donkey, one of the new chaps. "Steady old boy, I know you're keen but you can't have had more than 8 hours on the Hurricane right?" said P/O Random "Well, the longer you stay out of things the less dead you'll be chum. We'll do our best but it's mayhem up there". "Thaen ve vill teesch you houw to keel de jurmain" said P/O Robo, our Czech ace who we could not really control in the air.

At 1030 hrs the telephone rang, everything fell silent, "Scramble Kenley scramble" came the cry. Merlins fired and before long 30 Merlins burst into the blue. "Where to control?" I asked, "150 plus bearing 340 at angels 16. I'm afraid that's rather a lot of them Mandrel". "Bloody hell lads, there's nearly 200 of the bastards this time". We were only 3 squadrons, it was going to be a tough one. "Stick tight to me red two" I said as I led the chaps out over the Solent.

The Spitfires got away first followed by 501 and 615 squadrons. We were only at angels 16 when contact was first made, 30+ to our port and below us, I turned about and cries of "Tally Ho" came over the R/T. The escort was light and Mandrel took advantage, "Gunsight to Ju88" I called as I screamed downhill at over 300mph right into their portside and heaving on the stick to get into a firing position on one of the invading vermin. I opened up with a volley of British lead from 250 yards right into his side, I could see the bullets strike into the cockpit area which is like a greenhouse on this design. I witnessed the Fritz gunner stop firing and slump over his gun in the back whilst black oil and smoke belched from his port engine. As I overtook I said to myself in satisfaction "You're number is up Goering you clot" and I looked over my shoulder I could see the bosh opening hatches, their arms waving about in furious activity as they looked at the dice and realised they'd been rolled snake eyes for this trip. Their beastly machine wheeled to starboard and pulled away from the main pack of rats before starting a deadly fall, then I witnessed the rotters jumping from their ill-fated crate as it steepened it's descent into the sea. I claim this Ju88 as destroyed. I turned about for another try at Goering's henchmen, the more jackbooted rascals I could put out of the war the better as my magnificent Hurricane, a wonder of engineering, hauled about into position again with aplomb. It was then I called to the squadron that 109 scoundrels were diving in to try and save their countrymen, but steely eyed I focussed on another Jerry trolley anyway, despite the danger just like any brave Gloucester would do and pushed my Dunlop button fully. To my disappointment I had missed the Hun harbinger cleanly and bashed my control panel in fury, then I checked over my shoulder to see one of the vermin closing me fast. Naturally the boffins at Hawker knew what the German was like and had built in safeguards so it was easy for me to break away gracefully and leave him struggling like swimming hound. It was then I noticed a pair of 109's trying to jump onto a Hurricane below, again the Hawker marvel machine displayed its class, toying with the pointless volley of cannon shells from the squareheaded pram. I was in perfect position to catch him on his apex and did so, catching the hound in a right hand turn, he displayed his full topside to me and I let him have it from 150 yards. His machine rocked as British made rounds struck home and caused fatal problems signified by coolant pouring from the Daimler-Benz powered rat. He was done for and would certainly not make it the 100 miles back home like that but I didn't want to lose height and needed to get back to the main attack headed for the rowers at Swanage. I claim this Me109 as probable. I caught up with them over the target, our boys on the flak firing furiously at the enemy. There I joined 2 other Hurricane and we beamed in to the enemy once more, but the 109 I had picked was too fast I could only shoot from 300 yards. I scores some hits but he was flyable so I can only claim him as damaged. I then fashioned onto a pair of Heinkels whom I'd carefully singled out for a British welcome but a sneaky Jerry had other ideas as I heard loud bangs on my machine and rocked hard to starboard. I looked at the wing and saw a couple of large holes in the wing so decided to bolt back to Tangmere pronto. My machine lost some speed but I managed to trim her nicely and put in a perfect 3 point landing back on the base, then put faithful TB-P in for some patching up. It was there I met some of the other chaps who had already got back and we had a talk about Jerry's latest tricks.

Synopsis: Launched with No. 64 Squadron as wingman for FO Vranac as White Two - engaged e/a fighters without noticeable results - engaged e/a bombers with hits on the first one whose port wing caught fire - the second e/a bomber was venting and smoke coming from the port wing with possible damage to a third - I was attacked by an e/a single engine - injured and crash landed south west of the needles.

Me and Tyrone engaged 4 109's, i scrached the paint of one of them and flamed another one, i was myself shot down a few seconds later.

Synopsis:
Took off from Tangmere as Yellow 2 after a good 20 to 30 minutes waiting for the scramble order. As a novice pilot I followed Yellow leader up amd stuck to his tail to the best of my ability.
When we finally engaged I had two passes at some JU88s. I believe I scored some hits on the first pass, and got bounced by a 109 on the second pass - which lead me to unintentionally ram the 88 I was targeting. This caused my port wing to tear off, leaving me with no choice but to eject over the sea about a mile off the coast.

Synopsis:
Lost Flt Cdr on first contact and had one v ones with a couple of BF109s and exchanged blows but without damage to either side (again). Eventually spotted 2 x He111s egressing 15mls SW on Needles Point at 15k, no escorts. Took several passes and left both crippled, venting badly and heading for the drink (10.15hrs).

Synopsis:
Take-off from Tangmere as Gold 2 with Robo as Gold Leader. Followed him to interception area where we engaged 109s escorting bomber formations. Followed Gold Leader in several engagements, staying with him mostly above 15k. Managed to get shots into two 109s. One started streaming, diving away (the probable), got hits on second in high deflection shot but nothing critical by looks (damaged). In those fights, I saw Gold Leader get hits on at least two targets, both streaming and running away. Continued patrolling the area south of the isle of Wight with Gold Leader, trying to rush to the aid of Flick but weren't able to find him. We had to RTB after that due to fuel running low and landed back at Tangmere.
