Squadron: No.64
Squadron Code: SH
Pilot Name: Gromic
Call sign: Red 1
Date: August 12
Base: RAF Kenley
Type: Spitfire 1a 100oct
Marking: Q - Quebec
Serial Number:

Shot 1 Me 109 that was sixing SH-L (Raptor) and count this as damaged. SH-L was cleared. Engaged 2 high 109s, feet wet north of RAF Manston and damaged one. His wingman shot off my tailwheel (which I later discovered on landing at RAF Kenley).

Engaged massive formation of Stukas enroute towards unknown convoy - numerous times from different directions damaging at least 2 and causing another 2 to drop out of formation billowing smoke (probable). 15 Minutes later engaged the rear most 109 of a 6 group flight 10 miles east of RAF Manston at angels 1,500 as they were heading towards france. Opened up hard on this one until my guns went wincester at which point I pulled the tit and vectored towards RAF Gravesend. No use in sticking around next to a stired up hornets nest with empty guns. Orbiting RAF Gravesend I picked up two more 64 Spitfires and proceeded to land at RAF Kenley 15 minutes later.

Claims:
Destroyed:
Probable: 2x Ju 87
Damaged: 2 x Ju 87 / 2x Me 109
Losses: Nosed over on final stop at RAF Kenley. A/C will require engine shock loading and replacement of rudder section.

Synopsis: Birthday flight! We started up in Gravesend in Blue flight, with Teepee & Meaker. Once taking off we climbed to angels 14 & headed towards the ships. We got word from the RDR that fighters were off around Ramsgate. Blue group intercepted a group of 109's at FL220 con trailing. Once the 109's broke & dived down we decided not to engage and head over to the Stuka's north of Ramsgate at angels 3. Once over the 87's we dived down & engage. As I peppered one Ju87 I broke & climbed again to dive down on another Ju87. Once behind a Ju87 I get him steaming, he broke from the formation & started diving down to the water. At that point I heard Meaker & Teepee scream at me to break, I pulled up in a tight right handed turn. I saw the flash from the 109's cannon but he missed completely. Once I shook him off my tail I found another 109 on the tail of a Hurricane. I peppered the 109 and he broke in a hard right hand turn, that is when I out turned his ass and peppered him again, he began to stream. I kept following the 109 down to Ramsgate right over the rooftop of the houses. I let a good 3 sec. burst into him and he caught fire instantly and went down over the channel into the drink. After fighting more over the harbor at Ramsgate, Osprey and myself found each other and headed off to save the other damaged Hurricanes coming in back to land. We met up with Robo and headed toward France. Once mid channel we found a group of 109's low. Following Osprey, we pounced onto a 109. Osprey got him streaming and broke, I continued to stay on the Bf109 peppering him up good, and I then had another 109 pounce onto me. I shook him off and was winchester, so I headed back to England. Once over Manston, Osprey, Robo, and myself formed up and headed back to Gravesend. With three great landings and multiple kills we all headed off to the pub for beer and loose women!

Pilot name: Maltloaf
Date: 12th August 1940
Base: Kenley
Type: Spitfire Ia
Marking: Ink

Synopsis:
Headed for Thames estuary at 10k. Unsurprisingly we were bounce from above as the 109s curved around behind us from above with lots of smash. As rear right tail end Charlie I called alarmed and Blue 1 called break right. In the melee
I ended up wing to Tyrone chasing a 109 to 20k. He got a good burst in and the hun dropped like a stone for the deck venting. We did not follow. Further scraps followed but no coconut I am afraid. I eventually swung in behind the Ju87s as they egressed over Manston but 109s were escorting in force from above. Three of them chased me around for a while before they got bored or low on fuel and I lost touch with them.

I found Blue 1 waiting for me at 6k and as we were both low on fuel we headed for home. The Sqn Ldr joined up from the north and we all headed for Kenlow on fumes.

Squadron: No. 615 "County of Surrey" Squadron
Squadron Code: KW
Pilot Name: Donkey
Date: 12 Aug 1940
Base: Kenley
Type: Hawker Hurricane 1 100 Oct
Marking: P

Synopsis: Launched with Blue Flight as Blue 2, managed to form up with the other blue chaps and spent a while climbing and scanning whilst 615 collectively tried to get our act together and meet up following a chaotic scramble. Followed the flight out over Deal and Manston at about 12,000 feet before coming upon an enormous double-V of JU-87s. Engaged from above and to their 7 o'clock, making three passes and getting a couple of hits on a few of them - no real damage though. Followed them down on their attack on the convoy, and in the confusion found myself low and alone with a single streaming 87 that was flying south towards Blighty and the glorious Kent countryside. Managed to get a couple of good squirts into him, putting him into a steep dive. Overshot on my last pass and by the time I had swung round he was nowhere to be seen, so I can only assume he was either a bloody foxy bugger and managed to hide, or fish food. Whichever it was he was dead either way - there was no way he would limp back to France with that many holes and spewing that much smoke. Put the bus down at Ramsgate as things were rattling a bit and I was out of rounds.

Squadron: No.501 "County of Gloucester" Squadron
Squadron code: SD
Pilot name: Mauf
Date: 12th of August, 1940
Base: Gravesend
Type: Hawker Hurricane I
Marking: "U for Uncle"
Serial number: N3822

Synopsis:
Take-off from Gravesend as Gold leader with Mauf. Got engaged with a high flying pair of 109s above the main scrap just E of North Foreland, the pair was unfortunately aware of use and use their speed to extend further E almost mid-Channel. With no opportunity to break away, we got trapped in a stale mate fight with little purpose. We did not help the main group and we did not manage to pose a threat to this pair of 109s as they kept their game very straight. Luckily, and perhaps this is just the sour grape statement, we did not allow them to shoot down any of our colleagues below them. This pair was obviously very experienced and could cause a lot of damage from their position above the main RAF group. My wingman got hit eventually and had to disengage back towards Manston area. I followed him very shortly, locating him just after he got engaged again. I dove in to try to help him, but that was not necessary. He reported bailing out very close to the coast and got rescued by British ASR. I would never forgive myself losing him and I do blame myself for getting us engaged like this. After short dogfight with a pair of low flying 109s, I got into position behind one and scored multiple hits in the fuselage and port wing. The e/a flipped around and fell of the sky in a wild spin, recovering too late and ditching some 2 miles off the coast. I hope the pilot got rescued just like my poor wingman. Soon after this event I watched a Hurricane chasing a 109 right in front of my nose. I gave the leading aircraft a long burst and scored some hits all over the port side of the fuselage. I claim this one as damaged, I watched the Hurricane whizz right past me and closing in at this 109, then another 109 dove on the attacker, break break, Hurricane heard me so it must have been one of ours from Mandril squadron. I closed in on the climbing 109 and catched him in the climb right before he managed to extend in a dive. 2 second burst got both his radiators streaming, I did not follow this e/a as he left the area rather quickly, I assume he did not make it all the way home and claim it as probable. He got a good beating at least and will think twice next time he decides to push his luck over Britain. I got engaged myself shortly after, and evaded in a tight right hand turn. I joined formation with Osprey and Toxic and returned to base in a vic formation. I miss my wingman, I owe him at least 100 pints for what I got him into.
