Synopsis:

Panta Sqn received the order to take off and form a patrol over a large convoy in the area of AW28. The Sqn had some initial difficulties forming for take off and on the outward leg, however this corrected we proceeded on a course to the Manston Bay area at a height of 14,000 feet.

Contact was made with an En fighter Sqn composed of Bf109s over the sea in the area of AY26 We tried to break contact, as our main target was a bomber formation believed to be heading for the convoy.

Panta Red 2 sighted the En bomber formation to the north of or position in the area of AW27 and tally ho was given by the Sqn Leader. The hostile raid was composed of JU87’s with several Bf109s orbiting the formation.

Panta Sqn closed the gap and attacked forthwith. I caught site of a Bf109 flying straight and level trying to enter the combat zone. He was well ahead but judging his flight path I gathered he hadn’t seen me. I closed as quickly as possible however the En pilot sighted me and took evasive action. I got in a burst and saw a couple of strikes but not enough to cause significant damage to his airframe. He turned on a heading of 090 degrees and extended away. I gave chase and fired a couple of long distance busts without effect.

Realising that further pursuit was futile, I reversed my course and closed with the retreating bomber formation. I dropped below the rear starboard Vic to avoid the savage crossfire and closed to within 100 yards of the right hand JU87. I pulled the nose up and fired a 2 second burst and observed strikes around the rear fuselage and tail area before breaking hard to the right.

I pulled the aircraft into a tight turn and made a second pass at the formation from underneath. I selected an isolated machine and popped up from beneath his tail at a range of 100 yards. I fired 2x 3-second bursts and observed good strikes across the En wing roots and fuselage. The En A/C immediately began to vent coolant and oil.

With my ammunition about exhausted I signalled Red leader with my intention of returning to base and extended away in a dive. I set a course back to Kenley when several tracers passed to my left hand side. A BF109 had crept up on me whilst I was distracted and now the game was afoot!

I made several hard turns to bleed his energy however the pilot knew his stuff and refused a fight on my terms. After several tense moments he must have realised that this duel was going to be protracted and was using up his precious fuel reserves. He broke off and began to extend away to France.

I was mightily relived by this having no ammunition and my own fuel reserve was running quite low. I plotted a course back to Kenley and landed without further incident.

Another very lesson learned today. Never get distracted with menial tasks until you are sure the sky is clear!

Synopsis:

So last night I got into a very heated discussion with some of the boys in the parachute rigging shop about the merits of driving on the "proper" (meaning... right hand) side of the road as we do in the States as opposed to the wrong side of the road which is done here in England. At the conclusion of this argument I was convinced that although the boys seemed a bit perturbed with me, they saw that I was, of course, correct. I then went off to my quarters to retire for the evening.

The next morning after breakfast I went down to the flight line and completed my pre-flight. Everything looked to be in working order so I headed over to dispersal to meet up with the chaps and get a mission briefing. Sqd Ldr Hawes gave out flight assignments and assigned me to fly as Red 3. I went to retrieve my flying kit and swung by the parachute shop for a new chute as mine was due for inspection and re-packing. There were a few dirty looks from the riggers as I exchanged my chute but I attributed that to the previous evenings discussion. "Here. Take this one, Spud." one of the riggers said as he handed me my replacement chute. I smiled, thanked him and was on my way. "Those guys aren't so bad," I thought to myself as I walked to my crate. "They just needed a little re-education".

Out on the flight line, things pretty much went to shit. The planes all started and warmed up without a hitch but it took forever and a half to get lined up and organized on the runway. After what seemed like a week and with a few words of encouragement from the old man, we were off. Taking off as Red 3, I was right behind Sqd Ldr Hawes and slipping into position. Then there were a couple lags and a big zoom on my machine and everyone was gone. Figuring they would appear again shortly, I turned right to the briefed heading of 100 degrees and continued my climb to angels 12 at 5 lbs boost and 2700 rpm. The rest of the flight never showed..... Looking for them in vain, I heard them calling out 2 multi-engine contacts at a long 12 o'clock. Osprey got on the R/T and said we needed to intercept and shoot down the bastards. I went to full boost and quickly Intercepted 2 "Enemy Wellingtons". I waved my wings at them and went on my way. As I passed along side of the bombers, the rest of the flight saw me. A quick look around and 615 had re-appeared. I found Red 1 and joined up with him. The rest of the flights were a bit scattered as well. After re-joining, we made for Manston at Angels 14. Sqd Ldr Hawes started to experience some engine trouble so I took over lead of Red Flight. Approaching Manston, we lost the radar plot on bombers. There were 109's on our far 9 and 11 o'clock that appeared to be engaged. Since our goal was to take out the bombers we tried to re-form over Deal at 15,000 ft. Then Biggles in Red 2 spotted some 109's. I had no joy so I told him to take the lead. After a very brief dogfight we were clear of the fighters. Baron then called out a visual on the bomber formation from his position over Manston. Biggles and I quickly headed that way and soon we saw them. We called out their position; 50 plus enemy aircraft at Angels 10.5, feet wet north of Manston headed west towards the ships. Enemy fighter cover was clear so we headed in and attacked the right side of the flight. I got one streaming on the first pass, Biggles finished him off. (1 shared) I Looped over and attacked again. Attacking from underneath, I got one more streaming black smoke and vapor. I climbed through the bomber flight and took a light hit in the fuel tank causing a tiny leak. With no other damage, I looped over again, attacked the rear element from below and got another one streaming thick black smoke. The Stukas then dove on the ships. I followed. A large furball ensued on the deck. Just after I got one more streaming, a Stuka came in from my right and collided with me, taking off a large portion of my right wing. Since I watched him go down in a fireball, I'm claiming him destroyed. (a kill is a kill.... right???)

Unfortunately I just couldn't keep my kite right side up so it was time to get out. I flung open the canopy and hopped out the side. Clear of the airframe, I gave the ripcord a hearty tug......... nothing happened. One more try........ no dice. Finally I pulled with all my might. The cover ripped open and out sailed 3 bedsheets and a tablecloth. Something got caught on my face. I pulled it away only to find it was a pair of knickers with the name "Yvette" embroidered on them. Wow.... She really does get around. As I plummeted to earth my last thought was........ Never piss off the Parachute Riggers......

well after a month away from my kite i finally climbed back in the cockpit and god was it good to be back after refreshing myself with the controls we all lined up on the runway, this flight i was yellow 2 after scrambling there was a bit of confusion as every one got mixed up in there groups. We headed to the coast. There was a massive fur ball over the channel which i flew towards when i 109 flew right in front of me, i chased him and put a few rounds in him he then stalled and dropped down,he did regain control but i lost sight of him seconds later he was on my 6 shooting at me but luckily enough i got away. After realising ju87s were bombing the ships i headed over there.I managed to shoot a ju 87 which started venting and he dropped out of his formation after being hit a few times and running out of ammo i headed back to base. The landing at the air base was a bit rough i hit the floor hard and put my baby on its roof.

Synopsis
After an eventful day yesterday the morning of the 12th was no different, Jerry finally went for the RDF stations. It appears that their boffins had finally figured out what they were, or at least got the message into the thick skull of that fat clot Goering about how important they are. This morning they were struck in 5 sites by low level specialist raids. I looked out of the watch tower, one hand in my pocket and pipe in the other standing next to PO Robo, one of our foreign pilots. The sound of Merlin was coming from the east and soon the delightful sight of 4 Hurricanes, scrambled to Dunkirk Chain Home site not 40 miles away, were returning from their patrol. No.501 have been moved out to Gravesend, we're not yet sure of the permanence of this move but it is a nice little airfield away from the hustle and bustle of Kenley. I had scrambled a flight this morning because of the raids being reported, British initiative, they were sure to go for Dunkirk too and I didn't fancy us to be blind. "What can you see Pilot Officer?", "Nyot cleeur yvet Sir" came the accented reply "Have they fired guns?", "No Sir, defeeneetlee nyot". Damn and blast, no guns means no contact. And so we watched Teepee, Meaker, Bully and Bonkin all touch down on 3 points perfectly, Nigsy had broken free of his leash, clever dog could recognise Bonkin's crate and Sgt Parker was sprinting across the strip after him. Parker knew he could be in hot water for letting Nigsy out if anything happened. "Sgt Thaine", "Yes Sir", "call those chaps into my office for a quick debrief and then let them off to the NAAFI. I'm expecting more action today". So it turned out that Jerry out-smarted us today and Dunkirk was hit by Bf110's in a precision raid. 501 arrived on scene just after the bombs had fallen and gave chase but the Bf110 is a very fast machine and got away. "I tried to catch the blighters, pulled the tit and gave her what for sir" said Teepee. "Rotters!" exclaimed Bonkin "You'd give them what for wouldn't you boy" he said as he ruffled Nigsy's head. "Sgt Thaine, could you see if you can get a damage report? I need to know if we can rely on chain home now that the buggers have blinded us".

As it turned out Dunkirk suffered superficial damage but was operational, but we were blind along 80 miles or so of the south coast. Command had called to advise of 2 convoys in the estuary, indeed we could see them sail out from Southend on a clear day like today with a good pair of goggles. Sure enough at noon the Huns couldn't resist as Dunkirk picked up the first plots and Gravesend was put at Readiness. The sound of busying ground personnel warming up the engines and repositioning our kites for the scramble, Teepee's flight being refueled with the 100 octane good stuff. "Kenley have been scrambled Sir" Sgt Thaine reported. "That's No.615 and No.64 up then, heading our way, we're sure to be next" said Teepee. "Sounds like you'll get your go at them today after all Bonks".

At 1220 we were scrambled onto 40 plus heading north out of Calais, forming up north of the aerodrome we quickly moved out, 10 rugged and battle hardened Hurricanes bar one, a new face, LAC "Zombie" Richey, "How many hours?" PO Toxic asked, "9 Sir", Christ they were getting younger "Stick to me like glue and you might live" I said. No.615 Panta Sqn had met Jerry fighters over Deal already and lost 2 chaps quickly, "ETA 2 mins Panta, hold fast". We past Panta and headed straight into a swirling mass of aeroplanes in combat. Spitfires were also in the area, I ordered to engage at will. I soon latched onto a 109 10 miles off North Foreland but he was too powerful, and from going from a beehive of aircraft we were alone, dualling it out, both of us quickly lost our wingmen in the melee. He fired from range but missed we short of lead but he could escape because of his superior engine power and this dance continued for 10 minutes slowly moving west. Then I took my opportunity with an aggressive defence and brilliantly landed myself onto his 6 o'clock not 50 yards behind him, I saw him look over and had a mixed face of shock and fear at his predicament, but before I could get into a shooting position he pushed down and quickly moved out of range. I tracked him but to no avail. "This one is a no-score draw Fritz" I muttered to myself. Then I spotted the Stuka party and jumped in, firstly blasting a Hun who was at the top of his apex, to my delight glycol and fire streamed out of this one, he dived away but I didn't see him crash so I claim him as probable. Then I lined up for an attack on the Stukas, my squadron already whittling down their numbers. I struck one hard, glycol poured out of his black crossed trolley but he carried on, he was heavily damaged. I then spotted another escort fighter and got into a perfect position for him, cleanly shooting into his topside, this scoundrel hadn't expected me at all as I jumped him from above, he rocked violently as my bullets found their place in his verminous machine. He did the right thing by taking to his parachute. I claim this 109 as destroyed. I then became involved in another scrap where I raked a third 109 but his desperate "forward roll" meant that I only scored some damage to him. The fight was over, they wanted out and so did we, I flew back to Gravesend after forming up with PO Robo and PO Toxic and landed without further incident.

'Panta' squadron was operating at full strength again today. The pilots were split into 3 flights, Red Section consisting of myself as Red 1, Red 2: S/A Biggles, Red 3: Tech Spud and Red 4 S/A Kev. Blue section was led by F/O Random, Blue 2 L/A Donkey, Blue 3: P/O Siddich and Blue 4: S/A Midge. Yellow section was led by W/O Hollywood, Yellow 2: L/A Stokesey, Yellow 3: W/O Baron, Yellow 4: L/A Wolf and Yellow 5: Katt.

We were waiting at 5 minutes readiness and when scrambled we struggled to get off the ground in that time. There was some confusion after T/O as two contacts overflew the airfield and it took sometime to confirm that they weren't E/A. I finally reformed the squadron over Maidstone at Angles 8 and then followed my vector towards Manston climbing to Angles 12. We were aware that a large force was coming in and were told to patrol Manston airspace. En route I experienced a sticky mixture level and had to drop out of formation handing control of Red section to Tech Spud. I soon fixed my problem and joined up as No. 4 in the formation.
We came into contact with some ME 109s and it was at this time that Blue 1 was shot down. I told the rest of the squadron to retreat towards Deal and reform. We then turned N again to CAP Manston. We came into contact with a big dogfight and I sent Blue and Yellow sections toward the Convoy and took Red section to provide cover from the fighters.
At this time I noticed a large formation of E/A to the NE and called out the tally, sending 'Panta' into the bombers.

I attacked from the rear and got a JU 87 smoking and saw another JU87 go down in flames on the far right of the formation. He must have been the only Nazi in that squadron. I attacked again and again making at least 4 passes on the formation. I saw 3 Ju87 that I shot at fall out of formation. The Bombers attacked the ships and sunk at least one of them. 'Panta' followed them down and kept up the attacks. At about this time I caught a bullet in my engine and headed towards land. I ditched just offshore of Herne Bay and was lucky enough to fight the current and reach the beach.

Took off from Kenley got involved in a fur-ball over mansten/ramsgate area i got separated from yellow section. Spotted four 109s coming around my six so i ran back inland towards canterbury got some height and energy and yellow section reported bombers heading for the ships about east of mansten so i set course for the bombers. I managed one pass on an ju87 which crippled his radiator. I knew 109s were in the area so i kept an eye out spotted two coming on my six at about 600 meters closing fast i wanted them to think that i didn't know they were there, i started a slow left hand bank and he followed i slowly tighten the turn as he got closer, when he was about 100 meters i broke and he turned with me at that point i knew he was ending up in the channel/north sea. i hit him and lite him up with one of the most worst fires i have seen, gladly i saw him manged to blow the hatch and jump for the silk biggles saw the flaming 109 smash to the sea. on return to base i ran out of fuel due to a leaking aux tank inflicted by the ju87s rear gunner but landed safely at eastchurch.

Became airbourne as Yellow3 after some confusion as to who was who because of not all skins appearing in time, but most essentially we all took orft, [posh way of saying off,] and headed on a bearing of 100deg.
Arriving at Manston area where Red section were mixing it with 109s out to sea. S/ldr Hawes ordered us plus Blue flight to head back to the Isle of Sheppey to patrol over the convoy which was heading due East.
I reached the convoy before the others and flew in wide circles East of them to be in a better position to spot and engage
the enemy which i spotted comming in from the North sea. Informed everyone over the R/T and made a head on pass into the Stukas, came about to attack from the rear of the right hand line astern formation and got one streaming, at that moment a 109 came down from above in a shallow dive in front of me, so i peppered him in passing getting hits but he carried on his dive which i did'nt follow but re engaged the Stukas. The leaders were already starting their attack dive as i caught up with the right hand section to resume play but got hit in the engine resulting in loss of oil.
Informed the skipper i was RTB and made a beeline for Manston, it being the nearest. Made it to a couple of fields NorWest of Manston approach and put her down dead stick in a gorgeous pasture surrounded by bored looking cows, i done a quick recce' to make sure their was'nt a nasty bad tempered bull about and legged it to a Host house nearby as fast as i could just in case the nasty beastie was hiding behind a cow, why it would be behind i cannot imagine, me being a devout christian. Ended up in the Hosthouse and spent a couple of hours admiring the hops and tasting the local brew. What a wonderful war.

Squadron: No.615 "County of Surrey" Squadron
Squadron code: "KW"
Pilot name: Biggles
Date: 12th August 1940
Base: Kenley
Marking: I for 'Ink'

Synopsis:
Panta was scrambled from Kendly at 1200 hours to intersept a large formation of enemy bomber at that time unconfirmed with a likely target that was the shipping off the north coast of Manston. Due to varying reasons, The squadron became scattered after take off with what appeared to be red flight taking off to intercept "Enemy contacts", these contacts turned out to be Some rather startled Wellingtons that were lea-surly making their way down south. They appeared to be understandably rustled by the appearance of 3+ Hurricanes and were soon sent on their way. 64 were always a bit excitable in reporting contacts!615 then presided to form itself again and soon the the equivalent of a full house was storming and rumbling its way up to Manston. It was when we were nearing Manson that Blue section off to our left were bounced by 109s and promptly broke with the rest of the squadron from what I could tell continuing on to go feet wet, nearing the shipping lanes.

It was at this point that I spotted more 109s off to our right, Red leader had fallen behind with engine troubles and S/A Spud could not confirm a sighting on the blighter's so I lead what was left of Red section with L/A Wolf in tow into a brief dogfight, where I damaged a 109. Flight Sargent Baron then spotted as what he described as a "Massive Fur-ball of stukas" heading towards the ships, they were after our bloody tea! With the 109s dissipated at the arrival of 64 (late again), Red section under Squadron leader Hawes promptly made their way over to the bombers and gave them along with blue and yellow section a damned good thrashing! I followed Spud in as he attacked the endmost Stuka on the right side of the flight, Spud set him streaming with a good burst and I followed by Hitting him with my armour piercing and sending him into the drink, a satisfying sight indeed! What followed was quite perculier as I saw Spud career into an 87, jump open his chute, but what appeared to be a table cloth and a pair of knickers flew out of where his chute should be, I watched with dismay as he fell. After turning in for another run I arched over two of the rearmost aircraft and set both of them streaming after flying past I caught a glimpse of both of them gradually losing hight until the windscreen went to bit in front of me and a shard of glass hit me in the face, the next bit is a bit fuzzy as bloody flowed down my face and the world went red, It was the 109s back for revenge, there where large thunks as 20mm pounded my crate until the world went black and I for Ink arched over and smashed into the sea.
