Squadron: No.615 "County of Surrey" Squadron
Squadron code: "KW"
Pilot name: Hawes
Date: 5 August 1940
Time: 1210
Base: Kenley
Marking: T for 'Toc'
Serial number: L2098

The squadron was split into 3 sections. Red section consisted of myself, S/A Kev, W/O Hollywood and S/A Midge. Blue section: F/O Random, Cpl Katt, Cpl Johnny and L/A Stokesey. Yellow section; F/O Siddich, L/A Donkey, Tech Spud and W/O Baron.

'Panta' took off as the No.2 in the wing after 'Mandrel'. Red section toof off and was joined by Blue and Yellow section in the circuit in record time. After forming up I vectored 180° and was over the south coast when Group gave us a new vector for a 30+ formation coming in. I told Yellow section to stay high and to my right to look for snappers and told Blue to fly 1000 yards to my right so we would pick up the bandits on our 11/1 O'clock.
I spotted the EA on my nose and slightly below well out into the channel and called in the contact to Group. I ordered Blue 1 to tackle the near flight of EA and took Red section to its rear. After a few minutes I realised that the JU88s, as they turned out to be, where not being covered by the usually 109s. I told Yellow 1 to take his section down and add to the destruction being handed out by Red and Blue. During the flight I saw at least 4 bombers fall in flames and by all accounts the rest of the formation was shot down or turned back for a long trip across the channel.
I made several passes and managed to get 3 bombers streaming. I saw 2 of them drop out of formation and turn away from the coast while losing height. During my last attack I was hit in the engine and had to turn toward land as we were quite far out at this stage. I nursed my dying Hurricane into a field and did a wheels up landing.

When I finally made it back to Kenely that evening in the crew bus Tech Spud told me that he had witnessed no more bombers heading to the coast when he broke off. Nobody had bought the farm, although many battered Hurricanes littered the aerodrome and fields around the south coast. We all agreed that 'Panta' had done an excellent job and were only sorry that the rest of the wing missed all the fun.

Squadron: No.64 Squadron
Squadron code: "SH"
Pilot name: Venom
Date: 12th August 1940
Base: Kenley
Type: Spitfire Ia (100oct)
Marking: Z

Synopsis:
Flew as Green Two with Looky as Green One Lead and Deeside Green Three. Some lads at the back had a dodgy take off, but the lead flights seemed to get off fine. Climbed to angels 20 going feet dry on the east coast Isle of Wight. Vectored onto bombers but only discovered one of the hurricane squadrons. We were engaged briefly with a lone 109 that dove away, I think Looky got some shots/hits on him, but I maintained altitude keeping visual with my lead, rejoining him at the top of his climb. Our flight was now 4 spitfires with Looky still lead. I firmly on his 4 o'clock. We turned about and searched for more enemies. Spotting two contacts who turned out to be yet more hurricanes.

We flew around so long simply searching that I was very nearly bingo fuel. So decided to RTB RAF Sandown.

Side note: Radar plots seemed to be completely incorrect during the flight. I don't know what they were doing on the ground down there. Confusing us with enemies fairly likely. I'm not really sure these mod cons are what they're cracked up to be. Where were the observer corps?

Bullets whistling by, the small dots were now one big black shadow on my windscreen, no time to evade. What began as a frontal attack on a Stuka formation, ended as 1 way ticket to Hurricane's paradise. That whistling again, the white of the pilot's eyes. One Stuka not being where it should be. Darkness.

No light again! The roaring sound of the mighty Hurricane engine all around me. Was it just a bad dream? Must be those pills that Hawes gave us earlier today.
"These will let you stay awake", he told us, "its gonna be a long flight!"
It might have been a bad decision to mix them with alcohol, which probably caused a hallucination of some kind. These were no Stukas in front of me. No, these were bigger, much bigger. And no escort in sight...

Feeling that this was a second chance sent from above, I felt fresh, reborn. But also like living on borrowed time. Something I should have done that I hadn't. Something about writing a report.

First pass, 2nd after Hawes as number 3 Red. I was eager to not make the mistake of the hallucination, a bit too eager as I had moved in front of number 2. Right side of the bomber formation, waiting for the last moment. No escort in sight...

Left engine perfectly lined up with my gun sight. The tail gunner couldn't even see me anymore as I was now next to him.
Now!! Plane is shaking, smoke is poring out of the left engine, black smoke too. Black smoke, a fighters wet dream. I knew this was enough to make the bomber go away, out of my future hallucinations.

I climbed up steeply, and as I came down for my 2nd pass, Johnny screamed:
"Confirm he's on fire! Who will confirm?!"
I saw him tumbling down in black smoke, if no one would confirm it I would. But Katt confirmed it, and I could pick my next target. It was like standing in front of an ice cream shop, and taking all the time in the world to make the best choice. So many flavors. I was feeling Banana and Lemon for this one, and Lemon was at the far end of the left side, with no cover on its left, while Banana was in the middle. It couldn't be both. You know from experience. So Lemon first. Meanwhile Johnny reported a 2nd burner, and demanded confirmation. He DID have 2 flavors at once! Ice cream for young people is irresistible.
No escort in sight, although this is normally the time when 109's are called in. Were we really this lucky?

Second bomber smoking, turning left now to avoid the bullets, that whistling sound! Too close, something red in the corner of my vision: "Tiny fuel leak tank 1" That must be my main tank, I presumed. No man overboard, as we say in Holland, I was still in fighting condition. This damage actually turned out to be the only damage I took this mission, in fact we didn't loose a single pilot in 615. I had carefully saved as much ammunition I could during each pass, and in the end only Spud and me remained to finish them off. And so we did.
The last bomber was trying to turn away after Spud's treatment, and I was closing in for the mercy blow.
"He's dropped his bombs Hollywood"
We decided to let this one go, although he wasn't really going anywhere but down to the sea. The English Channel that is, not the German Channel.

Landed at Shoreham (or something like that), with fuel to spare actually. I throttled up to return to the fight after I heard the fighting was at Whight Isle, but then darkness again.

Synopsis: Flew as Gold 3 and set heading for the Isle of Wight with T-Tyrone leading and M-Dange on my right. Evidently overused my boost tit and the radiator perforated just as I reached 12,000 feet. Dropped out of formation and managed a landing with the engine almost gone, at Shoreham. After a wild ride in an MG driven by a patriotic civilian, I jumped into a spare a/c and was taxiing gently when another a/c seemed to appear from nowhere, we collided, I jumped out of the cockpit and ran for my life before the explosion. Having blown any chance to rejoin the mission, I unsuccessfully reconned the area around Kenley, trying to find Croydon and Biggin Hill at 6000 ft. More reconnaissance from the air is obviously required; I landed back at Kenley without a shot being fired. Bollux!

COMBAT FLIGHT RECORD

Flew as Blue 2 alongside Blue Leader F/O Teepee,Blue 3 LAC Toxic and Blue 4 LAC Major from RAF Kenley, the C/O had us cross country all the way down to the Solent and then around the IOW to head off an incoming raid.

On arrival at the IOW we could hear our comrades of 615 Squadron getting stuck in to the hun invader and doing a sterling job in the process. We were getting our wires crossed at this time bouncing 64 Squadron who in turn were bouncing us!
Once the madness had settled down we started searching the blue for the enemy, suddenly contrails appeared from above and our real battle began in earnest.

I was very saddened to hear Blue Leader get hit as he called out his intentions of trying to land his kite at RAF Tangmere,I knew we’d miss his lead.

I now took over lead and tried to get the remainder of Blue section to rendezvous over Selsey bill at Angels 5 but as I did,a stray 109 flew straight in front of me and I gave chase getting hits on his machine but not quite enough to send him Southwards,P/O Bully was also targeting the same 109,and the 109 eventually fell into the sea.

After my engagement had broken off I was again saddened to hear that LAC Major had been shot down, and that LAC Toxic had been taken out by an aircraft ramming him!,but did not hear if he was injured or otherwise.I later heard after the battle that LAC Toxic had made a safe landing and that he was still alive, which was great news.

After what seemed an age there were only a few of us old warriors left to take the fight to the hun,on looking down at my fuel gauge I realised I was running near empty, with little ammo left so I took the decision to land at RAF Bembridge on the IOW,and put here down there.

It had been quite a day,and I had’nt really achieved anything albeit staying alive, anyway that evening I took the boat back to camp got myself a ‘Badgers’and joined in the merryment with F/O Teepee setting light to another Grand piano just outside the mess,.....where does he get these old Joanna’s from I asked myself!

Flew as Green 3 with Looky and Venom. We spotted contacts just off the Isle of Wight which turned out to be Hurricanes. Regrouping to the east of the island, I lost sight of the squadron. While trying to locate them again, I came across a 109. Next second, I experienced a strange out of body experience and everything went black...

I had a minor accident at takeoff. Took off with Vukac and flew to Isle of Wight. Vukac had a engine trouble. I spotted some contacts and that was our Hurricane chaps. Got disco.
Took off again and got disco a few min later.
(there was a storm and my ruter restarted)
