64. came under attack while lining up on the runway. Low flying 110 escorted by 109's.
Observed numerous hits on the airfield, but the runway was unscathed. Got up unharmed.
(Was late for the party- but experienced this last week)
Once airborne, everyone got scattered, with some elements working together to bring

down the fighters.

More plots came in of bombers at medium altitude. I found myself alone as I was climbing over Margate. Made south for Dover where I observed 10 contacts scattered from 8-20,000 feet. As I approached I noticed that the contacts were mostly Hurricanes, caught up in a vertical fight with unseen E/A.I got up to angels 20, just feet wet of Dover when I noticed a lone 109 below and alone. I lined up on him and stalked him for some time, but he was always just outside a good firing solution.

Finally, he went into a dive towards another another RAF fighter. He was pulling away, but I give a good squeeze at 200 yards so that my tracers might convince him to break off his attack. It was a horrible shot, but I observed hits on the E/A right wing.
Unfortunately, I had to pull up tp prevent wingtearing in the near veritcal dive. I reaquired the E/A, but we were coming up midchannel and another 109 was lining up behind me.

I shook off my assailant and made contact with my trusty flight lead Vranac. We joined up and returned to Manston and landed together.

Wide eyed and flabbergasted, 16 Spitfire pilots of 64 Squadron stare dumbfounded at thier 2'oclock position parked in a neat line on the edge of RAF Manston and watch numerous specs, 5 miles out and closing fast, head towards the aerodrome. "Scramble Scramble Scramble" the RT screams. Green flight breaks the wire with red trailing fast. All spitfires manage to take to the air unscathed by the explosions of dropped ordanace around them.

No time to form up. 64 engages numerous bf 110s directly after takeoff. I saddle onto a 110 flying over Manston in a right handed turn and fire a quick burst into the fuselage. The pilot quickly evades and pulls into sharp climb, closing the distance even further as I climb after him. Tracers shoot past me from 12 low into the paniked 110 pilot. "Check your fire damnit!" I call out to an unknown RAF pilot out of sight below my aircraft who is target fixiated on the same 110. I continue my verticle lead turn towards the 110, both of us now fighting gravity upside down over RAF Manston and fire another burst into his aircraft. 30 seconds later I watch as the 110 explodes into a ball of fire on english soil. No chutes were seen.

With no time to bathe in victory I find myself flying over the bay of Manston 50 seconds later. Low over the waves I scan the beehive of fencing aircraft for enemy. There, at my twelve I sight a lone spitfire pursuing another 110 in a left turn. 300 yards behind the spit, I recognize its markings. It's Vranac scissoring to avoid the rear gunner's fire. I call out to him on the RT. Vranac responds the he is low on ammo. "Roger Vranac, I'll take him from here." Vranac peels to the starboard side of the 110 leaving my sights filled with only one aircraft. I fire into the huns port engine. Leaking glycol confirms that my aim is true. The hun attempts a slow climb the the left. My second burst tears into the area between port engine and fuselage, this time causing black smoke to pour.

"Whoever is sixing that 110, you have a 109 coming in on you fast" the RT crackels. I crane my neck to starboard, only to see a single engined hun quickly boring down on my six. I slowly turn to the right simultaneouly keeping my eye on him. Judging by his excess speed he will be within firing range in two seconds. I wait until the last moment and kick the rudder hard right to avoid his onslaught. He doesn't need to fire. The sudden change of direction causes my spitfire to initiate a hard roll, turning into an angry spin. I fight the stick to regain controlled flight but it is of no avail. 150 yards off the deck of the channel coast, my aircraft hits the water and disintigrates upon impact.

Not a very good Sortie from me unfortunately, We took off as Red Section we located the bombers just as they were getting feet dry between Deal and Mansten i followed Red 1 'Random' Down and made a single pass nailing a 1 sec burst into a bomber as i swept through i could not confirm that i done any damage. Then i spotted 109s all over the place and we could not stay with the bombers.

I did not manage to get any solutions on the 109s i took a few hits but no critical damage we then got orders to RTB and the rest off 615 regrouped over Dover Harbour at Angels 10 and we made our way back.

Synopsis:

Dispersal at west end of airfield well organized by flts and lined up for a take-off using the whole airfield parallel to runway 10. Scrambled and took off by flts peeling off from the right in orderly fashion. This all worked extremely well with a fair amount of order despite the stress of an emergency scramble.

Once in the air all hell broke loose with Spitfires and Bf110 everywhere. Got on the tail of one which I should have had cold but my shooting was all over the place. Scored some hits but no fatal damage. Once the 110s where cleared from the area we spiralled to angels 18-20 and engaged Bf109s above and behind the bomber force. Tangled with a Bf109 and again scored some strikes but nothing noteworthy.

By the time this tussle was over the Sqn had moved over deal so I headed in that direction arriving just as order to RTB was given. RV'd with the rest of Blue Flt and Venom just in time to do a text book four ship touch down.

Managed to sneak up on a 109 over Dover at 16k. He seemed to be damaged after after my first burst, he tried to dive away but i managed to stay with him. Gave him a few more burst and he caught fire, a proper flamer!

Found myself alone over the channel after that and made my way back to Manston where i landed.

Form 540
Mission 23
Squadron 64
Date: 12th August 1940
Time: 1400 hrs
Aerodrome: Manston
Base: Kenley
Aeroplane: Spitfire 1a (100oct) / SH-W Serial number: K9964

Synopsis:
On a first occasion, our squadron was organised correctly parked in their allocated flight order, facing east, on the west part the aerodrome perimeter, many thanks to our ground crew.
I patiently sat strapped in the cockpit, canopy open, at readiness for the 'Order to standby' but alas we were all waiting endlessly for the order to 'start up engine'.

Then suddenly over the RT, "Contacts coming in low on our two o'clock, their Jerry"!
Without hesitation I pressed the starter, the Merlin spluttered into life (unfortunately cold). Why oh why were we not all 'At Standby', heaven knows! A coms 'cock-up alright!
'Now we're all 'caught with our pants down', we attempted to scrambling across the airfield, head on with approach hostile planes dropping their dammed 'eggs' in our path, all hell broke loose, as we dodged veering planes and exploding bombs!
My Spit eventually lifted off the ground, wheels up, canopy closing as I bank over to turn sharply left to avoid possible cannon fire from the now identified as 110s.
I continued to circle to gain height as Jerry was now mainly below hammering our aerodrome, some of our guys were in the position to give chase as these assailants now turned tail for home, as quick as it started it was then all over, it appeared that Jerry had gone for the moment.

General view was to continue to climb on a left turn to form up above Manston and reach an operational height to engage with possible bomber escorts, expected to be well above fifteen thousand feet.
I reached twenty K heading on a safer straight heading east among other Spitfires. Above us were circling contrails, assumed to be 109s, they then were diving on us, "Spitfire break" was the common cry on the RT.
Not knowing whether you are the actual target or not, I naturally break to my left to dive and pull up. This manoeuvre continued for several times between Deal and Manston Bay without any fruitful engagement. Until there were no sigh of any hostile (fighters or bombers), fuel now running low, other squadron guys were now headed back to Manston, so descending, I followed to RTB, landing from the east with the squadron to witness the damage to our aerodrome.

There one could see the dots appearing over the horizon, becoming bigger fast. Where's the order to Scramble? Let's get airborne. What are we waiting for?
Seconds felt like minutes. Finally I saw P/O Luke, Blue 1 and my flight leader, push the throttle forward, his Spitfire accelerating out of it's parking position. I too pushed my throttle as far forward as possible. "Blue 2 rolling", I transmited; nervously watching the two contacts on my 2 o'clock diving down on us. There was no need for skill this time, this time I was dependend on luck, and luck only. Tracers zipped past my canopy; rounds plowed through the ground throwing dirt into my way. Finally, I pulled her into a shallow climb, later then normal to have enough velocity for combat.
I followed Luke into a right climb. There were still tracers passing my plane. A 110 passed me from the right guns blazing, then a 109 and another 110 diving on me. But still I did not recieve damage. I made it through the worst without a scratch.

I followed some Spitfires chasing a 110 over the bay. The 110 seemed already leaking fluid. Suddenly another stream of tracers below me towards my 64 comrades. A 109 was approaching fast. I dived down on it sending some short squirts after the hun. I could only see minor hits, no severe damage. The hun accelerated on low altitude towards france and I followed him until Luke called me to abandon the attack. The order was to reform over Ramsgate and get to altitude fast. This was probably not the only attack.

The second wave came from the southeast slightly lower than us. We were already close to angles 20. Bombers on the way to Manston with escorts trying to outclimb us. I was attacked once during the following dogfight but could shake of my pursuer. I made contact with P/O Luke again and formed up on him, covering his six as best as possible. Blue leader attacked another 109, damaging its radiators. The hun dived towards safety and we abandoned. There was no threat from that one anymore.

Meanwhile contacts were reported over Dover and we set course south along the coast. In between it was hard to tell who's chasing who. Suddenly a 109 appeared on my low 11 o'clock. I informed my flight leader about this contact and set after him, sending some rounds to scare him off. He speeded towards France, me and F/O Looky following him. But we soon realised that there was no point in chasing him any further. So we broke off. On the way back I spotted another 109 low with south course. I went once more into the attack but was too fast. I overshot and pulled my crate into a barrel role to gain position again. The hun echoed my climb and we ended in some kind of vertical scissors. I was on his belly side so he had no possibility to see me. Unluckily for him he put his plane into a dive right in front of me and I took my chance. Lighting up my guns I set a stream of bullets into his path thereby damaging both his radiators.

After I had recovered from manoeuvering, I saw him escaping south. The order was to RTB anway. On the way back I was joined by Luke and Venom, and we landed safely at Manston. We were happy to see some more Spitfire's return after us.

Got airborne as Gold 2 along with P/O Robo as Gold one and LAC Schmuk as Gold 3. The damn ground crew have been messing with my rudder again, and I suffered from the plane constantly wanting to turn left. Had to abort the first take off and go around again. It took a while to get back together with the rest of the mighty 501 squadron, but just as I caught up, cries came over the radio that the enemy bomber formation had been spotted. I followed Gold leader and attacked the right had side of the large formation. I saw Gold Leader get good hits on a bomber, and soon opened up myself. I hit the DO-17 in his starboard wing, and saw his aileron fly off and his engine started to leak oil. The stricken plane fell away from the formation and towards Deal. Lets hope he avoided the houses down there.

I pulled away from the bombers checking my six watching out for the 109s, who had been spotted around the formation. By now I had lost visual contact with the rest of Gold section, but could not worry about that as the defence of England was paramount. I swung round and attacked the Hun again. getting good hits into another DO-17. As my Hurricane pulled up and away from the formation again, I saw two Hurricanes come in and attack the same bomber and get good hits. This was possibly the two pilots of Red section.

The fight was now spread out and I kept going form place to place to try and find some targets to shoot at. The bombers and been massacred by the mighty Hurricanes of 501 & 615 and the enemy fighters had not really made their presence felt. After flying around for 10 minutes I made Contact with F/O's Teepee & Bonkin above Canterbury, and after receiving orders from the boss we returned to base at Gravesend.
