Adlerangriff. Mission 24: 12th August (4. Folkestone 1700)

Squadron: No. 501 "County of Gloucester" Squadron
Squadron Code: TB
Pilot Name: Osprey
Date: 12 Aug 1940 1900, Folkestone
Base: Kenley
Type: Hawker Hurricane Ia 100 Oct
Marking: P for Pip
Serial: V6620

Synopsis
What a day. By Midday we'd given the Hun a black eye on over the Solent, flown back to Sector E, been greeted by none other than the Prime Minister and his entourage before I had to tear a strip off one of the officers for the antics of his drunken labrador only to be scrambled once more to smash home some more Huns. Then we were diverted to Kenley, partly because Manston had taken a pounding and partly to get the Wing back together, and Stuffy Dowding did say that he wouldn't give it up because that guttersnipe Goebels would lap it up. Following a landing at Kenley I jumped from my trusty machine, "Get that rearmed and fueled Hoskins, double quick because the wing is coming in". No.501 were first to arrive but all of the chaps were coming back in pairs. "What's the form Jeremy?" I asked the duty officer, "Lost a couple from No.64 today, new chaps, very green, and one Polish pilot from 615 hasn't answered his R/T for 25 minutes, we think he's a goner". "Well, there's a war on, we have to get on with things. One thing is for sure, Goering lost a lot more, he's counting the cost today, we played with a straight bat today and hit several through the covers". FO Bonkin had also landed, Nigsy on his lap for the trip, "What the devil...." exclaimed the duty officer "Forget it Squadron Leader, he's a good egg and Churchill himself has endorsed Nigsy already. Now, let's get a spot to eat". As I walked into the mess there was a blazing row at the table. My old pal 'Sailor' Malan was arguing intensely with that chap Badar, the legless pilot from 10 Group whom I had heard was 'difficult'. "Big Wing is the trick, we'll knock them as one", and Malan, who'd seen enough combat to last a lifetime replied in thick South African "Nit a charsn Baadaa, yaw awlweeys layte fur da paartee". At that point the RAF Regimental police arrived and calmed the situation down. The chaps were arriving now and pretty soon the banter started flying between the chaps "Flying buses" and "Brylcreme", "surprised you found your way back" and "training aeroplane" was banded about. I was happy to allow them to have some fun, then FO Teepee stood up and started to organise a cricket match for the afternoon. "Sit down Flying Officer, we're on duty". I wish I'd said nothing as one of the enlisted men ran into the mess, "Wing COmmander Prickman Sir?", "Over here corporal, what's the flap for?". "Uxbridge, 30 minutes standby sir". Damn, no rest, Jerry was throwing it all at us today.

By 1700 the entire wing had been rearmed, refueled and brought to 5 minutes standby, and it was still bloody hot. The next thing we new control had scrambled all flights and this included No.64 who mustered a whopping 16 Spitfires for the show. I made us out as a round 39, the runway was packed as each squadron took to the skies. I wanted to try out this "Big Wing" that Badar had seen fit to make a scene about for myself. I had heard stories of them being late for the party, I knew that Kenley was an organised fighting unit so thought we had a fair chance of a decent trial which I could report back to ops. "Panta take the starboard and Freema take the port". "Can you go any faster?" came the deliberately insulting request from one of the Spitfire boys, followed by derision and mutterings from at least 15 Hurricane pilots of both squadrons in reply, but mixed in there clearly was a "Fuck off". "Keep that R/T quiet" I bellowed. We approached Folkstone at around angels 17, "bearing one nine zero 40 plus at angels fifteen, 10 miles, you should see them soon" came from command. Then, there they were over the sea, a mass of black dots heading to make trouble. What a shock it must've been to them to think they had got so far without incident only to face nearly 40 enemy fighters between them and home. "Head on attack, Tally ho!" I cried as we screamed downhill directly for them "They're Junkers Sir" said Panta who hit the western grouping first, but no time to adjust, we went though the formation at over 250mph with lead pouring from my miracle machine. I observed strikes into one of the scoundrels and certainly damaged him. Turning for another pass I opened fire on a second from closing 250 yards, I could see panic in the greenhouse as tracer whipped past my canopy mixed with the odd strike and bang on mighty Hurricane. He belched thick black smoke and a fire started, I had killed the chap in the rear gun as he had stopped firing. The hun harbinger fell away, gunner slumped over and blood clear in the glass as the exit hatches were thrown out, he was going for a burton and I claim him as destroyed. I then caught up with another "Not so fast Fritz" I muttered as I opened fire, raking his machine which spewed fliuds and flame before entering a deadly spiral. Another Ju88 removed from Hitler's armies. Soonafter I was engaged by 109 fighters and had to leave the bombers, 3 or 4 of the buggers must've seen my Wing Co pennant and fancied their chances. I evaded them all with a standard spiral evasion move before climbing up again. It was then I received some lead from a single Hun bugger, but good old Stuffy had insisted on armoured glass and that had taken it - good show you boffins. Then I dived onto a lone, retreating Ju88 over Folkestone. Barely able to see I braved it but misjudged my closing speed and collided...........

Took off this evening as White 2. I dont know who the bloody hell keeps messing with me in this roatation but I wish that the 64 boys would accept me as one of thier own. I know as the new guy the fellas have kept thier distance but I suppose with the casulties being as high as they have been that is only natural.

Tonight I need to give my chief a beer as my spitty fired up without a hitch. It was an impressive sight to see all the Hurricanes from 615 and 501 take off. However I admit I do not like the idea of flying as a big wing as I felt to keep 160MPH I would have to fly with my damn flaps and gear down. That and it felt like Chaos to me trying to find my flight.

Made contact with the enemy over folkstone I had one 109 get on my tail but I was able to shake him even though he got a few through my fuselage. I lost White 1 and was never able to find him again however I hooked up with three other stragglers. I then observed a lone JU88 trying to get back to france. I got great hits on him and was estatic to see his right engine catch fire and plunge down into the drink. It was my first Squadron Kill.

Later I engaged a 109 over the channel but the pilot was good and I was never able to get guns on him. We waved at one another as he went back over the channel. I will see him again I am sure.

I landed at Lympne with a few of the other chaps. I am here to stay.

Took off as Gold leader with Sgt. Mauf as Gold 2. After rotation, we did several circuits around the airfield, watching the Panta squadron forming up on the runway, someone came up with a brilliant idea of making a low pass on those poor buggers. Everybody got in the air eventually, we immediately managed to get mixed up completely. Air was full of KWs and SDs, some of them were flying upside down just to add to the overall atmosphere of the RAF Big Wing taking off. Spitfires moaning about Hurricanes being too slow, Hurricanes ignoring those bastards... simply business as usual. I amnaged to form back on Mauf after a while, the flight were about to intercept a massive plot - Jerry is trying it again. And he will fail again, too. Angels 18, first section reports 2 big groups of bombers, co-alt. W/Cdr sends Panta to the southern formation, Mandril, that is us, will do a head-on pass on the ones on the left. Gunsight on, full power, harness tight, I remember my family in the occupied Czechoslovakia and i suddenly feel a big urge to hurt the Hun, to hurt him bad. I line up on the bomber on the far right, I casually scan the sky for the snappers, there they are, contrails. Some more slightly lower. Nothing will stop this Hurricane though. Gold 2 stay close, one pass one kill. Tally ho, lads!

Insane speed, the face of the shiny Ju-88 grows bigger, I know what to do. I place my piper right in the middle, I shout as I pull the trigger, I see perspex shattering, I sure as hell don't want to be in that glasshouse, poor sods. Swoosh as we merge, I swing around, I see my target drifting low and away from the main group, no time to watch the poor bomber, he's got no control. Mauf still behind me? No time to talk, the sky is full of targets, simply because up here, everybody is a target. Watch it they're dropping down on us, I tighten up my turn and do a fast S to check my six
... clean. I line up behind the main group again and close up behind another Ju-88, I spray him with short bursts, flames. Another down, watch it watch it, break break. I do break, too, just in case. Dangerous game we're playing. Truly amazed, I am watching the 501 biting into the bombers until they're all gone. Some of them are turning back, but I can't see them myself. I see a huge explosion just after F/O Bunny reported commencing his attack on the bomber. I can only hope that explosion was the Ju, not one of ours... I see two more in the front, just about to reach the shoreline. I listen to P/O Meaker reporting these two as well, attacking one streaming. I watch him getting good hits into the second bomber. I catch the first one, brave chap, or maybe he still thinks he's leading a big formation and shot him down with a long burst. This ship turns upside down and goes straight in, trailing huge flame. Four parachutes, welcome to England chaps. I am very short on ammo. Many pilots still engaged with 109s, Sgt. Mauf reports being winchester just on 109s tail. That's too bat me ol pal. I am also not too good with ammo. I find another target, lone bomber turning around, on of the southern group, and I go vertical to extend the rest of my magazines into his belly. After I've done just that, I surprisingly watched it spitting oil from both engines and dropping alt. Winchester, Gold leader is RTBing. I have a good look on my aircraft, a few bullet holes in port wing, trailing fuel. I didn't even notice I got hit. I am not risking trying to make it all the way to Kenley, I shall land at Hawkinge to get their lads to patch me up.

As I land and taxi to the hangar, large group of ground staff cheer me up on the ground. Jolly good show, officer. We've been watching you wiping them sods from the sky. I feel exhausted and worn out like my trusty Hurricane...

Squadron: No.615 "County of Surrey" Squadron
Squadron Code: KW
Pilot Name: Kev
Call sign: Green 2
Date: 12th August 1940
Time: 17.05
Base: Kenley
Type: Hurricane I Rotol
Marking: L - London
Serial Number: V6618

Synopsis:

Panta Sqn had moved back to the parent station of Kenley. We were at 2 minutes readiness when the order was given for a wing scramble. Number 501 Sqn, call sign Mandrel took off first and formed in good order. We followed next and formed on Mandrels right hand side and set s course of approximately 120 degrees.

We crossed the coast in the Hawkinge Sector near Deal when an En formation was sighted by the lead element. Red leader ordered yellow and green flight to engage the fighter escort to give Red and Blue the opportunity of making a couple of passes on the bomber formation.

I climbed behind green leader in a right hand turn when I sighted Bf 109s falling on us. I called the bandits position and took immediate evasive action. I was engaged for what seem like hours by 2 or 3 En fighters but managed to evade their energy attacks by turning hard into them then diving to gain energy and repeating the manoeuvre when one made an attack.

After what seemed like ages the sky was empty again and I had escaped in one piece! Listing to the chat over the RT JT Biggles was in the area and proposed a landing at Hawkinge. The airfield had taken a pasting from the Huns however most of the runway was still ok for landing. Unfortunately Biggles caught a wheel in one of the craters and flipped himself over. He climbed out of the grazed Hurricane quite unhurt with a large grin on his face having drowned a Ju88. We joined P/O Baron, whom had already landed at Hawkinge due to lack of gravy at the tea wagon for a well-earned brew and buscuits.

I left the barracks coffee in hand, while the rest of the squadron had Tea, Brits. I make my way over to the weather station on base, "Awfully windy" I say taking a sip from my cup. "Yeah its looking really strong, probably going to get worse through out the day". I let out a single laugh and head towards my trusty Hawker Hurricane, after a quick inspection I head back to the barracks to meet with a few of the guys. We get to talking about the upcoming German raid, all that talk got us pretty riled up about the rest of the day. "Alright Lads get your gear together, we spotted a large movement of Ju-88's headed for the channel" Said Osprey. The men rush to their aircraft some only half dressed, we start up our aircraft and begin a taxi onto the runway, 501st in front followed by the 615 boys

With their adrenaline rushing and their head set on the Hun, some forget about the incredibly powerful cross wind. For some of them it hit them when it was too late, some had damaged wings even whole aircraft flipped over, "What a gust that must of been, whole thing flipped over" I mumble to my self. Soon after all of 501 made it up, 615 wasn't short to follow. As they began their take off it seemed to me that one of the 615 boys had a bit of a quarrel with the wind sock, and it seemed like the wind sock won. The 501st continued it's circuit around the airfield a few more times before heading east for the channel. Forming up behind Gold Leader as Gold 3, we formed a tight pack with 615 to our left and 64 to our right, a beautiful view from my Hurricane.

After what seemed like an eternity with ambitions high one of our boys out front spots the dirty bastards, "Large formation, seems to be Ju-88's to our 2!" He shouts. Tally-Ho, one by one we head for them, "Hit them head on, they don't like that" Says Osprey. I follow Gold leader in as we begin engaging Ju-88's one at a time, getting good hits on 2 of them. I break off as a 109 jumps onto my tail, then a second one up high, I get them to follow me into a large pack of Spitfires leading to their inevitable demise. With no sight on Gold Lead I continue to engage the bombers downing one my self and running out of ammunition just as I got to the second one.

With my ammunition spent as well as my main tank's, I turn for home. I check my six every now and then for some ballsy Hun. Off my 3 O'Clock high I spot Wing Commander Osprey moving to intercept a lone Ju-88. As he moves in he comes in over the radio, his voice is nervous "Ah! I've lost all control of the aircraft somethings wro...." As he collides with the Ju-88. The silence is eerie, I radio to the Squadron checking in. They slowly begin to check in, I can feel they're saddened just by their tone. With the lone 109's heading back home low on fuel, the rest of the group makes it's way back for Kenley.

After putting the aircraft down and Taxiing off I sit back and let out a breath, removing my cap and running my fingers through my hair, I dismount my aircraft and head for the barracks. I sit down in my bunk as a few of the 501st guys stroll in, I lay down and try to sleep knowing that the next days aren't going to be any easier.

With a slight struggle to find room on the strip I eventually got Airbourne and tagged onto the back of Gold flight, continuing to circle the field we eventually made off for the intercept. With the C\O calling bandits 12 o,clock low we quickly sent them spiralling and breaking the formation we set about dispatching them back across the channel. Having got good hits to 2 Hun and seeing them fall away I was then bounced by a Hun fighter, losing most of my control surfaces I had no option but to bail. Luckily close to home the launch didn't take to long to arrive and fish me out of the drink.
