Squadron: No. 64
Squadron Code: SH
Pilot Name: Wiggs
Date: Aug 12, 1940
Base: Kenley
Type: Spitfire 1a (100 Oct)
Marking:U
Serial number: L1040
Synopsis: Flew with Red Flight. Some of the aircraft in No. 64 Squadron had no markings (possibly including mine) and so it was impossible to ID most aircraft in my vicinity. Vranac was beside me and his markings were clear and easily readable as usual. I taxied through the airfield obstacles and stayed with the Group, behind the Hurri's, until just west of Manston; then began a rapid climb to 20,000 feet to intercept the expected 109's escorting incoming enemy bombers. Put a few bullets into at least one 109 who was veering to the left in front of me ... however I had lost my Flight and was too close to the French coast! Began receiving some unexpected hits, but I had good energy at the time. I increased my dive to gain even more energy and unsuccessfully craned my neck around to find my assailant.....never saw him. Despite severe avoidance action, I went into the Channel in a step-by-step dive from 18,000 feet, receiving incoming M-G fire most of the way down. Heard a great cheer of victory as I hit the water.....evidently my friends had brought down a 109 at the same time as my demise. Well done Chaps!

COMBAT FLIGHT RECORD

Today I was to fly once again with Blue section, and again as wingman for F/O Teepee,an honour as always, our trusted Blue Leader, along with LAC Broadsword Blue 3,for the first time.

Once airborne,we took a fair bit of time assembling the squadron in it’s formation before heading South East to head off an incoming raid of Ju88’s.

On finding our quarry we laid into them, decimating them within minutes,of our arrival, however, this also led to most of us splitting up as usual.I lost Blue Leader and Blue 3 in the melee and after seeing my target go down and being ‘Winchester’ I headed North towards the Thames to head back to Kenley.

I took the long way around to get home, but it was the safe way back,as I did’nt want to be anywhere near the coast without ammunition, this took time, the light was poor, and it was a very weary pilot that finally made it back to base, but there was the 'Badger's'to look forward to,and the cerimonial burning of a piano, courtesy of our Blue Leader!

Squadron: No. 501 "County of Gloucester" Squadron
Squadron Code: "SD"
Pilot Name: Flying Officer "Bunny" Hewitt
Date: 12th Aug 1940
Time: 1900
Base: RAF Kenley
Type: Hawker Hurricane Mk 1a (100 Oct)
Marking: "N" for Nuts
Serial Number: P3084

Synopsis:

The sun had passed its zenith, descending slowly to meet the horizon, the lower temperatures a blessed relief after the heat of the day. Unrelenting, the Germans continued to hurl aircraft at our island, there had been no let up for days now, and no end in sight.

I looked out to starboard - as far as the eye could see, the largest collection of Spitfires and Hurricanes I'd ever had the pleasure to see amassed. The Wing Co had seen fit to test out this new fangled theory, the Big Wing, assembling all the aircraft from one wing in an unholy assault on the target. This was immense, enough to cause even the hairs on the back of the neck to stand to attention.

Looking down through the scratched canopy I could make out Folkestone, 18,000 feet below, hazy in the warm evening sunlight. The poor buggers had no idea of the imminent attack, but we'd do our best to lessen any impact for those below.

"Two groups, one o'clock, two o'clock", from the Wing Co - steadily stating the enemy's position. A torrent of "Tally" echoed over comms, in affirmation. I could imagine the enemy going through the exact same procedure, each side eyeing the other up, weighing the odds in their favour, or against.

The OC 615 Sqd was vectored towards the far right group as we approached. He'd spotted enemy fighters in escort, the call was relayed to 64 Sqd; after all, that was their speciality.

Following our Flt Cdr, Flying Officer Bonkin, we dropped the noses for a head on pass. Too late on my approach, I shot past and pulled up, banked left and came back down on the formation of bombers. "Lining up for the front-right group." I called out, before picking my target. "Right-hand side. Going in."

The tracer began to spew from the rear gunner of the Ju-88 , doing its best to find its mark. I hesitated for the wings to fill the crosshairs, not wishing to waste the limited ammunition supply. Fire! Cordite filled my nostrils, the ratcheting noise of the guns mixed with the cacophony that already filled the air - whining engines, breathy wind, sizzling tracers and the incessant comms - a barrage on the senses that alone could overpower the strongest of men. Hits on the starboard engine, oil streamed. I flew over the enemy, rolled left and high, then dropped for the next pass - looking out for the ever-present threat of 109s. Noting all was clear, I picked out the sister aircraft to the previous, and sank below on my approach, attempting to hide myself from the rear gunner on top. At the last minute I pulled up, squeezing the trigger as I did so. Rounds hit, another leak from a starboard engine, they were both now crippled, but maintained formation. As I pulled up and over, to drop once again into position behind the front element, I caught up with the two left-hand aircraft, untouched so far. A quick glance behind me showed the entire German formation following, tracers drawing out the lines of fire that flowed back and forth between both sides.

"Bunny going left-hand side, lead group."

"Check sixes, 109s approaching." came Bully's voice.

I acknowledged. "Cheers."

The distance between myself and the next target decreased rapidly. A last second check of the convergence distance, a quick squeeze to test the belts were still working, and I started popping rounds into the thick black hide of the beast. Splashes of smoke indicated the damage accrued - just a bit closer and it'd be the end of him...just a bit closer...

Ah Kenley again--a fine place, the whole wing were here and and on 30mins standby.Rolls my fitter was concerned about "Mary" the canopy was sticking and he was worried it might not open if needed,i told him to pop over to 64 and borrow some of there famous hair product--well they do have gallons of the stuff. The conversation was cut short when we got the engine start up command.

I was flying today as yellow2,501 formed up first followed by 615 and 64 bringing up the rear.We took off and circled Kenley for the form up,Panta were on the right of 501 with 64 behind, moaning about the pace of climb--they were told what the rest of us thought in no uncertain terms, before the boss told us all to shut up.

Just going "feet wet" at 17000ft over folkstone the boss brought us into contact with masses of bombers with snappers above .Yellow and green sections were tasked to engage the 109's.we climbed hard to get co-alt with the enemy fighters but we were too late and the bastards dived on us,i got one on my six and made a hard break to the left loseing him, and found another one 300yrds ahead of me --i fired a long 3 sec burst but observed no hits. Then the engine packed up i dived down about 3/4000ft and headed for Lymph---not trusting the canopy,i knew i had one chance to make a deadstick landing.
Arriving over Lymph with 1500ft of altitude i made a perfect 3 pointer only to see streams of bullets/cannons shells just to the right of me,the bastard missed though---note to self"check six more often when landing near the combat zone" <----no, just ignore any death, damage or injury which occurs, report it and we'll try to bollock the twat responsible
