Squadron: No.501 "County of Gloucester" Squadron
Squadron code: "SD"
Pilot name: Flying Officer Teepee
Date: 15 Aug 1940 15:00
Base: RAF Gravesend
Type: Trusty Hawker Hurricane Mk 1A
Marking: "M for Marvel"
Serial number: N2617

Synopsis:

I could tell that today was going to be one of those days!

I had returned to my bunk last night after a splendid thrash in the Capital with my trusty Blue 2 wingman. A cavalcade of Champers, fillies and a stage show had used up all my readies so in order to get back to camp I had to borrow some cash from Meaks. Furthermore, my headache still hadn’t stopped throbbing and now I was back in the cockpit of my trusty Hurricane nursing an almighty hangover. I had already used up a quarter of my Oxygen by breathing whiffs of 100% to clear my head. Then there was that pesky dog, Nigsy. Bonkin had taught him some strange party tricks and I wished Bonkin had taken the mutt with him on his detachment to 615 Sqn. I was in no mood for finding a canine log near my trusty steed. Looking across I saw ‘Quiet Larry’ was Blue 3 and I could tell he was itching to get back at the Hun, after our last mission together. The Boss was to lead us on this trip.

The Ops Wizards had briefed us to expect more of the same and we could sense the impending battle that was a matter of minutes away. The scramble bell sounded and Gold & Green Sections were launched to intercept the Hun. We watched them take off in their incredible machines and knew it was only a matter of time before we were summoned. Sure enough the bell sounded and the Boss shouted at us to get in the air ’Bloody Quick!’. We launched with Red Section and climbed to patrol the area around Canterbury and to the North. With guidance from the RDF we were able to intercept the Black crossed crates between Eastchurch and Canterbury at about 15,000ft.

‘Tally Ho’ shouted the Boss and we attacked. I directed Blue Section to attack two vics of three Do17s. We attacked and gave a satisfying DeWilde welcome to the ugly bombers. I settled behind one of the verminous machines and blew the engine from the left wing with my deadly salvo. The enemy machine dropped like a stone but I didn’t see it crash. I claim 1 x probable Do17. I pulled up behind the enemy and dived in once again while noticing the rest of Blue Section also giving the Dark forces a dose of British lead. I despatched a second Do17 to the ground with its’ engine streaming fire and oil. I claim another 1 x probable Do17.

Looking around I saw a pair of Do17s just South of Eastchurch and radioed the fearless Meaker that these babies were ours. We chased the Hun machines and I began my dive to despatch this Harbinger of Doom! I was firing a long burst into the left most enemy aircraft when I heard the brave Meaker shout above the noise of battle ‘ Watch out Blue Leader, 109, br….’.

My time was now. I felt my amazing Hurricane shudder as a deadly onslaught ravaged my Marvel Machine. The Boffins at Hawkers had designed the stupendous machine with ruggedness in mind but this savagery was beyond even their wildest dreams. I breathed my last as the inky blackness descended and my last thoughts were melted away as my mind reached for my trusty four string and I played my lament into the oblivion…………Oh Bollocks!

Having just rushed back on the late ten o'clock from Waterloo via Red Hill I was already at boiling point on this clammy and hot day. I'd been to see Parky to complain about the losses in No.615 and to see what was to do about it, and also ask about DeWilde shortages and also about the new Hispano cannon which was rumoured around the Officers mess. "Well I will notify 6OTU to bolster them up but perhaps I should post them to Scotland for refit" said Parky, "Heavens no, No.615 need to be battering Jerry, I'll give them some of mine instead. And what about cannons and De WIlde? Arming really counts you know, if we had better firepower we could really stop Goering fast". "Well old boy, everybody wants DeWilde you know but it's a myth really, the boffins proved it. Good for moral but that's about it. One of the Spitfire squadrons tried the cannons but they jammed and were so useless that they begged for their Brownings back". I replied, "Well, that's because the Spitfire has that low drag thin wing. Give them to our Hurricanes, we can mount them upright as designed and let those Hun bombers have it. Why aren't the Ministry listening? It's all Spitfire you know". "Well Parky, good to see you, I must get back to the chaps" I said as I pulled my cap on with riding crop pinched underneath my arm. "See you soon, perhaps at our next Grouse shoot?". With that I left for Gravesend. I was dismayed at the sight when I got there, what a bloody mess. "What's going on? Why are you all so slovenly dressed? What's this revolver doing out on display? Not fit for the King man" I ranted as I kicked PO Meakers feet off the table. He looked particularly rough as did Teepee, I could tell those two had been out again. "You're unshaven Meaker, and what's that around your neck? It's not Kings regs" I lifted it with the end of my crop as he looked up. "It's a cravat sir, they're all the rage in London". "Well it's not bloody London or a fashion show, and you look like a bloody sailor". I had bigger things to deal with, "Where's Bonkin and Schmuk?" I asked. Fang replied "Bonkin is in dispersal sir, I haven't seen Schmuk". "God help him". With that he arrived at dispersal, with all things a pair of nylons around his neck "Lipstick man? Lipstick? How can we fight Germany if you are in such a state. Now, Wait here". I came out with Bonkin, "You two take yourselves down to Biggin Hill and report to 'Spud' Taylor, he's running the show today for No.615. Now, like you Schmuk he's a yank but we won't hold that against him." Bonkin interjected "Can I take....", "No you can't take that bloody dog with you. Last time he pissed all over the undercart of Looky O'Shea in A flight of No.64, and next time he said he'd shoot him. Of you go right now." With that the pair took off for Kenley.

At 1530 the ladies at Uxbridge plotted a Jerry incursion in the North Sea and our bell rang to send a flight out to check it out. I scrambled B flight immediately and we watched them thunder down the runway into the blue. At that time we were put into 5 minutes readiness, the remaining Merlins fired up at Gravesend, the same happening at Kenley. Shortly afterwards we were all up and climbing hard, 50+ coming from Dover our way. "OK chaps, let's give Hitler what for". "A pants down thrashing, gloves on" came Teepee's reply. We met the Hun in Mid Kent heading to the wonderful factory at Rochester and hoping to strike Eastchurch again. I'm not sure whether they just have poor intel or if they have something against the His Majesty's Navy but striking a flying boat factory and Coastal Command aerodrome really isn't going to help. Still, I was happy that they had it wrong again and with that I said "Tally Ho" before rolling over from eight thousand feet advantage into the tail of the formation. I line up the port side of the formation, screaming downhill near vertically at 320mph before firing into the hapless crate without mercy. British firepower struck him across his back inflicting considerable damage and I hauled my mighty machine around for a second go. Looking around I was clear for this pass but I must've been caught blind as I heard a crackle of pings against my machine, and a searing pain in my right leg. "Drat, I'm hit" I said on the RT. I checked controls and my machine was fine, after all Sir Sydney Camm had designed her for this punishment. Levelling out I realised that I was surrounded by three Huns, I made two evasive turns, which hurt a lot. I was losing vision, I realised I had been hit above the eyes and blood was pouring over my face and I couldn't see properly. With the DOrniers getting away I decided it was time to get out. I radio'd my predicament, opened the canopy, rolled her over and jumped for it from angels 12, delaying opening my chute until angels 3. V6620 was unable to land vertically at 350mph on her own unfortunately, though I landing safely in a field. All was tranquil, the raging battle above now distant aside the odd motor at height and crack of machine gun. The Home Guard turned up 15 minutes later, I was shot at by an aging corporal who appeared to be in a heightened mood before calmed down by their commander Captain Mainwaring. I arrived back at Gravesend just in time for last orders at the Wattendon Arms amid huge cheers from the chaps who had started drinking thinking I may have bought it.

Spud took lead today giving me a break. Far less stressful when someone else is making the decisions!

I was leading blue section so I wasn't completely devoid of responsibility. As usual still needed a drink after making it back to Kenley!

As usual we were last off the ground after being held up by 64 but once airbourne we were vectored towards a large group of Hun bombers. Mandrel and Freema spotted them first and the brylcreem brigade actually got stuck in for once leaving us Hurri drivers free to get at the bombers. Blue section made multiple passes. My initial pass on the lead group did some pretty serious damage to one engine of a dornier but he kept going... I then went for the second group and fired a 3 second burst into the top rear of the dornier's glasshouse. No obvious damage but as I passed and looked back I saw him slowly rolling to the right and descending. Last I saw him he was pretty well vertical. I caught up with the 1st group again this time noting my first target was losing height and baron was on him. Flames erupt from his right hand engine and hes going down. I see him break apart. I selected my next target and myself and baron shot him full of .303. I think the weight of all that lead was causing him problems as he also started to descend streaming all kinds of fluid... Last seen trying to head back to France but losing height. Pretty sure he went in.

Takeoff from Kenley as Blue 2 with Section leader Luke and Maltloaf as Blue3. Contact with bombers and 109's over Canterburry region. Battle went west inland. Dived on a 109 and fired some shots after him without seeing hits. Enemy dove away and I did not follow. Formed up with blue flight again and patrolled the area giving assistance to squadron-mates and hurricanes. Witnessed the crash of one 109 over Manston bay after being chased by Spitfires. Pilot bailed out. Returned to Kenley and landed avoiding a convenient parked Hurricane center on both runways.

Airborne with the chaps from Kenley, we were soon heading NNW towards Gravesend in a steady climb. 11 Grp RDF alerts increasing as we crossed 501's homefield, we were to expect something big heading our way. With a mass of bombers nearing us from below, thier escorting snappers crossed our line co alt and the show was on. Both my OCs expertly leading thier sections into the fight, I could hear my boys dispatching enemy bf-109s one by one. Had a good gun run on a 109 myself, the fool attempted to climb high after bouncing a hurricane and didn't notice me coming in after him in hot pursuit. Popped him near the top causing white glycol and grey smoke to belch from his engine compartment. He dove to evade and so I let him go. His aircraft looked like it wouldn't be taking him far. One probable submitted.

2 Do17s now crossed my 10 low, lining up on target which was apparently the short factory. I dove fast onto the port most aircraft and fired hard into his left engine. Looking over my shoulder, I was astonished to see the complete engine, ripped from the mounts, trailing fire and smoke as it dropped away towards the ground. The dornier banked left, dropped altitude and escaped my view. I now concentrated on the second bomber but disengaged as a friendly hurricane poured him full of lead. I claim the first one destroyed.

The majority of 64 squadron, now thinned over a 20 square mile area west of Canterbury needed to reform. The fight had taken a section near Manston airspace and I recieved R/T confirmation on multiple bandits, low over the aerodrome. I ordered OCs A and B to reroute thier sections east , overwhelming the hun in the process as we reformed low over RAF Manston. After having taken out the last hun in the area, 64 reformed, heading west to RTB Kenley.

I am happy to report that we took no casualties on this day. One pilot bailed safely, his aircraft losing a wing while "enthusiastically" merging with an enemy bomber.

Today I would be flying in blue section, with Random leading,Baron as blue2 and me blue3.The squadron Leader was Spud.We had to wait awhile for No64 to take off

Panta Squadron formed up,took off,and shook out, again in record time.we were given a intercept course for a huge formation of bombers[Do17's],the Squadron leader brought us in right on the button.Blue1 wished us good luck and called Tally ho!,and down we dived.I picked out a do17 on the far right of the formation we attacked and saw hits,i broke right to come back for another go ,when I heard a Hurricane break call over the RT,lowering the nose and making a hard turn to right I saw a Bf109 flash past me going hell for leather under the bomber formation. Two more passes later I had shot up 2 more bombers[they weren't going home] before running out of ammo, also I got hit and had received a "small fuel leak"for my trouble.I was ordered to RTB and on the way back hooked up with the rest of blue section. We all landed back at Kenley.

Claims.
