Squadron: No. 111 Squadron
Squadron Code: JU
Pilot Name: Sgt Larry
Type: Hurricane Mk 1 100 oct
Marking: L for London
S/n: P3875
Time: 12.00
Date: 16 Aug 1940
Base: Biggin Hill

After 2 Sorties with No. 501 Sqn I moved to a other Hurricane Sqn. No 111 Sqn. the "Treble One". We placed at Biggin Hill and I tought "What a mess here at Biggin!" No 501 Sqn + No 111 Sqn were taxing at the same Time and when I reached my Place (Blue 3,JU-L), next to Sqn Ltr Teepee (JU-M) a Hurricane (SD-U) rushed trough the Formation. "Well, it have to be here like that way!" I`m wondering.
Image

Then the order to take off. Suddenly my Hurri broke away hard backbord. Wingtip touched the Ground and crashed.
Image

Jumped out the plane and took another Hurricane. Still with cold engine I took off and tried to reach the Hurricane-Wing. After a while I saw the Formation but I couldn`t close the gap. Then I found myself alone again high over Selsey. "Your still here Blue 3 ?" asked Sqn Ltr Teepee. "yes, try to find the squadron!" my answer. Mauf said "well, try to stay alife, hi hi hi.." and at this moment TAK TAK TAK "Herman Göring knocked at my Door". I got hit! No Chance. I bailed out and while I`m sailing downwards I annoyed me that my Mission that Day was totaly broken.

SD-U, what a bastard. My apologies, we were rushing to scramble, there was not much space left between the back of Mandril and first vic of Wagon I am afraid. Yellow 2 had no space at all and had to take of on the right of the runway. My sincere apologies about the chaos, I was not on comms with you No.111 guys.

Made 5 passes on group of Stukas, Hitting a different enemy each time. Caused light damage to all, except for third pass when I got hits into a Stuka and he fell away from the formation. Other Hurricane had attacked the Stuka as well, hence a shared probable.

Attacked the second wave of bombers, the JU88's making one pass with the little ammo I had left. Just to add to my worries the bombers took out my engine, so had to coast down to Tangmere. Landed just before the JU88s below the crap out of it.

Claims:
Damaged 4 x Ju87, 1 x JU88
Destroyed: 0
Probable 1 x JU87 (Shared with Other 501 Hurricanes)

Losses:
Pilot: OK
Plane: Belly landing at Tangmere

"Oh bloody hell, not Stukas again," I groaned into my facemask. "As if today wasn't going badly enough."

August 16th had indeed started in poor form. After Jerry gave our airfield a pasting on the 15th we had been pulled back to Biggin Hill, but on arrival I found out that a number of the 501 chaps had been reassigned to 111 squadron and were having their aircraft hastily repainted. I hadn't known them for long, but somehow their sudden loss from our ranks made the future seem even more uncertain than usual.

Without Teepee to handle our flight assignments things were a little chaotic, and in the end Blue Section was made up of just me and Dave. I was glad to be flying alongside him again - at least it gave a semblance of normality - but neither of us had led a flight before. I'd been with 501 for a week longer than Dave but his commission predated mine and so, just like Lt. Bromhead deferring to Lt. Chard at Rorke's Drift, I accepted the 'Blue 2' position and followed Dave to the active.

As we began to taxi R/T came alive with news of the incoming Hun hordes, causing 111 squadron to jump the tit a bit. By the time Gold and Blue Sections made it to the runway 111 were tight up behind Bonkin's Green Section, so I ended up taking off from the grass. I barely managed to squeeze my starboard wingtip past the control tower, and was rattled enough that after takeoff I managed to knock my undercarriage control back into neutral before the wheels were fully up. After half a minute of struggling to keep up with Dave I realised my mistake, and got up to speed just in time to buzz the 64 chaps at Kenley.

We made our way in loose formation towards Selsey Bill. Despite having our eyes peeled we had to loop back around to the west before we made contact with the enemy, a formation of two dozen Ju87s escorted by 109s. Red and Gold Sections took off after the snappers, whilst Green and Blue dived on the bloody Stukas. Why did it have to be Stukas? In my last three meetings with them I'd managed to inflict quite some damage, but on each occasion my aircraft had been heavily damaged or destroyed, despite the Hawker boffins' best efforts to make us Hun-proof. Still, at least they were churning out aircraft quickly enough to get me back in the fight each time, despite the sour look on WingCo's face every time I had to explain why I'd come home in a bus.

Blue One attacked the leftmost Stuka, but I had to jink to avoid one of my squadron mates and ended up piling rounds into the lead plane of the rightmost vic. I got a good few satisfying thuds and flashes from her and set her venting before pulling up and away and chasing after Dave.

Lining up for a second pass I saw one of the Stukas erupt in flames as the 111 boys did their stuff, then followed Dave in towards the leftmost vic again. His shells set the port wingman burning, so I centred my sights on their leader and let rip! Bits flew all over, but he stubbornly refused to blow up, so I broke off high and followed Dave again.

On my third pass I was thrilled to see Stuka's burning and falling from the sky all over. Revenge is obviously a motivation more suited to your continental types than to a true-blooded Englishman, but I won't deny I felt a grim satisfaction at the wholesale destruction of these planes which had fuelled so many of my nightmares. As my .303s ripped into another Hun fuselage they started to drop their bombs into the sea, well short of any possible target. Whatever else happened today, 501sqn had spared at least a part of the good green earth of Blighty from a Bosch pounding!

By the time I squared up for a fourth run in the Stuka squadron was down to eight aircraft. I could see the snappers were beginning to close in a little above me, but suddenly the spits of 64sqn were in amongst them, so I pressed on with my attack. The leader of the rightmost remaining vic found himself riddled with DeWilde. I could see the gunner slumped over, and assume the pilot was in a similarly ventilated condition as the plane rolled and began to plummet towards the channel. I claim this as a probable kill.

There were now only six Stukas left, so rather than loop all the way around and miss the final slaughter I cut back across their flight line and made a transverse attack - a mistake as it turned out, because I only managed light damage to one plane before looping back out to the West.

Cutting back around I could see only three Stukas left! I lined up an oblique shot at the nearest (that is to say leftmost) Hun, only to see my tracers miss his tailplane by inches and go ripping into the next plane along! I kept my finger down and saw my tracers turn red as my guns emptied into the fuselage of this slightly unexpected target. The last few rounds set the cabbage-eater venting, and I turned away low to the northwest.

Without thinking, I began to come around again as though I could still do more damage. Only the sight of a 109 flashing past my right shoulder in pursuit of a Spit brought me to my senses, and I dived away once more towards the coast. I heard the WingCo on R/T announcing that his engine had died and he was tying to make for the airfield at Ford, and so decided to head the same way myself.

Touching down I could see a Hurricane with a hole blown clean through the fuselage aft of the canopy, and with a strain I could just make out the letters SD-Z on her side. Sliding my canopy back I shouted over to her, "Bloody hell old chap, bit of a close scrape there, eh?" The pilot lifted up his goggles and I recognised him as Flying Officer Bonkin. He glanced over his shoulder towards the gaping hole, well out of sight of course as he was still strapped in to his cockpit, and then grinned at me. "Nonsense old boy, nothing a bit of paint won't sort out. Those piffling Jerry guns can't do real damage to a wonderful crate like the Hurricane! I've just had the chaps here at ford give her a new tank of fighting juice and a few rounds of DeWilde, so I'm heading back up for more sport. You coming?" And with that he was off, back to give the Bosch a good old 501 thrashing. Terrific chap!

Since I had no battle damage I had no excuse for loitering on the ground, so I took a few gallons of 100 oct and whatever 303 they could scrounge up, and before long I too was climbing hard to get back into the fight. Sadly, by the time I got up to altitude the Hun had had enough for the day and slunk off home to their French whores. I tootled around for a while but eventually decided to make my way back to Biggin. It was truly a lovely day for flying, and I was more than a little sorry to arrive and have to think about landing. Dave was doing some flight testing over the field so I had an audience, but I managed to grease the landing and Blue Section were soon parked up back in the same sunny spots we had left less than two hours before. Dave's crate had a couple of bullet holes, but E for Edward was in pristine condition. Can't wait to tell WingCo that I've brought one back...

I must go up to the skies again, to the peace of silent flight, To the gull’s way, and the hawk’s way, and the free wings’ delight;
And all I ask is a friendly joke with a laughing fellow rover, And a large beer, and a deep sleep, when the long flight’s over.
