Date: 08/16/1940
Time: 1700 hrs.
Base: Kenley
Type: Hawker Hurricane
Marking: M for Mike
Serial number: Z2703

General Report

Took off from Kenley as Green Leader of Green Section, flew top cover over the enemy bombers, searching for snappers, until the Squadron Leader gave me permission for our section to engage. On doing so,shot down one He111 as soon as we had made contact with the enemy, and then tried to dodge the enemy crossfire which was horrendously accurate.

I could hear many of my squadron suffering from this crossfire,so I disengaged to get a better position, whilst doing so,I’m pretty sure I knocked down another enemy bomber as he was burning from end to end,and was going southwards, but can’t be 100%,that he crashed,so I am only going to claim a probable.

After running out of ammunition I made for base, landed and parked up.

Squadron: No.111 (Fighter) Squadron
Squadron code: "JU"
Pilot name: Sqn Ldr Teepee
Date: 16th Aug 1940,
Time: 17:00
Base: Biggin Hill
Type: Trusty Hawker Hurricane Mk 1A
Marking: "M for Marvel"
Serial number: P3671

Synopsis:

No. 111 (Fighter) Squadron had acquitted itself well on its first mission on Ops. The Boss had sent a congratulatory signal across the airfield and I was pleased that we had been able to give the Hun a well deserved, trousers down with gloves on, Damn good thrashing! There were a few sore heads at the morning brief, the next day. I had decided that Biggin Hill should consolidate our win by taking on the Kenley Wing with a spot of cricket, but the Boss was too busy with running the show and decided we would be better spent reducing the Hun to Ashes instead. Oh well, there’s always tomorrow.

Wagon would provide 7 aircrew to the Biggin Wing, today. We had received another pilot fresh from training, Sgt Sokka. This Scandinavian aviator had decided to join the RAF when he saw the damage Fritz was doing to Blighty and was keen to lend a hand. I decided he would fly with Red Section as Red 3 joining Sgt Ratty as Red 2. The fearless PO Sabre was to lead the Reds and he was already waiting at morning brief to let his Section know of his plans how to deal out the DeWilde to the Hun. I was leading Blue Section with Sgts Mauf (Blue 2), ‘Quiet’ Larry (Blue 3) and Ninja (Blue 4) as my trusty wingmen.

We strapped into our trusty Hurricanes late afternoon and waited for the inevitable call from the tower. Our awesome machines were lined up when we saw a rogue ambulance heading across the airfield in a decidedly uncontrollable and erratic fashion, reminiscent of a 64 Sqn Spittie I had once seen flying overhead. Thinking this might have been a sore loser from the recent rugby sevens we had played against 64 Sqn, I warned the chaps to beware. I was too late. The bounder clipped both me and ‘Quiet’ Larry as he careered across the grass rendering our awesome machines useless. The Boffins at Hawkers had designed the mighty Hurricane to survive rough treatment on the ground but this was beyond the limits that even they could predict. ‘Quiet’ Larry and I quickly strapped into the Sqn spare machines and I made a mental note to see OC 64 Sqn when we returned and comment on how not to be a bally sore loser!

We launched and as we climbed in our incredible machines we headed down the coast towards the Littlestone area to meet the Hun, head on. As we approached the South Coast there was a shout from Mauf, ‘Bandits at 12 o’clock’. Eagle eyed as ever, our sharp shooting jockey has spotted a large formation of He111s heading towards us, slightly lower altitude. I elected to lead the attack on the right side of the formation and radioed that we would attack from above and behind. ‘Tally Ho’ I cried and we sped like demons after the black crossed harbingers of doom. I fired at the left engine, of the first Hun to fill my gunsight, with a deadly DeWilde stream of lead and fire. The wing erupted into a satisfying broth of oil and flames as the doomed vessel dropped from the sky. I saw it strike the ground (I claim 1 x Destroyed he111) and then turned my attention to his verminous colleagues. The rest of the chaps were dealing out their own deadly deliveries and I could hear the excited cries of Mauf and Ratty as their victims left the party on a one way ticket to oblivion. I turned towards another lumbering giant and let him have all eight barrels of a Browning salvo. This machine also lurched downwards and I chalked another probable victory to my incredible Hurricane.

It was then that a cry came over the radio that pesky Me109s were in the area determined to spoil our party. I climbed to join the rest of my colleagues who were skirmishing with the Hun at altitude. I robustly sprayed a passing fighter with some lead before my tracer turned from yellow to red, indicating I had but 20 rounds of DeWilde to deal out. I then radioed my intention to break from the fray and headed my marvel machine back towards its home at Biggin Hill. I heard that the fearless Sgt Ninja had jumped from his steed but safely made his way home. Mauf and ‘Quiet’ Larry both joined me heading home leaving Ratty and Sokka, our new tourist, to stay and take the fight back to the Hun. I landed at Biggin Hill, my machine fault free, and watched as Mauf and ‘Quiet’ Larry landed not long behind me. We then met up with PO Sabre who had departed the party a little earlier with machine gun damage to his unbelievable machine.

We each briefed the Sqn Adj and were amazed, again, that we had dealt the Hun a severe blow for the loss of none of our squadron personnel. We headed down to the Mess to meet up with the other heroes from 501 and 615 Squadrons who repeated their stories of heroic achievement. I challenged my trusty old mates ‘Bonks’ Bonkin and ‘Meaks’ Meakers to a game of ‘Hunt the Hun’ with darts and the night progressed. The Badgers was flowing well and we managed to salvage a few pianos from the local Army detachment Nissen Huts. The night was starting to be another night of celebration and I felt the need to reach for my trusty four-string before the Boss turned up and joined in the thrash. ‘Badgers all round’ someone shouted and there was another stampede for the bar!

It was while I was at the Bar that I met a nice young filly who turned out to be the other daughter of the Mayor of Westerham, from just down the road. She said that her
Sister had enjoyed herself so much that she couldn’t sit down for a couple of days and suggested that her sister visited the Mess instead. It turned out that she was interested in astrology and she asked me if I wanted to look at her lucky charms. I said that I couldn’t believe my luck and that I would love to see her charms and try my luck a little bit more. I suggested we stop by the Station Gymnasium to open the bottles of wine. I don’t remember anything alse after that.

Synopsis:
Been recently transferred to No.501. A lot of restructuring was going on. Pilots being transferred to all kind of squadrons. 501 found its new home in Biggin Hill. Not the worst place of them all. However it came very sudden and I was sad to leave my squad mates and my Spitfire behind. But the Wing Commander wanted me around as his adjutant. No.64 is in good hands with my former section-mate Maltloaf being promoted to deputy Sqn Commander. Now they will cover my ass and I have no doubt they will do their best.
Driving the bus felt a bit funny and unfamiliar at the beginning, despite the fact it is similar to the Spitfire. Robo, the golden boy, as they call him, gave me some good advice before I had to jump into combat with that kind of equipment. Overall I have to say I was nicely welcommed in the new Squadron. I was suspecting they would be sceptical to have a Spit-pilot around, but they are real gentleman and I only had to endure one or two jokes while introducing myself.
Only that dog, Nigsy or whatever they call it, makes some big circles around me. I was told it has an aversion against Spitfires. I have no problem with that since I'm not at all a dog-person which roots in a childhood-trauma.
We were called to scranble after No.111, who share Biggin Hill with us. I was assigned to fly in Robos section, Yellow 2. Shortly after takeoff my engine took damage and I retured to Biggin Hill. Taking a spare Hurricane I scrambled once again but had lost contact to my Squadron.
I saw the bomber group south of my position on a westerly heading shortly after being airborne. I informed my squadron and climbed in a large cirlce behind them. After a while their escorts had a look at me and two 109's were zipping past my canopy and turning into my six. I took this as an opportunity to dive onto the Bombers; no reason to get engaged with the 109's. I made a quick pass on one He-111 peppering both his wings and engines. Breakig right I heard a loud bang and on hun was zooming up behind me. Despite checking my six regularly during my dive he sneaked upon me.
Checking my instruments revealed no damage. So I continued to attack three Bombers that had seperated from the main group. Bunny and Dave were already on their run on them too and the first Bomber went already down in flames. My pass did no damage at all due to bad aiming. Howerver Dave set him alight shortly after my pass.
I noticed a small stream of some liquid from my left wing close to the wing root. Robo ordered my RTB after I informed him about that fact. So I returned to Biggin Hill and landed there safely.

Attacked the rear most group of bombers with the rest of Green section. Hit the aircraft in the middle of the three, taking out one of his engines and getting good hits onto his starboard wing. Made another pass on a lone He111, getting a few more hits a few minutes later. Headed towards the coast to chase down the larger formation of bombers, but before I got there, I was intercepted by three 109s. In the ensuing battle, I got passing shot into one, but nothing serious. I then got jumped from behind by a fourth 109, and he took of my wing. Sliding the canopy back, I jumped out at floated down to earth.

Synopsis:

Took off in Green Section with Dave (Green 3) and Bully (Green Leader), orders to head to Littlestone where enemy bombers had been spotted. By the time our squadron was up, the enemy were at Guildford we spotted them. Following Bully in, we approached from their 6 o'clock position, a line of He-111s. As we gained distance, they split and performed defensive manouvers. 109s were spotted behind the second group, so they had escorts. We decided to risk one pass at least, to see what their escorts would do. Bully and I went for the group peeling to the right, I gained hits on one as I flew past - climbing I could make out three streams of fuel venting from both wings. Rolling and coming down on another in the same group I managed to get hits into the second target, causing his starboard engine to leak glycol - he dropped slowly from the formation, struggling to keep up with their erratic flight paths. As I circled, looking for the next target, and looking for the 109s, I witnessed Bonkin setting a 111 alight.

Mauf was having a bash at the last target I'd hit, I was on his six. He broke off and it was my turn again - more hits into the same engine. By this time we were all scattered, with the Osprey heading off to the main group of bombers on their way to Dungeness. We decide to give chase, to help out and regroup. As we made our way, we flew over a group tangling with some 109s lower than us. We took more evasive moves, trying to get a bead on them, but after about five minutes of swerving we decided to continue our course to regroup near Dungeness. As we flew, I took hits from behind - they must have gained on us from in the sun. I took a hit to my right arm, must have been dangling outside the amour plating, but the engine bore the brunt of it. Oil filled the windscreen, with no engine and hit, I slid back the canopy and took the decision to bale out.

After a long and sickening free-fall, my parachute eventually opened and I sailed down, gracefully plopping into a small brook, up to my knees.

As I struggled to bundle the silk up with one mangled arm, a ruthlessly efficienct ASR warden, who happened to be driving past on her way to the coast, spotted me. Without blinking, she jumped from her vehicle, waded into the brook, and yanked me free of the mud - dragging me by my hair to the shoreline, three feet distant from where I'd landed so unceremoniously. I brushed myself down with my good hand, and noticed I managed to get her blouse horribly wet and muddy in the rescue melee. I made a comment about how cold it apparently must be, and we set off to find the nearest pub in which to dry out, and swap telegram addresses.

Synopsis
Led an attack (sloppy seconds) on the remnants of a formation of He111’s, damaged a few, one probable but then got bounced and took a glancing blow to the temple from a Hun bullet. Managed to land safely but the red stuff was in continually in my eyes.

Full Report
The mighty No.501` was in the blue again for the third time this day. Jerry wasn’t letting up that was for sure and this time they seemed to be coming further in land towards London.

The boss was leading us and clearly from the R/T the other squadrons from the Kenley wing were seeing a lot of action. We were going to clear up after up!

Near Guildford we spotted them – about 12 He111’s. The boss hadn’t clocked them so flying as his Red 3 (Red 2 had gone missing somewhere), I took over the lead and led No.501 in a diving attack. Very quickly afterwards the WngCo signalled he had seen them and started to bark instructions at us – at which, being committed to my attack, I unfortunately wasn’t paying much attention to. I made a couple of passes, damaging one and setting the port engine well and truly ablaze on a second.

My embarrassment and guilt kicked in though when I heard the WngCo announcing that he was commencing his attack “You with me Bonks? We’re going in on this group of eight -follow me in.”
“Oh bugger” I muttered to myself – “Where the hell is he?” Well out to the South I could see a lone Hurricane attacking a large formation of Heinkel’s with what looked like a Staffel of Me109s above. I immediately broke off, pulled the tit and started in his direction but I could see a few of the specs above start to dive down.

The rest of No.501 were having their own problems with a handful of 109’s but at least we were together – the WngCo seemed to be on his own – and I should have been with him. Very shortly we heard the WngCo announce “I’ve got three 109’s here and they’ve taken a fancy to me.” And very shortly after this “Those blasted rotter’s have got a lucky shot to my engine! I’m going to have to bail – first one back line up the Badgers – good luck chaps.”

I couldn’t help but feel bad. Surely the Boss’ loss was down to my own selfishness at needing to give the Hun a good spanking – rather than sticking by his side. There wasn’t much I could do about it now so together with the rest of No.501 we headed South to carry on chasing after the bombers.

The Hun Me109’s were doing well today though. We lost Bunny to a bounce that none of us saw and he was quickly followed by Bully. Both got out OK. I was now with Danny boy Broadsword, Dave and Robo and we continued the chase – although very much on the alert.

Then another bounce came. Whilst the others took care of the pesky fighters I went after the bombers but just as I was about to start firing I too got bounced. The bullet must have come around the armour plate and it gave me a glancing blow off the temple. Wiping the blood from my eyes I poured the last of my ammo into the hapless He111 and then immediately broke off my attack.

Luckily for me the Jerry fighters did not follow and I managed to land safely at Shoreham, before passing out in the cockpit through blood loss.

Definitely did not turn out so nice!
