I normally have a gut feeling just before a mission, and today I felt strangely uneasy. 5 Staffel took off in good order and headed for our routine patrol over the channel. As we approached England, my wingman had fell behind and I found myself flying solo as our Staffel made initial contact between Deal and Manston. As the comms filled with chatter, my own radio began to misbehave.

Within 10 minutes my plane was also behaving strangely, and soon my windscreen was blackened with oil. I had constantly checked my instruments and my six had remained clear. My earlier gut feeling was slowly transforming into the harsh reality of a ditched plane mid channel. Fortunately, U-N0wh0 our faithful pick up sub, surfaced on my port side. Submariners are a jolly sort, not too keen on personal hygiene, but nice beards if you like that sort of thing.

We hear rumours of improvements to our beloved 109's. This is long overdue, and should keep us one step ahead of the British ballerina fighters. Till next time Kameraden..

Looked grand. Dots of airplanes covering the sky. Glorious Luftwaffe - powerful, mighty, and gleaming fighters.

Got airborne and quickly found or got found by my ever present wingman Burma. After weeks of practice, our Rotte stays together very well. We soon saw our wingy Mr lee and formed up behind him. Burma sighted contacts high and we climbed to check them - soon realizing there were allot of those suckers so we tucked tail and powered south.

Hearing calls from Lee we turned north and at nearly 600 KPH arrived at Manston. What a glorious sight. 2 Spits or Hurries we quickly engaged. I believe I got a few cannon hits as one passed in front of my nose. Quickly many many more RAF planes arrived.

Looking back I saw one on my tail but the incredible Mr Grey quickly got him off of me (confirming his kill). Then like 2 swans in perfect unison we climbed and continued our engagement. Hearing Burma landed at Manston and Grey going down I turned for the channel with the entire RAF on my tail. I dove for a pass through the hangers at Manston (practiced all week) Bullets smashed into my plane as I approached the first hanger and so I skipped showing off. I extended quickly out running them but just had to turn back....whoops got one bullet right through the engine and the engine instantly died (1st time that has ever happened to me).

Bailed out over the channel, swam back to base doing the back stroke and eating wiener schnitzel.

Taking off from Marquise West we got engines running and waited orders to start moving. When the orders came I proceeded to lead Schwarm 2 out along the taxi way to to form up behind Schwarm 1 on the runway.
It was a tight fit back but it was looking good and in good time.
One pilot from Schwarm 2 decided to cut right across the taxi way from the parking and nudge his way in front of me and Schwarm 1.
This resulted in me having to swing the nose and take off skew. This had a knock on effect behind me and resulted in 2 aircraft crashing before wheels up.
This is getting really old and we are better than this.
The next time it happens I will shoot him down myself.

The resulting chaos was that once we were airborne Schwarm 2 was all over the place again.
We all just followed the group out over the channel and once at alttitude I moved to the back of the pack and ordered Schwarm 2 to all move out to the right of the group.
This worked really well and it was going to be fairly easy from there to regroup.

Contacts were spotted low and we were closest and had free reign.
We dove in to attack but either I was not concentrating, or the new E3 machine got up a head of steam faster than my trusty E1, however when I started firing I had no response from the control surfaces. I suspect this was pressure compression due to airspeed but I really did not think I was going that fast
Ended up colliding with the target.

KIA.
Sorry lads.

After sneaking off the base last night and having one too many with the ladies. I woken to Unteroffizier Vlerkies throwing a bucket of ice water all over me, to wake me up..... "Its patrol time ZaP! Furer Pitti has call us up! Get dressed!"
stumbling out of bed I got dress and made my way to the briefing room. After sleeping through most of the briefing, we got our planes prepped and ready for flight.

After getting airborne and swarm 2 was scattered, we slowly formed up. Of com's I heard contact low hurricanes. At this point Unteroffizier Vlerkies gave the order to descend and attack. As I went in over the radio came the call "Vlerkies is going down!" I froze for a second.... It cant be.... Those bastards!" snapping to my senses I closed the gap, engaged a hurricane and watched it explode in front of me, as I turned to gain altitude I spotted another Hurri trying to get away back to England. Not today... I dove in and light him up, as he went down he's wreck just clipped my left wing. I lost control and bailed out over the channel.

Not the best thing to do with a hang over.... Now I have to swim back.....

PS: I can confirm 2 kills for Uofr Grey

Departed Marquise with schwarm 1, flying on the Staffelkapitans wing. Over the Channel near Manston, contacts were spotted, a formation of Defiants reportedly, though I didn't lay eyes on them myself, concentrating on staying with the leader as he turned towards the E/A. Suddenly, out of nowhere it seemed, a Spitfire appeared and I was soon in trouble, the Tommy on my tail. I took a few hits, not doing any significant damage, before Lt. Atreides engaged the Spitfire and forced him to break. While I extended and regained altitude, I heard Atreides calling that he had taken damage and was forced to ditch in the Channel. With a sinking (pun soooo intended) feeling I headed to the area off Deal at 4000m, hoping the Seenotdienst were on hand to pick up the Staffelkapitan.
I soon spotted a bogey a little higher, on my 1 o'clock, too far away to identify. Before I could close, I saw a Spitfire on my 10 o'clock only a few hundred metres away. The Tommy seemed equally surprised at seeing me, as I rolled my plane left, the Spitfire turned towards me right into my Revi! I snapped a burst at him, and saw bright flashes from the impact of my shells on th E/A. He was still flying and fighting though, and we danced a little, but when I lost sight of him, I thought better of it and nosed down and extended towards France, levelling out at 2000m and heading back in a turning climb to the battle area.
At this time Gruppenkommandeur Pitti ordered the remaning aircraft to egress toward France, so I lingered mid-channel, in case my comrades required support as they returned. However, I saw no-one, And when Pitti again ordered RTB, I set course for Marquise, and on final was elated that I was for once getting back not wet, unfortunately all those bails outs and ditchings have had a detrimental impact on my landing technique, as I misjudged my height and snapped the landing gear as I came down to0 hard.
The crew chief was pretty decent about it, saying there was quite a few salvageable parts he could use as spares. The couple of cases of liberated French wine I turned over to him might have had something to do with that.

Due to chaos on take off I got separated from unit and was not able to re-group. I opted to RTB instead. Landed safely.

Mission debrief for II./JG26:

Combat patrol on 19th July 1940.

Gruppe II of JG26 started for a combat patrol over the english channel the afternoon of 19th July 1940. They encoutered and engaged a group of Defiant aircraft east of the english coast but were soon after attacked by a large group of Hurricane and Spitfire fighters. In the following battle 5 enemy aircraft were shot down, however unconfirmed reports claim 4 more enemy aircraft destoyed. In an attempt to suppress enemy air superiority parts of II./JG26 attacked Manston airfield and could inflict damage to aircrafts on the ground.

8 aircraft were lost during the battle, 2 were able to return damaged. Uffz Vlerkies, OGefr Zap, Gefr Lee, HptGefr Need and HptGefr Maalek did not return from their mission. The bitter loss of such formidable pilots shall inspire us to fight back in their honor.

Abschlussbericht, II./JG26:
