I took off at 1355 with Unterfeldwebel Wiesel as my wingman. The 6. Staffel shortly after. The 4. and 5. Staffel followed shortly after.
After assembling near our airfield we headed off towards Calais to rendezvous with the first wave of Stukas. Our task was to escort them to their target and then stay over the enemy ship convoy and keep the skies clear for the following waves of bombers.
We met the Stukas in time and arrived over the enemy ships at 1477. No enemies in sight. The Stukas went in for attack and fly back home without being attacked by the enemy.
All three Staffeln of my Gruppe started orbiting the area then and brought them into good position for the attack on the enemies which soon should arrive to attack the next waves of our bombers.
At 1426 the second Schwarm of the 5. Staffel engaged some Spitfires in land of Dover. I head towards them with the 6. Staffel. We were in a slight climb when the Spitfires came towards us and engaged us over Dover, at approximately 5000m. I ordered everyone to dive out towards the sea to get away from them.
I dived, together with Unterfeldwebel Wiesel close on my 5 o'clock, about 2000m down and then climbed up again over the sea. We were clear. But when I looked towards Dover, I saw that only the half of the Staffel had followed my orders. The others went into a turn fight with the Spitfires and soon I saw Hauptgefreiter Maalek falling down in flames.
I shouted at them over radio to get their asses away from their while Wiesel and me headed back to help them.
We managed to draw some of the Spitfires off and I damaged two Hurricanes in this dogfight right over Dover, at 1430. But, when checking my six, I saw two or three Spitfires closing in on Wiesel and me. We tried to get rid of them by diving out towards the sea. The opened fire on Wiesel and he shouted over the radio that he has been injured and his water radiator is leaking. The spitfires turned away and Wiesel was able to fly back to France.
Now, alone, I climbed back up over the ships where some more Stukas had arrived and several of my pilots were engaged in fight.
At 1433, I saw Unteroffizier DaHeld shooting down a Hurricane. It dived towards the sea with a lot of smoke and flames. This was directly over the enemy ships in front of Dover.
I grouped up with DaHeld and we attacked several Spitfires and Hurricanes in the next minutes. At some point I noticed Spitfires behind me, ready to attack. I tried to shook them of by diving into the thick cloud bank which was hanging over the channel. But no luck, they were still behind me. DaHeld and MarLeo saw this and tried to help me out while I was heading towards the French coast. All but one Spitfires turned away while I was flying full throttle at the deck. This last sucker was sitting at about 500m distance on my six.
By reaching the French coast at Wissant I started climbing. MarLeo and DaHeld were nearby. Now the Spitfire pilot must have noticed in which trouble he put him self and tried to fly back towards England. With my last 10 cannon rounds I ripped the Spitfire apart. While I was climbing up after the attack I saw the pilot bailing out. This was at 1444 over the sea close to Wissant.
Out of ammunition and fuel I flew back to our airfield together with DaHeld and Marleo. We landed at 1449. My trusty 109 was without any damage.
