0845Channel, DoverSpitfire-yes (MarLeo)
The day started early for my Gruppe. At 0800 we received orders to escort Bf 110 of EprGr. 210 towards Dover. The rendezvous was planned for 0830 over Marquise.
The mission was designated as a feint bomb raid. Only few 110s carried bombs. The main goal was to get the RAF into the air so that we can shoot them down.

At 0816 I took off together with the 6th Staffel. Unterfoffizier MarLeo was flying as my wingman. At 0825 I spotted the 110s near Maqruise, flying at 3km. A bit too early and thus the 4th Staffel was still in the take off process and couldn't catch up with the 110s in time.

The 5th Staffel was flying on the left flank and the 6th on the right of the Zerstörer. At 0830 we arrived over Dover. No sign of the RAF. The 110s splitted up and started to circle the Dover - Folkestone - Deal area. So did we. I gave the "Freie Jagd" order to all my pilots.

A few minutes later, while flying near Folkestone at 5km altitude, I spotted a squadron of Spitfires crossing us about 1500m below over the coast from Dover to Folkestone.
We dived into attack and I scored very good hits in the cockpit area on one of them. The pilot must have been injured, if not killed, but I hadn't time to watch if the Spitfire went down. So just a probable kill.
I instantly climbed up after the attack and joined up with MarLeo again. I looked down and saw that the Spitfires were scattered all around and some of them tried to get behind us.

We decided to disengage a bit towards mid channel to get back into a good attack position. This shook all but one of the Spitfires off of us. This one Spitfire was following us in about 800m distance. I climbed up and order MarLeo to hold course. The poor Spitfire pilot must have been a rookie since he kept on following MarLeo. I dived onto his six o'clock and gave it a full burst of my guns. The Spitfire started to stream liquid and one of its elevators was gone. MarLeo did an attack as well and I followed with my second attack on which I killed his engine. He was flying too low to be able to reach the coast with a dead engine so we left him alone. This happened at 0845 south of Dover over the channel. This victory is confirmed by MarLeo.

We regained altitude and attacked several Spitfires and Hurricanes in the Dover area during the next 10 minutes. Where I caused damage to at least to two more Spitfires.

At about 0900 I gave the order to return to base. So we set course towards France. But found out that mid channel about 3 to 5 enemy fighters had waited for us.
They tried to get shots on us but they weren't able to catch us.

When we arrived at the French coast I heard several of my pilots calling for help since they get under attack from these enemies as well. So MarLeo and me headed back to help them out. We found a 109 with water radiator damage that was surrounded by 5 Hurricanes. We went into attack. I heavily damaged one of them. That made them turn home and so did we.

I landed back at Marquise East at 0910. My 109 was undamaged.

My dearest Galy
It seems as if just an instant ago , a mere flick of an eye lash we were in Berlin at the Luftwaffe dinner , Dancing Wales , Laughing … The whole world was at our feet .
I drank so much Snaps , I have no idea how I found myself back in my bunk , awakened by my ground crew informing me that my bird is ready to go .
I must say, I was happy to see my beautiful E-1 parking next to the runway.
I have again volunteered to lead the 3rd schwarm with the consent of Her Unteroffizier Flyby.
I have yearned for the smell of burned gasoline, and the sound of the daimler-benz.
We were 3rd to form on the runway, takeoff and formation went rather smoothly , aside of a small mishap .
During the steep climb and turned I have made sure all schwarm members had both Rads open, and with 10% of flaps extended, all ready for the long slow steep climb .
25 minutes later our entire Schwarm was formed on the “bombers” left flank .
The last wave was slow, too slow for us to follow .
I have informed Her Stafflecapitan that we are moving to cover the first wave, all the time checking engine vitals when an oh too familiar cracking sound emerged.
I have hoped I was dreaming … but then my bird started to shake violently .
Too this second I do not know what made my engine give up .
I was managing it perfectly , ATA was fixed at 1.0 RPM was 2.2 both rads were fully opened .

I have informed Her Unteroffizier Flyby of my disposition and reported my status to Her Stafflecapitan .
Making my way back home , my mined wondered to you and the kids … final was smooth and calm as I have reved all the way down .
My engine finally gave up as my bird was still partially on the runway .
As Fritz (head of my ground crew ) was rushing over to the airfield I have toyed with the thought of having his heart for dinner .
Sure , I could have arranged a court-martial for him , but I need him for the next mission .
Later I have learned that I am was one of the lucky ones , as Flyby had to ditch , Krauss got hit over British mainland , and only Starry returned .
Kiss the kids for me , hug them as tight as you can .
I will see you soon, let’s say six in our pub, just after the war …

Rank: Oberleutnant
Unit: 5./JG26
Aircraft: Bf-109 E1
Markings: Black 3
Aerodrome: Hydrequent (Marquise East)
Pilot Status: OK
Aircraft Status: OK, RTB.

Summary:
0835-0840 Damaged 2 Hurricanes (around 5,5 km high over Canterbury) while they were engaging 110's . According to server messages 1 of them went down within a minute (maybe Spud), the other after a while. However no confirmed kills so –

Claims:
Damaged 2 Hurricanes

Report:

First time in a long time that I made it home. My plane was even completely undamaged.
5./JG26 was performing admirably. A record number of pilots of the 12 that took off made it back to base.

My Schwarm (me, Esri, Boyezee and Zalzam (lost him early because of hardware problems)) was in continuous combat and reforming, from the moment we were between Canterbury and Dover till our landing 45 minutes later.

We stayed at altitude in combat with Hurricanes. I damaged 2 of them who were engaging 110's, however I had no confirmed kills. We reformed over Dover after losing contact. Boyezee and I managed to find each other, however Esri was heavily damaged while on his own.
Afterwards we engaged Spitfires out to sea near Dover. Boyezee went low, I stayed high. He was soon followed by 2 Spitfires on the deck towards France. I dived down on them. The 2 Spitfires broke off and started to turn behind me. Boyezee in turn turned around to help me and the Spitfires disengaged.

Flying mid-channel the order was given to RTB. Starymruk of the 3rd Schwarm was in trouble so we headed looking for him. We however got intercepted by 2 Spitfires and had to dive towards the Cliffs of France. They broke off.
Starymruk managed to get back to France luckily. Boyezee and I stayed over the Cliffs of France for a while, protecting the 6th Staffel who were coming in followed by apparently some Hurricanes. The Hurricanes had disengaged, probably sensing a Schwarm of the 5th was waiting for them ;) , and the 6th was saved 8-)

Boyezee and I flew back to our base. While preparing for landing we noticed heavy flak. A Spitfire. We had no energy. Boyezee got hit by this Spitfire and was on fire for a few seconds, but luckily nothing serious got damaged. After some maneuvering we and a few other 109's managed to get behind him and he got destroyed close to our base.

We hereafter landed safely. Man, we of the 5th had a blast. 45 minutes intense action with the RAF on equal footing. :)

Formed up and took our assigned escort position. Schwarm Fuhrer Lee had engine trouble and was forced to RTB. Krass took over for him, and led us to t he troubled skies over Dover. Evasive action from an attacking Spit forced our flight to turn defensively into the attack, and very quickly it was every man for himself. I dove away from the furball, taking several bursts as I leveled out and headed back to France. My engine was losing coolant, and I was forced to maneuver against the plane on my tail; a Spit. The same one? One final barrel roll over the top and the Spit pulled off. I fired a burst though I knew I had no solution. Then, feet wet. The engine would run rough if I gave more than 1.4 throttle. I trimmed for slight nose-down, hoping any extra speed would lift the nose, and maybe add some height. I was too low to bail out. Slowly the plane took me up to 500 meters as the engine died. I went out, and landed maybe a couple of kilometers off shore. It was almost dark before a Luftwaffe rescue boat plucked me from the kanal. 60% fuel wound up being more than I needed.
