Aircraft: Bf 109 E-4

Pilot Status: OK, fished out of the channel
Aircraft Status: lost, crash landing on channel about 10 km in front of the French coast

The seconed mission today was an escort of Ju88 and He111 from Cherbourg towards harbours west of the Isle of wright.
We took of at 0910 from Theville and met up with the bombers at 0933 over Cherbourg at an altitude of about 3500m.

While approaching the Isle of Wright at an altitude of 6500m while flying behind and above the bombers we spotted a squadron of Spitfires slightly above us. They went in to attack and I gave orders to dive town towards the bombers to shake them of.
While diving I spotted several Hurricanes starting their attacks on the bombers. I called thed enemies out over the radio and went into the attack.

The Hurricane which I attacked turned away so I climbed up again. But there was another Hurricane following me. I was now at about 5000m slightly above the bombers and 20km west of the Isle of Wright. The Hurricance shot at me and damged my water radiator.

I instantly turned home and started to climb since I know that my engine will now only run for a few minutes. I tried to gliede back to France but I couldn't make it. I did a smooth landing on the water about 10km out of the french coast. This happend at 1010. After floating in the water for about 20 minutes, a rescue boat pulled me out of the water.

They offered me some Kognak and brought me back to my Gruppe's airfield.

After 1 hour flight, 5 seconds visual contact, 1 bullet to the watercooler and the glide home, the chute failed to open. if not, the pilot would have shot himself anyway.

Rank: Unteroffizier
Unit: 6./JG26
Aircraft: Bf 109 E-4

Pilot Status: Ok, enjoying tea and cupcakes from now on - bailed out north of Poole due to no control over ailerons and damaged water cooler
Aircraft Status: lost

After being surprised by a large Spitfire formation above us shortly before the coast I followed the bombers to Poole. I attacked one Hurricane from behind hitting it hard in the right wing and middle, shooting of the right aileron and destroying it's coolant system. It then went straight down in a 90° angle smoking heavily. I might have killed it's pilot. After that I returned to the bombers over Poole and saw them hit the harbor which then started to burn heavily. A few minutes later I positioned myself behind another Hurricane and got some shots on its left wing but it turned too hard and I lost it. A bit unaware I forgot to check my six and got some crucial hits from his wingman. With my ailerons disabled and both water radiators damaged I turned towards England and bailed out just north of Poole. No need to play lotto in the channel. Got a friendly greeting by some farmers and after having a smoke and drink with them was turned over to some gritty Tommies. Tea and cupcakes awaiting me now at Grizedale Hall. Next planned stations are Montreal, Smith's Falls, Ogdensburg, Mexico, Rio de Janeiro, Barcelona, Rome and back to Marquise to my beloved Erica (Image).

Since capture no victory claims!

Got hits on a Spitfire, but didn't see it go down. Got jumped over the water and took several hits while trying to get on the tail of another Spit. Started streaming and tried to save the plane and head for home. Disengaged and flew back to France. Made it all the way back to the area around Theville, but engined died. Tried to put her down in a field but flared to soon for landing and ended up stalling into the ground and died in a fire.

Schwarm got broken up by high altitude Spitfire Ia's. Wingman lost contact, was killed. I was shot down minutes after. Unfortunately, we had to all fly hung over after a long and industrious night at the local...ahem...nightly entertainment establishment. Herr Leutnant Reinhardt had a little bit too much schnapps to drink. Last we saw of him in the company of a...courtesan. I believe one of the others said her name was Monique or some other French nonsense. This morning he was a little bit unwell, not the typical hangover symptoms. The staffel medical personnel believe he may have either the clap or syphilis. He was held back from today's sortie due to medical tests.

The 5th Staffel was out in force again, 13 planes. We took up position behind the bomber fleet heading towards the Isle of Wight.

About 5 mins South of the Isle of Wight my Schwarm, me, Boyezee, Stig and Keroth, we're attacked by Spitfires. They unfortunately had a height advantage, but we kept our own for quite some time. After successfully fending off multiple attacks we were left with 2. One, Tyrone, managed to get on my 6 however and instantly pk'ed me. At the same time Stig was shot into flames by Fenris.

The dogfight went on 2 v 2, and Keroth on his first misison managed to down Fenris (confirmed by Boyezee)! Boyezee however then lost connection and Keroth got damaged and had to bail.

All in all a fun fight. On equal energy we probably would've pulled it of, but well, that's speculating. Great fight by the Spitfires and a very deserved win.
I guess that's the disadvantage of having to closely escort bombers: You're leaving the initiative to the enemy. I hope Göring will realize this and give us more freedom in our escort patterns in the future. Maybe we should just talk to him... :)

Pilot Status: Ok, managed to jettison the canopy and belly land into the Channel. In good spirits, sitting in my raft, awaiting the Kriegsmarine to pick me up.

Aircraft Status: lost, ditched in the Channel. Was approximately 5km, Southwest of the Isle of Wight. Sustained damage from enemy aircraft. Dove away, and managed to shake the pursuer. 1/2 way home across the Channel, the engine seized. Jettisoned the canopy at 500m, then ditched into water.

Pilot Status: Parachute opened landed in the Isle Of Wight

We took off and circled Theville, awaiting the bomber rendezvous,
Once we grouped up with the bombers at 3.5km we took a defensive position on the left wing of them and flew with them across the channel towards the Isle of Wight.

While flying with the bombers we slowed down and trailed behind them around 4.5km, we were getting close to the isle of white bay area and spotted contacts behind and above the bombers, Our Shwarm leader 5./JG26_grey notified us of this but by this time, I could see enemy spitfires above me and around me maybe some hurricane as well, but I could only identify the spitfire about 500 to 800 meters above me by his wings there were RAF fighters to my right also quite far out but I’m not sure if they had noticed me.

I throttled down and let them go in front of me, after they had passed I went into a climb, I reached about 5.5km and levelled off looking down off of my right wing, noticed a small fur ball,
So I dived in saw a contact headed towards his six o’clock and found him to be a 109, so I broke off him and went up and back down to find a spitfire.
I took a few shots on him and he broke to the right I went into his turn and fired a few more shots with no hits so I quickly levelled off and climbed,
I dived again onto him and got a good hit on his fuselage with cannon and mg and he broke and dived, don’t know what happened to him after that.

As I looked down again I saw another spitfire in formation with another 2 fighters heading west, so I dived on the trailing one which turned out to be a spitfire again he started heading south as I got to him,
I fired my Machine guns first I got a hit and he must of seen my tracers and broke right, I followed him and fired a burst of cannon and mg which I think missed.
He then levelled off and baited me to shoot him I took some shots at him and then I started taking fire on my six.
My target then went into a left hand climb, I followed him still under fire from the six, my radiator and elevator got hit but i still had elevator trim so I stayed with this spit for a good few minutes taking shots with cannon and having shells exploding around him very close, I then got a hit I think on his left wing with some MG fire, I then broke off of him and headed down towards the Isle of Wight where I bailed out.

After Action Report (AAR):

Today was my first official ACG 5./JG26 camp mission. The JG26 was out in good form...
Image

Take off was without incident and Schwarm2 stayed in a CCW flight pattern over the field until I formed up. KRASS was my RotteFurher today. FLYBY and LEE flew the lead flight. FLYBY has that voice of strong confidence. Im in good hands for sure.
Image

Our charge were the bomber groups, and soon we gained tally and covered our ugly duckies
Image

Following my element lead (KRASS) as he followed the flight lead
Image

Passing over and under our chicks as we seek to maintain combat speed and staying in tactical range
Image

Best made plans go to schiess as soon as it hits the fan... Hurries start to BnZ the bombers and we are ordered to engage Indians
Image

So... the battle ensued and our Schwarm was divided up as we chased of some bandits. LEE ordered us to a rally point left o f the bombers. Soon BUBI and LEE were a new rotte fighting pair, and FLYBY and KRASS were still in the large fur ball behind the bombers as they continued doggedly on.

LEE and I found some Hurries harassing the bombers in a BnZ profile. So we attacked them at their peak when they were slow. LEE got some hits and I did not finish off his target, instead sticking to lead like glue. Which end up being a good thing because the other Hurries hurried to the assistance of their stricken wingman and engaged us. I kept between them and my lead, as that's my wingman contract with my leader. We went a few rounds but were now out numbered and getting slow. I took some cockpit hits and when my a/c started the funky chicken dance, I told my lead that I was diving out of the fight. LEE continued on with some damage but got away and RTB to the sounds and smells of French ... um.. things.

I however got a new perspective on life and rode the silk elevator
Image

So fortunately for me, I was in friendly waters, and the U55 surfaced to give me a ride home. I did however have to pay for all the schnapps that KRASS had used up in previous sorties. We will have to square up another time.
Image

While the outcome was not what I had hoped, and theres a lot of room for improvement on my part, I have to say I very much appreciated the efforts put forth in the making of this Wing and the individuals in my Schwarm. As warm and jovial LEE would put it: "Welcome home". Yes, indeed. I think Ill keep these guys.

So endeth BUBI's first day on the job. That's all Ive got.

Im a (wet) dot....

Post Script:
Battle tested the Virtual Cockpit utility and interface to IL2-COD. Worked perfectly and was useful to look down at when my view was up in the canopy looking around. Was good to keep an eye on the engine condition and pitch clock.
