This was a scorching hot day in the channel , I was sweating buckets .
Our Schwarm was next to take to the air after Her Staffelkapitän .

Immediately at the beginning of the mission I have noticed that I have comm problems , and now all communications between our Schwarm and Her Staffelkapitän went through Flyby .

Kipping position after the slow bombers was a challenged throughout this long flight .
Finally we were over the target , and to my surprise the RAF was waiting for us at 7K .
At that point I told the guys to engage , Gods know there were plenty of targets .
After several unsuccessful engagements , where at most I got a few hits into a Hurri , I decided to re-form the Schwarm .
By that time Flyby had to bail , and Krauss was engaged .
Bubi managed to locate me and we re-formed and headed to cover the bombers returning home .
I suddenly heard Bubi informing me that he is hit and had to bail .
Apparently he placed himself between the enemy and myself .
I will recommend him to receive the Iron Cross .
Image
Not long after that after chasing an attacker away from the bombers I was suddenly hit from behind .
I managed to split S , and made my way back towards France with my attacker still on me .
Suddenly with no apparent reason he broke off .
I was left alone to make a safe landing in a friendly base .
I was trilled to hear Krauss announcing his landing in Theville in the wireless

Taxi'd & took off, formed with Lazann, Hindsight, and Martin as Schwarm 1. Orbited until bombers got feet wet then formed on them.
Held position until radio transmission reported Indianer at 6k positioned 7 oclock from the bomber formation. This might have been the high cover for the attack force as only moments later Hurricanes pushed on the close attack to the bombers. The Hurri's slowed to bomber speed and camped on the 6 with guns blazing. Multiple passes on the Hurris had minimal effect but finally one was venting and broke away....chased him a little to put in a coup de grace down to about 3k then broke off and returned to the bomber stream.....no kill was registered.
Returning to the bomber stream area I became immediately engaged with Spitfires lurking in the area....took some rounds but dove out south and cleared myself. Climbed back up to altitude in hopes of assisting the bombers on their return leg. Held position at 5k mid channel then agreed on comms to meet at South Isle of Wight with Casca and Bear. Rendevous was successful and moments later Casca id'd a Hurricane and Bear and Casca worked it over until it was down. I held top cover at 1500m until two spits rolled into the area. Circulated with them, tried to gain position....could not attain good position and the three of us slipped away south. Landed back at base, Theville.

"We in J52 were very inexperienced, in just two months, our strength fell from thirty-six pilots to four. We really wasted our fighters. We didn't have enough to begin with, and we used them in the wrong way, for direct close escort. We were tied to the bombers, flying slowly - sometimes with flaps down - over England. We couldn't use our altitude advantage nor our superiority in a dive. Of course, the Spitfire had a marvelous rate of turn, and when we were tied to the bombers and had to dogfight them, that turn was very important".

-Gunther Ball 8/JG52-

"We had been up since early in the morning, I was leading the 3rd schwarm of 5th staffel escorting the Dorniers to a shipping target in the Channel. Suddenly we were jumped on by a squadron of Spitfires, until we got our flaps up and increased speed we were no match for the RAF. I was hit and smoke bellowed from my plane, I tried to make it back with a safe passage, My instruments were out, so I switched my magnetos off every 2 minutes to cool my engine down, as soon as my speed got too low, I’d switched them on again. I was near the French coast when my bird said it’s final prayers, so I jettisoned my canopy in order not to get drowned, I crash landed safely into the sea and an Arado 196 picked me up when he saw the whole action. As soon as I landed with the Arado 196 I was ordered to go up again and escort Dorniers again. I was reluctant to do so, but you have to carry out orders, I was tired and would appreciate sleep, but that would only come after another two escort missions".

We took off From Theville airfield with a bit of trouble. Stig and me came up first we started to cirkle climb the airfield while we waited for Boyezee and Atriedes. When They joined us we continued the climp until we spotted the bomber where we started to zigzag climb over them to about 6K altitude, we lost Atriedes for a little while but quickly grouped back with him and continued.

We had just crossed over the bombers at about 6-7 K when we noticed a group of bandits following the bombers above us, we continued the climb to the side to cain altitude over them when suddenly 2 spitfires jumped us. We avoided them and started the dogfight.

After a bit of fighting Atreides was shot down. Now i can quite remember if in what order the next events happened all i know is that I pulled out of the fighting to dive back in and had a good deflection shot that ripped of the left ailion, I zoomed back up and did a quick turn and came back down on him, got a good hit and suddenly he just whent in a steady dive towords the water, then i saw a parachute and could confirm my first kill in my first mission. While dogfighting i saw stig having trouble with a spitfire on his 6, as i were turning towards him i suddely saw him catch fire. I dove on the spitfire and allmost got into a turnfight with int in thirst for revange.

After som more dogfighting i got a good angle on the last spitfire and shot his left ailion off, unfortunetly he somehow mangede to get on my six. I treid to do siccors while Boyezee was attacking him, he made him go off but he quicly got behind me again, i tried to do the same move but took a hit to my engine just before Boyezee got him off. This forced me to head back for France leaving Boyezee with the dameged spit.

Halfway to France me engine cut out and i had to jump, my parachute opened and landed safely in the water where i was rescued, and Went back to celebrate my victory, Boyezee seemed to just disappear from the face of the earth.

We've been moved from our home field of Marquise-Ost in the Pas de Calais to Theville on the Cherbourg peninsula. It's not a bad field or town, but there's definitely less trouble to get in here. We're definitely a long way from Chez Plaisir and my lovely ladies Isabelle and Genvieve. They're probably recovering from the night before right about now...er, best not think about that. On the advice of some of the local farm boys, I and most of 4 Staffel didn't spend the night at the brothel last night. Staffelkapitain Reinhart was not so wise. We warned him and tried to pry him away but he threatened us with latrine duty and so we left him to his doom. He took quite a fancy to a heavily perspiring, blemish-covered, whale of a French, er...woman? The jury is still out on that one. I can't be sure but I think her caught her name...Monique. For a laugh the Staffel has started a humanitarian fund. 'Save Monique - one of the last French whales.' When I told Herr Staffelkapitain this morning he was not amused. The blackmen said they saw him stumble into his tent early this morning as they were arming and pre-flighting our birds. They said he was pale as a ghost and speaking as if he were delirious. Can't blame him, I'd want to be delirious if I were him too.

The Tigers of the 4th left our Staffelkapitain to recuperate while we headed off to the mess and briefing with Gruppenkommandeur Pitti. It was short and sweet. We were to escort a large raid of JU-88's and HE-111's to their target in Portland. 5th Staffel was to be on the left, 6th on top, 4th on the right. All ~1000m above the bombers. Groans went out as the Heinkels were mentioned. They're slow as can be and require us to zig zag or fly with flaps down. No one wants to fly with their flaps down in a combat zone and we unanimously decide to zig zag.

I go through pre-flight even though the ground crew has already done it for me. I'll not go down to a trivial error if I can help it. "Clear prop!" I hit the ignition and my Daimler-Benz barks to life. 4th Staffel takes off last. Casca and I are last to take off. His first crate had it's rudder cables cut. No doubt the work of the Resistance. Damn French. Don't they know they've been beaten for months now? Finally we get airborne and head to the rendevous just north of the peninsula. Soon we spot the bombers and II Gruppe takes up escort positions for the long journey across the Kanal.

As we approach the English Coast, I have a sickening feeling. I look back to my 4 o'clock and see Casca. Just above him, partially obscured by sunlight I see something else. "Indians 5 o'clock high and contrailing" I call over the radio. "They're wheeling in behind us." The Staffel went to combat power and Casca and I wheeled around in a right hand turn to come in on their six, climbing while we turned. Our E-1's struggled to climb at that altitude but soon we were above them. As we completed the turn it was obvious Hurricanes were all over the bombers and we half-rolled and dove on Tommy. Upwards of 600km/h, we barreled down on them. I picked out a Hurricane latched on to an 88. I opened fire early in an attempt to let the bomber go but he would have none of it. I closed the distance to 100m before I broke off. I watched my rounds creep along his right wing until they hit his fuselage and suddenly he was streaming glycol. He peeled off to the left and descended quickly. I do not claim him. Content that he wasn't coming back, I climbed back to the right. Casca was still with me even though his radio had died on him minutes earlier.

But this is where things went nuts. There were planes everywhere. Twice I had Spitfires fly over me, too target fixated and bloodthirsty to notice anything other than their gunsight. I took long range shots on several to get them off fellow 109's. I chased one Hurricane far lower than I wanted but he simply would not let go of a yellow wing-tipped 109. I landed a few rounds but nothing serious and they kept descending. I broke off at 1.5km after I lost them in a spiraling split-S. I climbed to the south and then to the west. Checking my six the whole time. At 4k I leveled off. I noticed something to my 8 o'clock low. It was a Junkers! I followed the flight path he was on back to England and ran into half a dozen more coming from the target. I took up a perched escort position and throttled back. I looked back at the last one in line and noticed something.

Spitfire! I rammed the throttle forward and dove on Tommy. He was shooting up a stricken bomber leaking oil and not firing back. We went head on but I couldn't get a shot off. I pulled up expecting a dogfight as I came around for another pass but soon I realized he was still on the bomber. Either he hadn't noticed me, or he was so bloodthirsty he just didn't care. I dove immediately to close the gap and come up underneath him in his blind spot. Sure enough he kept on the bomber. At 180m, just inside my convergence of 200m, I opened fire. Instantly thick black smoke and glycol came back onto my windscreen. I pulled off to his 4 o'clock and watched as he peeled left and made for the IoW on the deck. Because of the fire and streaming I claim him. He may have made the IoW but certainly not Tangmere. We were too far out in the Kanal at his altitude.

Just then Scannon and Casca came over the radio. We decided to meet at 4k on the southernmost point of the IoW. We all arrived around the same time. Scannon was 500m above me and Casca said he was rolling in on my six. I told him, "I'm clear, no six." He came back, "So you're not rocking your wings?" "Sheisse, it's a Hurricane!" My stomach tightens as I think about what must have gone through that Tommy's head when he realized what was happening. Once more I dove into the fray. Scannon remained high to provide top cover. As deep as we were in Indian Country, we decided slashing attacks alone would not finish him quickly enough. We were all close to bingo fuel and I was out of my wing-mounted MG's. I told Casca to make slashing attacks while I held him in a constant turn. Flying in subtle yo-yo's he kept in a constant left turn getting lower and lower all the time. Soon we were 500m then 200m, finally we were meters off the ground and flying on a knife's edge. At the bottom of my yo-yo's all the way down I had been landing hits but nothing critical. I think the cumulative effect finally created enough drag that he stalled first at low speed. He went in upside down. "Poor bastard" I thought. I hope he made it out of the plane.

As we turned south Scannon called out two Indians overhead, no doubt coming to their friend's call, only too late. "Sheisse! Full throttle due south!" We raced across the wave tops until we were 15 or 20 km south of the IoW. When we were sure we were clear, we throttled back began a gradual climb to 2km. 15 minutes later we were over Theville and entering the pattern. We all made good landings. When I climbed from my 109, I soon realized very few others had made it back. It was a hard day for the Tigers of the 4th. Many good pilots didn't make it back.

War is Hell.

First personal sortie.

While doing BnZ attacks on tommies that attacked our bombers some hits on a Hurricane. Status of this enemy plane unknown.
After disturbing engaging bandits i savely returned back to the airfield where i fliped the plane on landing.

I had been telling Hitler for over a year, since my first flight in an Me-262, that only Focke Wulf Fw-190 fighter production should continue in conventional aircraft, to discontinue the Me-109, which was outdated, and to focus on building a massive jet-fighter force. - Galland

After being informed that our leader had crabs and could not make the flight due to emergency genital fumigation, we soldiered on into the the skies. A few minutes off the coast of England, I lost my wingmate in a turn and ended up following the wrong 109. Once our engagement began, I was pilot killed by Luke.

Today we stretched the legs of our Emils as well went deep with the bombers, crossing the widest point of the Kanal. Taking off in good order, we formed up, while climbing to our assigned altitude to meet and escort the bombers from the coast of France to the Isle of Wight. Lee had radio issues, and asked me to be the flight communicator with the staffellfuhrer. Always glad to be of help! Our passage was initially uneventful as we ran rings around the bombers, shepherding them towards their mission destiny. But one moment's inattention and I lost contact with Lee, just as bandits were called, and we were mixing in with another flight. I'd asked Lee to waggle his wings, which did not have the desired result. No eyes on my rottefuhrer! I'd lost him. Now the fight was on, and I followed a diving Emil in hope of covering someone. Lee kept asking me for a 20 update, but I was being drawn into a fight with Spits as the Emil I followed became lost in the furball. I turned and chased one bandit which turned out to be a Hurricane. I got good hits on it, and I last saw it diving away venting. But I was not alone. Tracers past my cockpit told me all I need to know. So the dance was on; spiral-climbs, Near-stall turns at the top, snap shots, and a desire to extricate myself from the swarming "bawstards!" No good. Some days you get the bear. Some days the bear gets you. in this case, I'd run out of altitude, and could not gain separation. I began taking hits; venting. But still I maneuvered against them, taking snap shots even as my own plane took snap shots. i think I gave ALMOST as good as I got. I felt relaxed, like a man accepting of his fate. So I lost nothing in being devious, and clever and as aggravating as I could be to those Spits...even as my plane with disgorging oil over my wind screen and the engine began it's death throes. Time to get out, and all was quiet. I knew I was in deep peril of becoming a prisoner. I closed my eyes before splashing down, and hoped I would be rescued. I was sure of it.. But for extra measure, I clicked my soggy heels and proclaimed "there's no place like home". But how to atone for having lost sight of my rottefuhrer? As I float here in the murky waters awaiting a daring rescue (you guys coming?) I had no words to explain my failure. None were needed. Facts speak for themselves.
I claim the Hurricane only as a probable.

Flew as part of the 1st Schwarm led by Atreides with Stig and our new recruit Keroth, we climbed to meet the bombers before taking position on their left flank.

As we approached the Isle of Wight we got a call that enemy aircraft had been spotted high at over 6.5k, we climbed in a wide turn to pick up altitude before engaging the enemy however as we climbed to 6k we were bounced by 2 Spitfires, taking evasive action we dropped to 3k before more RAF fighters joined in.

After dancing for a while with the enemy we managed to separate 2 Spitfires but before we could make use of our numerical advantage Atreides was killed, followed shortly after by Stig who was last spotted going down in flames.

Keroth and I fought the 2 Spitfires, Keroth landed good hits on one of the enemy aircraft which dived steeply before a little parachute appeared from the cockpit, our new Gefreiter had scored on his first sortie, Horrido!

Keroth was then able to score good hits on the second Spitfire, ripping his left aileron off, however the Spitfire was able to turn behind him, I dived down to clear his tail, the Spitfire broke off and turned away from the fight, I climbed then dived again for my enemy, I had the energy and the position to finally finish him off, I dived to his six and prepared my shot, took aim...
