Another mission from the Theville airfield. But this mission was a bit different from the last ones since we hadn't to meet up with the bombers (Ju 88 from II./KG51) over France but near the English coast. The plan was to assemble my whole Gruppe ovr our airfield and then fly out towards Wilmington to meet up with the bombers which went there from Le Havre. The bombers target was Portsmouth so the were about to turn west from Wilmington on and fly along side the coast.
At 1215 I took of with the 6th Staffel. The 4th and 5th had some problems on take off whcich cost us a lot of time. Finally at 1236 the whole Gruppe left the France coast.
As we came closer to the English coast we searched for the 40 Ju 88s but couldn't find them apart from two or 3 damaged bombers running back home alone.
The RAF must already have knocked them down. What a fatal day for our mighty Luftwaffe!
Since it became clear that there are no bombers around any more I gave orders to my do a Freie Jagd in the area between the Isle of Wight, Selsey and Portsmouth. Soon I spotted a single Spitfire passing in front of me. It seemed that he hasn't spotted us and thus I gave him a wake up call with my guns which made him dive away. I looked around and spotted about 10 enemies in the surrounding, Spitfires and Hurricanes. So we went down into the attack.
After my first attack on one of the Spitfires I looked behind me and spotted two Hurricanes closing in and opening fire on me. My 109 got hit. Fuel was streaming out and my left cannon was damaged. I dived out of the action and headed back to France. This happened at 1302.
I reached our airfield with the last drops of fuel and landed safely at 1318.
