After a last minute change of plans, 3rd schwarm joined in with the rest of 5./26 to provide cover for 6./ZG76 as it savaged Manston. Bubi had to RTB early on with a bad engine, but kudos to him for a safe dead-stick landing, and running to a spare plane, and rejoining the fight! As is typical, once the fight was on chaos ruled the day. During this fight I never got a shot off. I was separated from my wingman Krass, but Bubi arrived on scene and found me and we teamed up and tried to locate Krass who was in a fight to the death somewhere near East-Church. We never found him. We received and acknowledged the recall to RTB,so Bubi and I headed back. Our route took us directly towards Manston so I decided we'd drop in for tea. Three smoking planes later we found ourselves up to our necks in Spits. My fault, as or plan was to strike fast on one pass and keep on going. I misinterpreted Bubi's initial call of aircraft to the left; he meant the airfield and I thought he was calling bandits, and naturally broke in that direction. This misstep placed me right in the midst of an cauldron filled of angry Spits. Bubi wanted to turn back and help, and disregarded my warning not to. He was soon in the same stew-pot as I. Boyezee, upon hearing of our dilemma was inclined to turn about to assist us, but I asked him not to bother. Our fate seemed sealed, and I was already streaming coolant, and badly holed and too low and slow (and surrounded) for salvation. He could not have gotten to us in time to help. I tried to get my crate to climb high enough for a safe bailout, but it did not have it in it to do so. Reluctantly I jumped, as the controls were shot away, and I had no further control options. I write this report from the bottom of Manston bay. Enough RAF relics here to start a museum!

Well, FLYBY pretty much nails it, so no need to chew it a second time. What was noteworthy was after 5 plus minutes of hearing our wingmate KRASS getting a kill and our inability to help him in time was pretty damn frustrating. So, going home with a full ammo belt and flying over downtown TommyVille was just like waving a red flag in front of a steaming bull. FLY and I did what any red blooded fighter pilot would do...

I took off with the first schwarm, consisting of myself, Reinhart, Martin and Villiers. We headed to the rendezvous point over Calais. At around 1527 we spotted the bombers and headed toward England. After about 10 minutes or so of flying and seeing quite a few friendly contacts, we found the RAF. Reinhart gave the order to engage, and we rolled down into them. Reinhart got a confirmed kill with Martin watching over his shoulder. I dropped down onto a Hurricane who was giving our Do-17s hell. I took a few shots at him, but unfortunately missed. I'm not sure if it was his wingman or not, but finally I took a few hits myself. The pilot was injured, so I dove for the ground and finally started back toward France. The aircraft seemed to be in great shape on the way back for having taken a few bullets. I brought it back to Marquise East, and took it in for a landing at 1620.

Early one morning I sat in my little office next to the dispersal figuring out some tactics with the mighty beast, Archie had joined me when suddenly there was a knock on the door.
Before I had the chance to answer it, the tall impressive man who had knocked was already facing me. ‘lo, so you’re the skipper of this unit, I’m going to be flying with you from now on, I took the liberty of looking around and I saw the bird I want, Got the mechanics to work and I’m ready to take off in half an hour. If you need me you’ll know where to find me, right? I must admit it was the first time in my career that I was nailed to the ground, I’d recognized this man from one of the ‘Adler’ editions, His face was covered with scars, hands were burned almost to the bone, in the corner of his mouth he had a pipe. This pilot was the former wingman of Galland, saw action over Spain, Poland, Norway, Belgium, France and now Britain. He was older than the rest of us, think somewhere around his mid-30’s. This pilot had seen death itself so many times that they became friends, so what more could I say but just hello, welcome Katt.

I’d made up a plan with 5./26 they were supposed to create a diversion so we could take care of Manston. This plan was not known to Hermann or the gruppenkommandeur of either 26 or 76. So this just had to work!

An hour later most of us were back up in the air.

The coast of England. The initial point. No time left for thinking, 5 staffel were already taking care of those hurries as again Tommie saw us as easy prey! This was going well!

there lay England, the lion's den. But the eagles were going to attack the lion in his lair and wound him grievously. Manston: Rakatakatak Blenheim and a Hurricane up in flames!

Time to get out, they would be coming for us soon now. We’d tried to regroup, but the rest of our staffel who were covering our backs were involved with some very angry British fighters!

We climbed back up but couldn’t find them, I was running low on fuel so we had to get back.

As we were ready to leave the lion’s den, Otto in the back called out calmly: two fighters to port above!, As I glanced backed I could already smell them, I even saw the markings on one of those planes: SH-V! Nooo damn it! Spitfires. Biggles! Dive, dive, dive!!! the fighters were beginning to be a real nuisance. How are you doing Biggles? I’d asked. I’m OK for now sir but I’m starting to sweat! Never mind that, that’s just weakness leaving your body! Our twin engines were running red.

The sun shone into our cabin. The enemy fighters had been got rid of. Below us lay the wide sea. How beautiful the Earth can be. Hands loosened their grip on the machine guns. What happened just a few minutes ago lay behind us and we relaxed. The engines were running evenly, we were flying home. The aircraft on the airfield didn't exist anymore; that was the result.

Took off from Marquise West leading schwarm 2 with Javelina and Zysk. Zysk had computer problems and couldn’t get up. We were very late getting off due to all of the computer and aircraft issues and got separated from Schwarm 1 who took off first. We took of dead last. Because we were so late we proceeded directly to England and Eastchurch hoping to catch up. In this process Javelina and I unknowing got ahead of the bombers and we set up an orbit near Eastchurch. While I was looking for the bombers we got jumped by two Hurricanes and Javelina warned me in time to dive away but he took hits in his radiator….THANKS JAVELINA! Javelina turned back into the channel and later ditched. I ultimately found the bombers and ended up in a diving spiraling fight with a Hurricane and got some good hits. Exited the French coast between Manston and Hawkinge and landed back at Hydrequent in good shape.

Well it was a great sortie this time round we used our heads and we so desperately wanted to stay alive. the last mission was a blessing in the end we are all improving with time that being said,

We took off from Oye Plage and formed up very quickly and effectively we told the 5th that we are going out and we made our way to tear up Mansten Biggles lead by Grey got to kills a Hurricane and a Blenheim we then reformed at height and split into two groups me Archie and Katt saw the bombers in the area of Eastchurch and we tried to help them out but they got cut to bits. Fuel was getting critical so we all made our way back and all RTB. All 110s got back safley.

we will have to take 110% next time and ill teach you guys how to use the fuel pumps.

Launched with my comrades and flew as top cover while two of the Staffel strafed Manston - my rear gunner engaged a Spitti with no observed results and I returned to France - unfortunately not the correct aerodrome - will indulge in map reading during our rest period.

I woke up from one of my terrible nightmares again. The capture which I suffered two missions ago was giving me flashbacks and memories to when the allies captured me and threw me in prison feeding me mash potatoes and stew. Eugh them days are long gone, I wasn't cleared fit for last mission going to Manston however I anxiously waited the return of my squad mates. They rolled in and some didn't come back from Manston. I remember the grief and the memories I had with them as the thought of never seeing them again set in.

The date of 15th of August 1940 was a straight forward mission. Meet with the bombers over Calais approx 3500m and head to Canterbury were the bombers will split into two groups. The first would go to East Church and the other groups to Rochester. Our Staffelcapitan herr Reinhart told us we will be escorting the group which was heading for east church along with a couple of schwarms of 5th staffel and their pilots. I was placed into schwarm 1 as we walked into the mission briefing room and shortly after that I headed out of the room to the lovely smell and sound of Marquise east. Finally being able to fly again made me feel ecstatic with excitement and also shaking with nerves. However after a quick glass of Schnapps I was ready to fly. I walked along the side of my White 5 inspecting the paintwork and the condition of her. The aircrew Hoffler and Stimmt engaged into friendly conversation as I clambered onto the wing and stepped over into the cockpit. "ahh finally I am back!" I felt right at home as I saw Hoffler wind up the belt. "contact" as the DB engine spurred into life. I looked over at my Staffelcapitan and he flagged the signal to taxi to the runway. We also had Obermann and Martinjas our other dear pilots to fill the rest of the schwarm. I filled in at slot 3 on the runway. Reinhart started his engine and started rolling then Martinjas and then me and then Obermann. Gentle throttle up and then shocking it into full power showing 5th and 6th how its done. We are always good at that at the pub showing how much more beer we can take and on taking off as the first staffel in the air. I waved to some of the 5th as I go by. Thinking to myself "I will see you up in the sky boys good luck, good hunting." I heard about a pilot in the 5th staffel. He is a no nonsense pilot which was cleared not fit for the mission due to an unhealthy infection. His name is Lee, a great pilot at that and we all hope he recovers soon for operations. Those 5th are a bunch of hard bastards.

Our schwarm was in a loose formation climbing to Calais we reached 5500m and circled around waiting for the slow bombers. After 10 minutes of circling we finally spot them in tight formation heading off Calais coast. We keep our attitude and Zig Zag behind the bombers finally reaching the Canterbury airfield there were to many aircraft in the sky to count. Martinjas called out a perfect Vic formation diving however, it turned out to be 109's we then regained our altitude and zig zagged again and I called out another vic formation above us about 500m or so. Reinhart called them out as hurricanes and we engaged. They dived out at the bombers and Reinhart got a lucky shot on one of them and it looked like it hit his engine. Martinjas confirmed the kill as it plummeted to the ground after I tried as hard as I could to stick on my wingmen and help them out. However, we got separated and it went into a free for all. I pulled up into a left hand bank conserving my energy as I pulled back round to the bombers six, I saw a cheeky hurricane move into the back he clearly didn't have view around his six or any team members around. I turn my stick I had the obvious energy advantage I pushed the cannon button way too early and saw a part of his rounded wing snap off, nothing serious though. I broke quickly and pulled up in a climb and turned around to scout for more enemies. Again more hurricanes diving into the fray after the dorniers one silly pilot made the mistake of going infront of the bomber and I saw him get bullet holes in the engine and many in the glass I think I may have even seen blood. Another target I picked out diving for the bombers I made sure that I wouldn't press it too early this time. I zoomed behind his blind spot and knew this would be the one i pressed the cannon and machine-guns simultaneously. The image next I saw would be one to haunt me. Flaps and rudder controls flying off his plane, rupturing his radiator and seeing him lifelessly pull away. "I got one I got one" No one was there to confirm the kill which I had just commited too. Thaine here: If you want to claim it as a victory put it please in a table or plainly visible. This was disappointing as I couldn't be put on the wall of victories with many of my fellow axis pilots.

Moving away from the kill I picked up a hurricane or spitfire on my six and he had a few shots and hit nothing serious. As the bombers made their attack run on East Church many of the hurricanes started to flush out and head to rochester for the other group so hopefully they did okay. I started to circle around East Church at 3000m and then I heard that Martinjas had engine problems and had to RTB due to flak. Reinhart also was also RTB and he called out the order to head back. I linked up with some of the 5th staffel pilots on the way back we were flying in straight formation until I felt the need to show off with a little wing waggle and some inverted flying to celebrate. One of 5th's schwarms got bounced by some spitfires on the way back over Manston I had enough cannons and fuel so I chose to head there however i saw nothing. I hope their schwarm was okay. Flying across the lovely blue channel heading back to the dear Marquise East which I have missed. I followed in with 5th staffel to land however, I had too much speed and had too abort the first landing and made it on the second time round with a bit of a clipped prop. I parked up and had Stimmt waiting for me "Hoffler's gone to the wine house already, he said he'd meet you there." I replied with "ahh, that man and his wine and beer. You coming along tonight Stimmt? I have a lot to tell you about and it will be messy." I waved at the 5th staffel guys which I flew back with "Very good flying from the 5th there! Shame you aren't as good at taking off!" I get a middle finger as a reply..

Today was a good day I think to myself walking off to the pub with the blue sky above. Nothing is better than flying with my dear 4th staffel.

Well, basically the 5th saved the 110's near Manston but because of that we lost the bombers near Eastchurch. Even a plane as magnificent as the 109 can only be at one place at a time.

Made a short video compilation of my sortie (link below for if you enjoy a good laugh). Definitely have flown better missions :)

We took top cover for the 110's as they attacked Manston before attempting to link with the Do-17's attacking Eastchurch - whilst we circled Manston Hurricane's were spotted and chased away.

We re-formed as a Staffel before heading West to link up with the main bomber force however we were too late and arrived as they were under attack, we dove to clear them and scrapped with the enemy fighters however no victories were claimed - the bombers had taken a beating and only 2 were witnessed to fly clear of Eastchurch however I lost visual with them after this, we circled for a while to mop up any RAF fighters but after no more were spotted I gave the call to RTB - on the way home we lost 2 aircraft to Spitfire's.
