Krass & Stig flew with me in the 1st Schwarm with Flyby leading the 2nd, after forming up at Boulogne with the bombers we were instructed to take top cover, the 2 Schwarms lost contact in this climb - as we patrolled high above the bomber's we investigated a number of contacts north of our position which turned out to be the 6th Staffel.

After continued patrolling we encountered Spitfire's at our altitude, after a non conclusive climbing fight we disengaged to find the bombers as they approached target - Stig reported engine issues and attempted to RTB and Flyby reported that both he and Lee had been lost. Krass & I found the bombers and continued our escort, Hurricane's were then spotted not far from the bombers, we engaged and danced for a while before again disengaging and attempting to reform with the He-111's, at this point I asked Bubi & DUB of the 2nd Schwarm to patrol the coast to assist us in our extraction from enemy airspace however I reported the incorrect path of the bombers, after noticing the error I asked them to RTB.

As the bombers moved to the south coast we had minor scuffles with more RAF fighters before clearing England with no shots fired.

Krass & myself landed back in Hydrequent - 3 aircraft lost in the 5th - 4 made it back to base.

Marquise East: 5 Staffel Mess, 21:45 hrs:

Reading my letter from home for the millionth time today, I notice the burly frame of Feldwebel Helga approaching.
"Krass.. get your crap together and report to the Staffelkapitän immediatly . Oh, and bring a mug."
I enter the Oberleutnant's lair with a little trepidation, but seeing veteren pilot Hauptgefreiter Stig with a mug of schnapps eases my worries. After a few drinks to relax, our great leader reminisced of his early years.
"Not sure if you chaps are aware, but those toffs in their Spits up there are prolly old chums of mine from Oxford. When I was a young chap, daddy sent me to England to learn the Classics. Homer is my inspiration, pity he drank too much, turned him yellow in the end. Anyway Krass, needs must so you will be joining Stig as my Katchmarek. These RAF chums like to get in nice and cosy on one's rear for a painful pants down thrashing. Your job is to keep my back doors clear from their fiendish probing."
I smile and pretend to know what the heck our glorious Staffelkapitän is talking about, salute, and quickly make my leave.

Hydrequent Airfield: 16th August 1940:

Today, we are to escort our brave bombers deep into the enemy's homeland. Our E4's are primed and ready for the dangerous mission ahead, our deadly Jagdgeschwader purring on Hydrequent field. Lined up behind Oberleutnant Boyezee with Stig on my left, 1st schwarm thunder down the grassy strip and into the summer sky.

Soon, we are over England. Our messerschmitt's are high now, contrailing in the thin cold air while we scan the skies for possible contacts. Below us, the bombers make thier slow but sure progress to the target area. Moving deeper into England, we see our first RAF planes at equal height. Spitfires, and at equal altitude. With no advantage, we try to spiral climb but our engines are starved at this height and we need to keep in contact with our bombers. Unfortunately, Stig reports engine problems and needs to RTB. We wish him luck as we enter a steep dive to lose the tommies and cover the bombers below us.

Not far below, we spot two Hurricanes on the prowl. They notice us and begin a climb to get on our six. I follow the Oberleutnant through a series of dives and climbs as we try to gain an advantage over the tommie planes. But these are no novice pilots and no advantage is gained. Remaining patient, we extend away. We spot numerous contacts on our way to the bombers and soon a hurricane is closing on my six, I break and lose the wooden pest and while trying to reform, end up in a tussle with a Spit. Bleeding energy too quickly in the fight, I steeply dive away and reform with the Staffelkapitan and the bombers heading for France.

My fuel is now almost on empty as we approach our base at Hydrequent. Luckily the fumes are enough to feed my thirsty DB601 and we touch down with good landings. It was a gruelling mission today, but with patience and the good pilot skills of Oberleutnant Boyezee, we made it back with the surviving bombers in one piece. A small victory in a long war.
