The upgrades come with planes in the packages on Steam, I think.

Even if they don't, I find that they're not really necessary to play the game. You can get by without them.

Most of the planes on steam come with upgrades, but there's an "Ace" pack which has all the ones not there, including the cosmetic stuff like scarves and streamers, and the daft stuff like pistols for your pilot. Most of the "upgrades" are really just things like fancy gun-sights and instrument gauges, which as mad as it sounds you don't really need. You can tell how fast you're going by how loud the wind rushing past you is, lol.

Obligatory bump to mention that it's on sale again. All the modules are 60% off on steam, and you can get the Channel Battles edition for £12. They've also released a new patch recently which adds a couple of Russian planes to the game, as well as a bunch of flight model tweaks, although I don't know what those are yet.
